IIT Kanpur research unlocks the mysteries of Binary Fluid Dynamics

IIT Kanpur research unlocks the mysteries of Binary Fluid DynamicsBengaluru, Kanpur 25th, 2024: Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K), have unveiled new insights into the process of relaxation of turbulent binary fluids in a new study published in the journal ‘Communications Physics’ by Nature Group. This significant research on binary fluids, referring to a mixture such as oil and water, challenges existing theories of turbulent relaxation and opens new avenues in the practical application of binary fluid dynamics in science, engineering and various industries.

Upon vigorous stirring, a binary fluid becomes turbulent and form an intermediate phase with cell-like structures. The current study, led by Prof. Supratik Banerjee, along with research scholars Nandita Pan and Arijit Halder from the Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur, explores the detailed process how such a binary fluid relaxes when the stirring is withdrawn. This discovery by the IIT Kanpur team has profound implications for understanding and manipulating the properties of such fluids in industrial applications.

In particular, the research offers a quantitative analysis of how the bulk of each component fluid and their interface in a binary mixture relax back to a phase-separated state once the turbulence ceases. Interestingly, the relaxed state of the bulk turns up to be categorically different than that of the interface region. However, both relax through a universal pathway, namely the principle of vanishing nonlinear transfers (PVNLT) proposed by the same authors very recently (Banerjee, Halder and Pan, PRE Letters, 107, L043201, 2023). Furthermore, this relaxation process in binary fluids, as per the findings of the study, significantly differs from that in single-fluid systems. This distinction can be attributed to the conservation of an additional quantity called the ‘scalar energy’, which is pivotal in understanding this relaxation process.

Prof. Supratik Banerjee, Department of Physics at IIT Kanpur said, “The findings of our research hold immense potential for applications in industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, where binary emulsions like mayonnaise, antacid emulsions, shampoos, and body creams are manufactured. The findings provide essential insights into the manufacturing and preservation processes. This can lead to more efficient production methods, reducing waste and costs. By understanding the unique relaxation properties of binary fluids, companies can optimize the stability and consistency of their products, ensuring longer shelf life and improved quality.”

He added, “Additionally, in pharmaceuticals, where the stability of emulsions is crucial for the efficacy of certain medications, this research can lead to enhanced drug formulations, ultimately improving patient outcomes.”

A notable aspect of the research is the challenge it poses to the widely accepted principle of selective decay, a theory that has long dominated understandings of turbulent relaxation but fails to account for finite pressure gradients in the relaxed state of binary fluids. The application of these findings in industrial settings will not only enhance product quality and sustainability but also drive innovation in formulation and processing techniques, potentially leading to the development of new products and applications.

Washington University in St Louis propels novel efforts to internationalize graduate education for Indian students

Mumbai- The commencement of the 9th cohort of the joint Executive MBA(EMBA) programme between IIT Bombay and Washington University(WashU) in StLouis also marks the launch of new initiatives by WashU in the realm of Graduate Education for Indian students.

The inaugural edition of the IIT Bombay-WashU Dialogues, a biannual congregation designed to bring together a select group of institutional leaders from top academic institutions, public intellectuals, and industry experts to deliberate upon the most significant challenges and opportunities in higher education was held recently at the IIT Bombay campus. The event witnessed dignitaries from IIT-B and WashU engage in riveting discussions, anchored around the theme of ‘New Frontiers in Graduate Education‘. These insightful conversations were not only intellectually stimulating, but also provided a platform to explore the transformative role of Wash-U’s specialized master’s programmes through the Olin Business School, in preparing future entrepreneurs for the challenges posed by the age of artificial intelligence. Washington University’s specialized master’s programs are designed to keep aligned with the needs of a rapidly changing and competitive job market in the fields of business analytics, supply chain management, and finance.

Mugdha Kalra, a distinguished broadcast journalist with over two decades of experience and the Co-founder of ‘Not That Different,’ moderated the thought-provoking panel discussion on the changing contours of nurturing entrepreneurship in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The discourse challenged the conventional paradigm of graduate programs, which historically concentrated on furnishing specialized knowledge for job placements or advanced studies. Coveted names including Prof. Markus Baer from Olin Business School, Washington University in StLouis, Aman Goel, CEO of AHG Technologies & Cogno AI, Dr. Vikas Jain, CEO of Aarogyam Orthopaedics, and Aman Singh, Co-Founder of GradRight, shared powerful insights during the course of the discussion. The ensuing interactive Q&A session with the current Executive MBA students of the joint programme of WashU and IIT Bombay allowed students to have direct engagement with the experts, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the implications of AI on the entrepreneurial landscape. In essence, the dialogue underscored the pivotal nexus of AI and entrepreneurship in shaping the future trajectory of industries and organizations.

Gopal Shukla, CEO of the joint venture of IIT Bombay – Washington University in StLouis, said, “I foresee this collaboration as an important milestone in the journey of producing world-class talent and future global leaders.”

Further commenting on this milestoneProf. Markus Baer, Vice-Dean at the Olin Business School, Washington University in StLouis, and an award-winning scholar and teacher in the field of creativity, stated, “The IITB-WashU EMBA has been creating new opportunities for working executives who wish to balance their current professional priorities with a need to upgrade or make a transition into a new phase of their careers. The Specialized Master’s Program goes a step further to nurture early-stage young professionals who are passionate about specific domains like supply chain, analytics, finance and launch them into global careers.”

The partnership is a testament to the growing need for the internationalization of higher education and is in keeping with the principle direction of the National Education Policy and the Higher Education Commission of India Bill that is under consideration by the Parliament. The collaboration signifies a transformative shift in global education, opening doors for unparalleled opportunities for talented students across India.

“I had a dream to become an IITian, but I could never think of ways to fulfil my academic dreams due to the financial condition of my family. My father is a cloth weaver and was not able to gather enough money to get me enrolled in any institute for IIT-JEE preparation. Fortunate 40 helped me fulfil my dream and provided me free education in an unmatchable academic atmosphere. Through FIITJEE’s Fortunate 40, I was granted 100% fee waiver both on its program as well as hostel fees for four years. At FIITJEE, under the guidance of faculty and access to the top-notch study material, I could turn all my academic weaknesses into strengths. I, sincerely, thank FIITJEE for changing my life and career for better” said Anand Kumar, AIR 369, JEE Advanced 2020.

Mr. Vinod Kumar Agrawal, Managing Partner & Head, FIITJEE Dwarka Centre says, “Taking the initiative of helping the economically underprivileged to an extra high level, in the year 2008,FIITJEE started FORTUNATE 40 – An Initiative to provide World-Class Training to serious Students from financially weaker backgrounds and empowering them to succeed with Top Ranks in JEE Main, JEE Advanced & other competitive exams. With the competition for entering IITs becoming stiffer and stiffer with time, it is not an easy exercise even for aspirants with intellectual capability and potential, since methodical rigorous training and guidance is needed to crack JEE and students from economically less fortunate backgrounds often fail to avail the benefits of such coaching programmes. Our FORTUNATE 40 Program is designed to propel into the big league such students, who might get lost in absence of essential guidance and training. Over the past few years, many of these students nurtured by us have created benchmarks of success and have made us immensely proud.”
