The Real Price of Living Abroad (Versus Staying in India)

Akash Pharande

By – Akash Pharande, Managing Director, Pharande Spaces

July 11, 2025: The recent fake news about (relatively) cheap permanent residency in the UAE has thrown up all the old questions about our fascination for leaving India and settling abroad. This phenomenon is largely a hangover, albeit a real and persistent one, from earlier decades. What does it mean to be an Indian in India today, and what does it really mean to settle down abroad? Let’s examine this.

Yes, India’s economy is by far the fastest-growing one in the world today. This year alone, the Indian job market is expected to grow by 9%; our booming manufacturing and automobile sectors will be increasing hiring by 25% and 20% just in 2025 and the IT sector, our ‘crown jewel’ industry, also forecasts a 15–20% growth in employment in 2025.

Pharande Spaces

So yes, when it comes to opportunity, India has everything that other countries have, if not much more. But let’s examine the nuts and bolts of an Indian living abroad instead.

Cost of Living – Getting the Most for Your Money

The big gap in cost between India and other countries is a very strong reasons to remain here. The cost of living in India is well over 200% lower than in the US (not including rent). Coming to housing – on an average, renting a home is 700% lower in India than in the US. And since homeownership is close to every Indian’s heart, let’s compare property prices in New York City to, say, Pune – they are over 13 times higher in NYC. The average upper-mid-range home price in Pune is approximately Rs. 8,000 per sq. ft, which converts to about USD 1,037 per sq. meter. In New York City, the median price per square meter is about USD 15,174.

This is by no means a perfect example, but it highlights the vast disparity between major US and Indian cities in terms of real estate costs.

The discrepancies are huge at every level, especially if we look at some other expense groups. In the US, restaurants cost 320% more than in India, while basic supplies cost 220% more. In India, a simple lunch at a cheap restaurant costs Rs. 250, whereas in the US it costs Rs. 1,712 when converted from USD – a difference of 623%. Even the cost of getting around is lower in India. A monthly pass for public transit is Rs. 850 in India and Rs. 5,563 in the US.

For professionals in India who make good money, this cost advantage lets them live a life that would need a lot more money to live overseas. In India, a middle-class professional may afford to hire help around the house, live in a nice place, and go out for fun on a regular basis for a lot less than they would in other countries.

The Cultural Advantage

Living and working in India gives you access to family support networks that are unlike any other and greatly improve your quality of life. This is a fact that is rudely driven home to Indians who emigrate abroad, unfortunately too late. In India, we value working together, and coworkers frequently become like family. The focus on making decisions based on family and working together to achieve goals makes the Indian workplace a very supportive place.

There are always exceptions, of course, but our culture is all about treating coworkers and clients well. The Indian company model focuses on relationships, builds professional networks that last, and help people rise in their careers. We have 22 official languages and therefore also different regional influences. The Indian workplace tends to have a vibrant professional atmosphere that values differences and encourages open-minded thinking.

If we take the US as an example again – companies were beginning to realize how important diversity and inclusion are, until a recent major political shift caused a massive reversal on that front. Meanwhile in India, more women are becoming leaders, and companies are putting rules in place to make sure everyone has the same chances.

Work-Life Balance

I’ll agree that we’re a little behind some other countries on this front, though not nearly as behind as others like Japan and South Korea. India does have a reputation for long working hours, but the work culture is quickly changing to allow for a better balance between work and life. The Covid-19 pandemic introduced the hybrid work model which has proved to be remarkably sticky.

Today, 60% of modern Indian enterprises have adopted hybrid models, which allow for flexible work arrangements. This change shows that more people are becoming aware of how important personal time and employee well-being are.

Policies that encourage a healthier separation between work and home are replacing the ‘always-on’ lifestyle. Indian businesses are putting more money into programs for employee health and wellness, mental health, and flexible scheduling to develop work environments that last longer. This change makes India a more appealing place for professionals who want to advance in their careers and find personal fulfillment.

India – The Strategic Choice for Indians

More than ever before, being an Indian citizen in India makes so much more sense than being an immigrant abroad. We’re on our way to becoming a major player in the global economy. The ‘advanced’ economies take us very seriously now, at every level. And in the mean time, these countries are becoming increasingly hostile towards foreigners.

We are in a great position to take advantage of our country’s growth while also enjoying the unique benefits of working in one of the most exciting and opportunity-rich places in the world – our home. It has never been a better time to be an Indian in India.

Robots Might Be the Key to Independent Senior Living

June 23, 2025: More people are living longer. And most want to live independently as they age, in their own home. That hope frequently runs into challenges. Loneliness impacts the well-being of older people. Physical limitations make it harder to do chores and socialize outside the home. Memory issues can lead to missed appointments and failure to take needed medications.

Today, many of these challenges are met with the help of part-time home health aides. But the number of seniors continues to grow. In 2020 there were more people over 60 years-old than there were children under the age of five, according to the World Health Organization. By 2050, the proportion of the world’s population over 60 years old will nearly double what it was in 2015, from 12% to 22%.

IEEE Senior Member Ralf Ma explained that a growing senior population means as they retire, there’s a greater need to care for them, but a smaller workforce: “An aging population is one of the major challenges that humanity faces,” he said. “Artificial intelligence improves social productivity and fundamentally solves the problem of a decreasing labor force. Future household robots can also solve the problem of elderly care in their later years.”

The idea of robots for elder care has been discussed for years. IEEE Spectrum, for example, showed how a semi-autonomous robotic table could help older people maintain independence by simply carrying things for them.

Adding AI to Robotics

As artificial intelligence has advanced, there is increasing interest in using it to interface with robots. Because of advances in natural language processing, people regularly talk to smartphones and electronic devices that can now respond using generative AI. Shouldn’t robots be able to do the same thing?

Other advances might make it easier for robots to recognize objects in their environment or move within it.

“In the future, robots might remind them to take medicine, help with daily tasks and keep them company. They also notice emergencies and call for help when needed, making life safer and easier for seniors,” said IEEE Senior Member Márcio Teixeira.

Robots might also be able to receive data from sensors worn by the people they care for.

“Caregiving robots will also be able to monitor health using sensors and track vital changes to provide emergency services in real time when a problem has been identified,” said IEEE Graduate Student Member Haonan Guo.

A Cure for Loneliness?

One hope is that robots can have in-depth conversations with the people they care for, thus alleviating some of the loneliness that comes with living alone.

And the idea of talking to robots isn’t as strange as one might think. The first ever chatbot, called Eliza, was built with 200 lines of code close to 60 years ago, and it was designed to simulate the experience of going to a therapist.

The program was effective enough. Its designer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaum, was often concerned because “during the brief interactions with Eliza, many users began forming emotional attachments to the algorithm. They would open up to the machine and confess problems they were facing in their lives and relationships.”

The evolution of chatbots has progressed significantly, and there are already several devices on the market that use generative AI to serve as conversational chatbots or emotional support robots.

But so far, robotics isn’t advanced enough to have an all-in-one general purpose robot that can help with chores. Once there is, however, it’s only a matter of time before the robot is also given conversational capabilities.

Workplace Evolution: How AI, Flexibility, and the Hybrid Model Are Shaping Tomorrow’s Jobs

Unlocking the Potential of the Hybrid Workforce: How Flexibility, AI, and Economic Trends Are Reshaping the Future of Work

The global workforce is undergoing a seismic shift. As businesses face economic uncertainties and rapid technological changes, the hybrid workforce has emerged as a resilient and future-ready model. It blends remote and in-office work, powered by automation and driven by the need for agility, productivity, and sustainability.

hybrid work

What is a Hybrid Workforce?

A hybrid workforce is a flexible employment model that includes both remote and in-office employees, often supported by freelancers, gig workers, and digital tools like AI and automation. It is designed to:

Improve work-life balance

Optimize office space

Access talent beyond geographic boundaries

Boost productivity with technology integration

Why is the Hybrid Workforce Booming Now?

Economic Slowdown

As inflation, geopolitical instability, and market volatility impact global economies, organizations are:

Freezing hiring

Cutting operational costs

Re-evaluating workforce models for greater efficiency

Rise of AI Automation

AI tools are increasingly performing routine tasks, from data entry to customer service and marketing content generation. Businesses are investing in AI to:

Improve turnaround times

Automate repetitive processes

Reduce human error

Lower labor costs

Together, these trends are accelerating the adoption of hybrid work as a cost-effective, technology-enabled workforce strategy.

What Are the 5 Cs of Hybrid Work?

To build a successful hybrid model, organizations must focus on the 5 C’s:

Communication – Foster real-time, transparent, and inclusive communication across remote and on-site teams.

Collaboration – Leverage digital tools to facilitate seamless team interactions, knowledge-sharing, and co-creation.

Connection – Encourage employee engagement and a sense of belonging through virtual events, feedback loops, and leadership visibility.

Culture – Maintain a unified workplace culture rooted in shared values, regardless of location.

Coordination – Align teams with clearly defined goals, KPIs, and flexible work schedules that promote accountability.

Benefits of the Hybrid Workforce in an AI-Driven, Uncertain Economy

Cost Optimization

Reduced need for office space, lower travel costs, and leaner teams.

Global Talent Access

Hiring without geographical limitations opens doors to diverse and skilled professionals.

Enhanced Productivity

Remote work boosts focus, while AI automation eliminates routine tasks, enabling human workers to focus on creative and strategic work.

Workforce Resilience

Hybrid models improve continuity during disruptions—be it a pandemic, recession, or natural disaster.

Common Questions to Ask About a Hybrid Job

When evaluating a hybrid job opportunity, consider the following:

What is the expected remote-to-office work ratio?

Are there flexible working hours or fixed schedules?

What digital tools and platforms are used for communication?

How are performance and productivity measured remotely?

What resources are provided for remote work (laptops, internet reimbursement)?

How is inclusion ensured for remote team members?

What is the Biggest Challenge with the Hybrid Workplace?

The biggest challenge is maintaining cohesion and inclusion across a distributed workforce. Remote employees often report feelings of isolation, missed opportunities for visibility, and unequal access to leadership. This can lead to:

Communication breakdowns

Reduced team morale

Workplace silos

Unclear career growth pathways

Organizations must proactively address these through structured onboarding, equitable performance reviews, and digital engagement strategies.

What Does Research Say About Hybrid Working?

Recent research highlights key trends:

A 2023 McKinsey report found that 58% of employees prefer hybrid work and are more likely to stay with companies that offer it.

Microsoft’s Work Trend Index noted that hybrid workers experience higher job satisfaction and better productivity when provided with the right tools and flexibility.

The World Economic Forum suggests hybrid work can help close gender and location-based gaps but warns of rising inequality if tech access and training aren’t addressed.

Strategies to Build a Successful Hybrid-AI Workforce

Redesign Job Roles for AI Collaboration
Blend human judgment with AI tools for decision-making, data analysis, and creativity.

Provide Continuous Upskilling
Train employees in digital tools, data fluency, and soft skills like adaptability and collaboration.

Create a Culture of Trust and Inclusion
Ensure remote employees feel valued and heard through feedback channels, virtual events, and recognition programs.

Secure the Digital Workplace
Invest in cybersecurity tools, compliance training, and secure cloud infrastructure to protect hybrid workflows.

Track Outcomes, Not Attendance
Focus on deliverables, KPIs, and client satisfaction instead of time spent online or in the office.

Conclusion

The hybrid workforce isn’t just a response to temporary crises—it’s a long-term strategy for business continuity, innovation, and growth. In a world reshaped by economic slowdown and AI disruption, organizations that adopt a human-tech balanced, inclusive, and future-forward hybrid model will gain a clear competitive edge.

By focusing on the 5 Cs of hybrid work, addressing critical employee concerns, and aligning human potential with digital power, the workforce of tomorrow can be both flexible and formidable.

Screening for Autism Is AI Proving Ground in Pediatrics

May 28, 2025: Artificial intelligence is accelerating the early detection of developmental conditions like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), potentially allowing children to begin therapy earlier and significantly improving their long-term outcomes.

That has made ASD a proving ground for the use of AI in pediatric medicine. Numerous pilot projects have shown promising results and hope that machine learning techniques can be applied to other conditions.

Why It Matters

The parents of children with ASD tend to notice developmental challenges some time before the child turns 3 years old. However, there are frequently lengthy delays in testing and diagnosis. In many countries, the typical age of diagnosis is between 5 or 6 years old.

On top of that, ASD tends to be diagnosed through questionnaires rather than blood testing or genetic testing. As a result, there are concerns about standardization of the responses and children are frequently misdiagnosed.

“AI excels at identifying subtle behavioral and genetic patterns that humans may overlook due to cognitive biases or limitations, ensuring more consistent and objective early diagnoses,” said IEEE Senior Member Dheerendra Panwar.

Emerging Methods

Researchers have used a variety of methods to detect ASD. One method used sensors and imaging to detect changes in speech and language skills. IEEE Fellow Shrikanth Narayanan was awarded the IEEE 2025 James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award for that line of research.

Brain scans have also emerged as a screening tool. One group of researchers used machine learning to determine that children with autism applied different amounts of force and moved their fingers differently while playing touchscreen games, providing yet another avenue for diagnosis. Because that research is noninvasive, other researchers furthered touchscreens as a diagnostic tool and invented ways to distinguish autism from other, closely related conditions.

Next Steps

While the research has been promising, most of the results are still in the experimental phase and little has been done in clinical settings.

So far, one smartphone app has gained FDA approval as a diagnostic screening device for autism, though it should be used in conjunction with other medical information.

But the success of AI-driven autism studies have driven hope for diagnostic tools in other areas, like dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression, according to a paper found in IEEE Xplore.

Research in this area continues. If upcoming larger trials continue to show accuracy and efficiency, AI-driven developmental assessments could become a normal part of 18- or 24-month well-child visits.
