Suryakumar Yadav dissects the cricket pitch like a mathematician : S Sreesanth

Mumbai Indians became the first team in the history of TATA IPL to successfully chase down 200-plus targets in consecutive games. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated Rajasthan Royals at home by chasing down 213 and made the run chase of 215 against Punjab Kings in Mohali look ridiculously easy.

Riding upon blistering half-centuries from their Indian batting mainstays, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav, the five-time champions crushed Punjab Kings. MI sent a warning of danger to the opposition teams i.e. take us lightly at your own peril.

Star MI batter Suryakumar Yadav continued doing Surya things against Punjab Kings and entertained the audience with his 360-degree hittings.

Hailing the No. 1 T20I batter in the world, former India cricketer S Sreesanth termed SKY as a mathematician for his ability to find gaps.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Sreesanth said, “SKY isn’t just a batter, he’s a mathematician. The way he carries himself is simply superb. He dissects the field like a mathematician uses a compass and a protractor on the paper. He makes those calculations brilliantly inside his sharp mind and makes full use of the dimension of the ground, the pace of the bowler, etc. He literally knows exactly where the fielder is and where the gaps are. He’s so precise. They say ‘sky is the limit’ but for Surya, even SKY is not the limit.”

Sreesanth further added that MI have come back on the winning track and it will be difficult to stop their juggernaut from rolling in TATA IPL 2023.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Sreesanth said, “Once Mumbai Indians taste victory, there’s no stopping them. They have a long history of success. They’ve done it in the past and can repeat it.”

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody also praised Mumbai Indians for back-to-back successful run chases in TATA IPL 2023 and the fearless approach they devised. Moody asserted Ishan Kishan finding his form back is a good sign for MI.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Live, Moody said, “Mumbai Indians have a very strong batting line-up, that is their strength. They are a fearless side in a run chase and they are proving it. The only missing piece in their batting was Ishan Kishan and his coming to form is a massive boost for MI.”

Third edition of ‘Taif of Roses’ festival celebrates the cultural significance of roses

6th May 2023, Riyadh – Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Culture, together with Taif Governorate Municipality, has launched the third edition of the ‘Taif of Roses’ festival, supported by the Quality of Life Program. The festival is taking place in the city of Taif from 21st April to 5th May 2023 and will celebrate the significance of the rose, a plant that has been at the centre of the region’s culture and economy for centuries.

Taif is known locally as the ‘rose city’ and from March to May each year, during the bloom season, the area is overtaken by the intense, exotic scent of roses. More than 10,000 rose heads are required to make just a small vial of Taif rose essential oil, which makes the oil obtained from Taif roses some of the most precious and high value in the world. The oil can be used in skincare products and moisturizers, as well as exported to high-end fashion houses to be used in perfumes. The rose can also be infused to make sweet meats.

In 2022, the second edition of the Taif of Roses festival broke the Guinness World Records with the world’s largest flower basket. The basket was over a metre tall, over 12 metres long and nearly eight metres wide, beating the world record previously held by Singapore.

This year’s festival will create a holistic visitor experience, beginning at Taif International Airport. The airport will be decorated with roses and there will be a parade with performers and vehicles adorned with flowers. The centre of the festivities will take place at Al-Ruddaf Park, featuring a ‘Rose Mountain’ as well as mesmerizing light displays and a rose market selling local products made from Taif roses. There will also be a series of musical, theatrical, and artistic performances, including the Rose Hymns Exhibition.

The Taif of Roses festival is a unique platform to connect local producers and farmers with international companies and brands, enabling connections and opportunities for businesses and allowing the Taif rose to reach broader markets.

The festival is an enjoyable annual opportunity to celebrate Taif’s cultural heritage, honouring the status of the Taif rose at the core of the local culture.

UPL and Republic of Guyana Join Hands to establish a ‘Millets Model Farm’ in Guyana

UPL and Republic of Guyana Join Hands

UPL, a leading provider of Sustainable Agriculture Solutions, announced a collaboration with the Republic of Guyana to establish a 200 acre ‘Millets Model Farm’. Mr. Jai Shroff, Group CEO of UPL group and Mr. Zulfikar Mustafa, Hon. Agriculture Minister of the Republic of Guyana, signed an MOU on 21st April, 2023 in Georgetown, Guyana with an aim to assess the adaptation of various millet varieties for growing and consuming in Guyana. The signing of the MoU coincided with the visit of an Indian delegation to Guyana led by Mr. S. Jaishankar, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs of India.

In this partnership, UPL will supply technical expertise and selected agriculture inputs, while the Republic of Guyana will provide suitable land parcel of 200 acres in Guyana, local farm operation will be done by Republic of Guyana.

Millets, also known as super food, are climate smart, sustainable, rich in heritage, and highly nutritious food resource. In comparison with rice, millet production requires half of the water per acre as compared with rice, making it a water conservation crop that can also withstand other climatic conditions like droughts, floods, heat stress, erratic rainfalls, etc., than other crops, saving food loss, enhancing small farmers resilience.

According to the FAO, millets encompass a diverse group of cereals including pearl, proso, foxtail, barnyard, little, kodo, browntop, finger and Guinea millets, as well as fonio, sorghum (or great millet) and teff. They are an important source of nourishment for millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. They are deeply rooted in Indigenous Peoples’ culture and traditions and help guarantee food security in areas where they are culturally relevant. Millets are also very nutritious because they consist of antioxidants, minerals, and protein. As whole grains, each millet variety contains a particular type and amount of fibre, which aids in the regulation of intestinal function, blood sugar, and lipids.

Mr. Sagar Kaushik, President, Global Corporate & Industry Affairs from UPL, said, “We are delighted to partner with the Republic of Guyana as the first country in Latin America to explore millet cultivation potential in Guyana, which will also benefit Small Holding Farmers.”

Explaining the initiatives further, Mr. Kaushik Said, said, “UPL is paving the path for millet cultivation and making important strides toward its vision of a food-secure world through this collaboration. This is a win-win situation for both Guyana and UPL. UPL’s expertise and technical know-how will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of this initiative, which can provide a sustainable livelihood to smallholding farmers globally. We are excited about the potential of this collaboration and look forward to working with the Republic of Guyana to achieve our shared goal of promoting sustainable agriculture practices.”

FLAME University’s HR symposium initiates a futuristic dialogue entailing the traits and characteristics required by Gen Z

India, Pune: Gen Z are ambitious and looking for a meaningful work experience in a flexible work environment that prioritizes growth and well-being. According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Confidence report, around 80% of Gen Z workers globally are looking to find a job that aligns better with their values. To help Gen Z workers, the leaders of the future can raise retention rates by addressing mental health and job stress and providing meaningful career development opportunities by creating a supportive, value-led working environment to enable Gen Z to learn and grow. In retrospect, Gen Z should value the contributions of their peers and seniors and align their work goals with the organization’s work ethics and value systems.

As businesses experience a significant shift in the profile of their employees, with unique personality traits, values, and motivations, it has become necessary for organizations to re-evaluate their talent development and engagement processes to effectively utilize and retain these new-age workers. FLAME University’s HR symposium featured expert speakers in human resources who shared insights on competencies required for Gen Z employees to thrive and for organizations to adopt best practices for effectively working with them. Keynote speakers Ms. Priya Kandoth, Head of People and Culture at Bridgestone India, and Mr. Amit V. Chuttar, a partner at Red Beryl Advisors LLP, presented their industry perspectives and emphasized the importance of setting realistic expectations.

Ms. Kandoth stated, “The industry is not looking for individual expressions but values, collaboration, and cooperation. The new generations are far more into strategy meetings than required. My advice to them is to first understand the basics of the shop floor, dirty their hands, understand all possible aspects of the business, and then acquire the knowledge and insights for strategy meetings. Strategy and vision are more than mere PowerPoint presentations. They are about competing effectively and planning for the future. It requires that Gen Z first find its feet and engage as a foot soldier to meaningfully contribute towards the larger goal of the organization.”

Mr. Chuttar shared his thoughts on Gen Z and emphasized the importance of focusing on their duties as much as their rights in every context of their lives. He added, “India is going to script its own success story over the next 25 years, with Gen Z at the forefront. I urge Gen Z to align themselves with the organization’s vision, collaborate with peers, seniors, and leaders, and develop a mindset of learning. This is possible if Gen Z understands the legacy and history of the organization, which is crucial for defining the future path in an evolving business environment. Organizations and employees can thrive by creating a conducive work environment built on trust and in-depth understanding of the organization’s vision and goals vis-à-vis its legacy, values, and how it operates with various products and services.”

FLAME University’s interactive HR symposium is an example of the university’s commitment to providing a well-rounded education that prepares its students for successful careers by exposing them to the latest trends and best practices in the field. The university is ensuring that its students are well-equipped to succeed in the competitive world of business management and HR.

EduFund Raises $3.5M In Pre-Series A Funding Led By MassMutual Ventures, DSP Investment Managers, and Kunal Shah

EduFund Raises

Ahmedabad, India, May 06, 2023 – EduFund, an India-based edu-fintech company, today announced that it has raised a Pre-Series A investment of $3.5M, led by global venture capital firm MassMutual Ventures (MMV). The start-up boasts of 70,000 successfully engaged parents on its platform. The round also saw participation from prominent investors DSP Investment Managers, Anchorage Capital Partners, and Kunal Shah.

Started in 2020 by founders Eela Dubey and Arindam Sengupta, the company offers a full stack solution dedicated to helping Indian parents plan, save and invest for their children’s future education. With education inflation hovering between 8-10% domestically, and over 4% in countries with high enrolment of Indian students, EduFund empowers parents to plan ahead and save across different asset classes to meet these rising costs over time. It also helps parents bridge financing needs by providing education loans and scholarships.

The app-based solution has partnered with leading Asset Management Companies (AMC) including Tata, DSP, UTI, ICICI, Aditya Birla and HDFC to offer investment products, and notable lenders such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Credila, IDFC, etc. to offer education loans. It also provides education counselling services to help prospective students understand their best-fit university.

“The demand for world class education in India is growing rapidly, and EduFund’s innovative approach to addressing the funding gap for higher education is very exciting. The founders’ asset management expertise and deep understanding of the market, coupled with the significance of education in Indian culture, makes the company a compelling investment opportunity. We are excited to partner with EduFund in their mission to make higher education accessible to all,” said Anvesh Ramineni, Managing Partner at MMV.

Co-Founders Dubey and Sengupta said: “Our goal at EduFund has always been to help parents start saving early and to provide solutions that will financially enable the aspirations they have for their children. Today, the entire education planning journey in India is very siloed. If a parent wants to save, they may visit a financial planner. If their child needs an education loan, they may approach a bank. We wanted to reduce these pain points, and bring the entire journey on to one platform so that parents can have a more seamless and centralized experience. With this new funding, we plan to accelerate our growth, create new solutions, and invest in technology.”

“Returns are a function of time (compounding). The luxury of time is available only to those investors who start early. Parents with young children have the advantage of having time on their side,” writes Managing Director and CEO of DSP Mutual Fund, Kalpen Parekh. He went on to mention that “this investment in EduFund is our way of encouraging two important objectives: real compounding and creating a corpus for our children’s education.”

Transport Corporation of India collaborates with IIM Bangalore to launch the TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab

May 06th, 2023, Bengaluru: India’s leading integrated multimodal logistics and supply chain solutions provider, Transport Corporation of India Ltd. (TCI Group), in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), today launched a new sustainability lab at the IIMB campus with a focus on supply chain management. The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab (TCI-IIMB SCSL) will be a one-of-its-kind centre of excellence in sustainable supply chain practices, dissemination and advocacy.

This new lab is a testament of IIMB’s commitment to academic excellence, research and innovation in the areas of sustainability and supply chain. It will be a vital resource for the academic community and the wider business fraternity.

The lab was inaugurated by renowned Indian cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman and Executive Director of Narayana Health and Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIMB, along with DP Agarwal, Chairman of Transport Corporation of India.

Dr. Devi Shetty pointed out that Supply Chain is an important foundation on which the development of nations depends. “Our government has made several regulatory changes addressing many hurdles in this domain. However, two issues remain – sustainability – in terms of pollution control and efficiency – in terms of digitalization, are two key areas that need to be addressed. A lab like the TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab will fill this gap and come up with brilliant solutions for these issues, while also contributing to bringing down diseases caused by pollution and reducing costs.”

DP Agarwal unveiled the logo and stated that the lab is aligned to IIMB’s ethos of sustainability in fostering excellence in management, innovation and entrepreneurship. “In a structured and professional way, the lab will help foster green practices, which will deliver positive outcomes.”

Prof. Jitamitra Desai, Chairperson and faculty of the Decision Sciences area, also the former Chairperson of the Supply Chain Management Centre at IIMB, delivered the welcome address, saying the new lab is the culmination of several interactions with the industry on sustainability and digitalization that happened over the last two years.

This was followed by an address by Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan, Director, IIM Bangalore, who spoke about the objective of setting up such a lab at the institute. “IIMB’s Supply Chain Management Centre has close interaction with the industry, which also results in various live projects for our students as well. In today’s globalized world, the impact of sustainability and digitalization on supply chains is part of business strategy. As we move into two new areas – impact of digitalization on supply chains, and bringing sustainability into all aspects of supply chains, a lab like this has special significance.”

The inauguration also saw Vineet Agarwal, Managing Director of TCI Group, launching the beta version of a GHG Measurement Tool. This tool named TEMT has a multi-lingual interface, enabling the grassroots level adoption by India’s logistics and supply chain ecosystem. It covers all modes of transportation, that is, road, rail, air and sea.

In his address, Vineet Agarwal spoke in detail about the Transportation Emission Measurement Tool. “You cannot improve unless you measure. Investors, customers, and regulators all want us to measure, monitor and mitigate emissions. As a nation and business community in India, we encountered two challenges in mitigating emissions from transportation: the lack of proper transportation emission factors and a tool to measure such emissions. There was no ready reference. This tool will address both the issues. We believe that this lab will build a community of problem solvers, by combining research with industry expertise, helping us address the challenges in a clean and green way.”

Dr. Aditya Gupta, COO, SCMC at IIMB, walked the audience through a live demo of the tool – TEMT developed by the TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab. “The tool has a dashboard that helps the user measure, monitor and mitigate emissions, and a scale. It provides reports for users. We have lots of plans for phase 2 in the development of the tool.”

Rajkiran Kanagala, Senior Vice President and Group Head, Business Strategy, TCI, discussing features and future of the tool, said: “There is transparency in the calculation of emission, and it has an API which can be part of the ERP. There is a provision for EVs too. To ensure ease of use for all logistics players in the ecosystem, the tool is multilingual.”

Sreejit Roy, Senior Partner, Computing & Green IT, IBM, busted a few myths around sustainability. “A lab like this with a tool like TEMT can go a long way in showing us how to include sustainability in design, architecture and code.”

Anand Ganapathy Chennira, Chief Strategy Officer, SUN Mobility and alumnus of IIMB, said: “India’s movement to commercial EV is starting from two- and three-wheelers. Economics is driving the green movement in this segment. A gig economy also blurs the lines between personal and commercial vehicles. Swappable batteries will not only bring down the cost of vehicles, but also aid movement to net zero. This is an exciting space, and a tool like TEMT can be very useful to this sector.”

The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Jitamitra Desai and media interaction with Prof. Rishikesha T Krishnan and Vineet Agarwal.
