IMDb Industry Report Charts 25-Year Transformation of Indian Cinema, Powered by an Ensemble of Regional Industries

MUMBAI, India—September 30, 2025—IMDb (www.imdb.com), the world’s most popular and authoritative source for information on movies, TV shows, and celebrities, today released a report, titled 25 Years of Indian Cinema (2000-2025), featuring a comprehensive analysis of the Indian film industry’s evolution over the past quarter century. This analysis is based on IMDb data from over 250 million monthly users worldwide.

The report examines the top five most popular Indian movies released each year between January 1, 2000, and August 31, 2025. These 130 movies collectively account for more than 9.1 million IMDb user ratings, an average of over 70,000 per movie, providing a unique, longitudinal view of global audience interest across languages, formats, and release models.

The Mass Movie Is Reclaiming Its Space and India’s Audience Is Seeking Stories in Which They Feel Seen

The report reveals a shift in audience preferences, with the mass movie reclaiming its space. This trend is exemplified by 12th Fail (2023), which stands out as the only movie by a Hindi filmmaker to break into the top 10 most popular Indian movies in Southern states in the last five years. This is a clear indication that, across regions, it’s the movies that resonate with a wider audience that are proving successful.

Collaborations Are Driving Scale; Directors Are Serving as the Key Architects of This New Era of Cinema

The report highlights how cross-industry collaborations are being used as a means for audience expansion. Twelve out of the 25 most popular movies from the past five years analysed in the report feature substantial cross-industry collaboration across direction, casting, music, and distribution. Directors like Lokesh Kanagaraj and S.S. Rajamouli, with four titles each in the report, are leading the charge in making movies that transcend regional boundaries.

The Star-Fan Dynamic Is Changing, So It’s Time To Stop Searching for the Next Shah Rukh Khan

The analysis also underscores an evolution in star-fan dynamics. While established stars like Shah Rukh Khan maintain significant influence, appearing in 20 of the top 130 movies across 25 years in the report, stars today are finding success through more strategic project selection and digital presence. They function more as multipliers of a film’s inherent strengths rather than guaranteed box office draws.

Language Is No Longer a Barrier, It’s a Genre

The report decodes how different language industries have developed distinct narrative identities: Telugu and Kannada films excel in spectacle-driven entertainment, Malayalam cinema in grounded realism, and Tamil films in balancing social themes with commercial appeal. This has led audiences to use language as a reliable indicator of storytelling style, choosing films based on their preferred narrative approach rather than viewing language as a barrier.

Additional findings from the report include:

  • After Shah Rukh Khan at 20, Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan are tied with 11 movies each out of the 130 analysed in the report, followed by Deepika Padukone with 10, Ajay Devgn with seven, and Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Rani Mukerji with six movies each.
  • Aamir Khan (Dangal, PK, Taare Zameen Par, and 3 Idiots) dominates the segment of ‘Crossover Hits’ of Indian cinema that have high popularity with global audiences and have journeyed far beyond the usual countries for Indian movies.
  • 3 Idiots is the most popular Indian movie worldwide on IMDb, with 468,000 IMDb user ratings, and 8.4 aggregate rating.
  • Directors Lokesh Kanagaraj, S.S. Rajamouli, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rajkumar Hirani, and Farhan Akhtar have each delivered four successful hits in the last 25 years in the report’s dataset.
  • RRR is the most popular Indian movie of all time in the U.S., whereas 3 Idiots holds that position in the UK, the rest of Europe, and Australia. IIP stand seven month high at 4 Percentage, driven by strong recovery in mining and electricity: PHDCCI

India’s Index of Industrial production grew at 4% based on year on year data (August 2025 over August 2024) driven by strong growth in the mining and electricity sector. The mining sector grew at 6% in August 2025 from a negative (7.2%) year-on-year growth in July 2025 and electricity sector which grew at 4.1% in August 2025 from 0.6% year-on-year growth in July 2025, said Mr. Hemant Jain, President, PHDCCI.

The manufacturing sector grew at 3.8%, led by positive growth in 10 out of 23 industry groups at NIC 2 digit-level in August 2025 over August 2024, with double digit growth in industry groups including manufacture of basic metals, manufacture of electrical equipment and manufacture of other transport equipment, among others, he said.

Among use-based categories, consumer durables grew at a robust at 5.2% in August 2025 from a negative year-on-year growth in July 2025. The infrastructure/capital goods recorded a double digit growth of 10.6% in August 2025, said Mr. Jain.

Use-based IIP trends show strong infrastructure and primary goods momentum but softer consumer demand. The recent GST 2.0 policy will balance investment with demand revival by catalysing consumption and broadening sustainable growth” says Secretary General and CEO, Dr. Ranjeet Mehta.

1. Mr. Shrai M. Madhvani – Chairman of the Board

Mr. Shrai Madhvani, a visionary industrialist with over 20 years of global corporate management experience, will lead the Board as its Chairman. He brings unparalleled expertise in container glass manufacturing, having successfully established new factories, expanded existing capacities, and implemented advanced technologies across multiple geographies, including India, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Shrai holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Management Science from Warwick University, UK, and an MBA in International Finance & Operations Management from Columbia University, USA.
He has been instrumental in introducing enterprise-level systems like SAP and modernizing manufacturing processes at Kakira Sugar Ltd., Uganda, one of the Madhvani Group’s flagship companies.

As a seasoned leader, Shrai serves on the boards of several Turner Group companies and oversees glass manufacturing operations of the group. His leadership is rooted in a philosophy of innovation, people development, and philanthropy, with active support for charitable and spiritual causes.

2. Mr. Kamlesh M. Madhvani – Board Member

Mr. Kamlesh Madhvani, Joint Managing Director of the Madhvani Group, is a highly respected global business leader with decades of experience across industries.
As Executive Vice President of RAMCO, the Bermuda-based family holding company, and a director of East African Holdingsand EMCO Limited, Kamlesh has been pivotal in expanding the Group’s footprint in container glass manufacturing, sugar production, steel, insurance, horticulture, and leisure sectors.

Educated at Charterhouse School (UK), he holds a B.A. (Hons) in Financial Control & Economics from Lancaster Universityand a M.Sc. (Econ) from London Business School.
He spearheaded strategic expansions in Saudi Arabia and India, including a joint venture with the Government of Gujarat for electronic components manufacturing.

Kamlesh currently focuses on managing large-scale operations in East Africa, particularly Kakira Sugar Ltd., Uganda, one of the region’s largest sugar producers.

3. Mr. Nitin Kishore Gadhia – Director

Mr. Nitin Gadhia, a qualified Chartered Accountant, brings over 45 years of experience in container glass operations and strategic leadership. Nitin also serves as trustee representative for Mr Kamlesh and Shrai Madhvani. Have been associated with group for almost 5 decades.

Nitin has been a cornerstone of the HNGIL acquisition process, serving as Authorized Representative of INSCO, and playing a critical role in legal strategy and negotiations.
He also serves as a Trustee of BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, reflecting his dedication to community service and spiritual values.

4. Mr. Kumar Krishnan – Managing Director

Mr. Kumar Krishnan, a Certified Management Accountant, will take charge as the Managing Director of HNGIL. With over 33 years of expertise in the container glass industry, Kumar is a proven leader in setting up and managing plants under challenging conditions while achieving record performance turnarounds.

Currently, he represents the Madhvani Group in Tanzania and serves as a Director of Kioo Ltd., East and Central Africa’s largest container glass manufacturer.
Kumar’s background includes successfully launching major industrial projects and managing two successful IPOs in the Indian capital markets, showcasing his depth in both operational and financial management.

5. Justice (Retd.) Mukesh R. Shah – Independent Director

Justice (Retd.) Mukesh R. Shah, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, joins as Independent Director, bringing unmatched legal expertise and governance leadership.

Justice Shah’s illustrious career includes serving as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Judge of the Gujarat High Court, and delivering 384 landmark judgments during his tenure at the Supreme court of India.

He was enrolled as an Advocate on 19th July, 1982 and practiced in the Gujarat High Court in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Taxation, Labour, Service and Company matters and specialized in Land, Constitutional, Education, Excise, Custom matters.
With over 40 years in the judiciary, Justice Shah’s inclusion underscores INSCO’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and strong corporate governance. Justice Shah served as an Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government and was on retainer as counsel for the Central Bureau of Investigation.

6. Mrs. Geetha Gangadharan – Independent Director

Mrs. Geetha Gangadharan, a highly respected legal and regulatory expert, joins as an Independent Director.

With 25 years of experience at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), she is recognized for her expertise in corporate governance, financial regulation, ESG compliance, and anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks.

She has served as Chief General Manager & Head of Enforcement at SEBI, acted as a quasi-judicial authority, and advised international regulators, including a recent assignment with the Central Bank of UAE.
Geetha’s deep understanding of regulatory interplay and market dynamics will be instrumental in strengthening HNGIL’s compliance and governance systems.

She was a special adviser to a Board Member of SEBI for 5 years.
