Battling Air Pollution by Switching to Clean Mobility Solutions

Gaurav Gupta,

By  Author: Gaurav Gupta, Chief Growth Officer, JSW MG Motor India

Dec 03, 2024:- It is that time of the year, where the recurring air pollution in select regions, especially the National Capital, have soared to extremely severe levels, choking residents and engulfing the city in thick smog. Notably, from 2013 to 2021, India accounted for 59.1% in the increase of global pollution levels. As per India Fact Sheet by AQLI [Air Quality Life Index] study, around 1.3 billion inhabitants of India live in areas where PM2.5 levels exceeded the WHO guideline. Alarmingly, 67.4% of the population live in areas that exceed the country’s own national air quality standard of 40 µg/m3.

Every year, India’s northern states, in particular, battle hazardous air during the winter months of October to January due to plummeting temperatures, smoke, dust, low wind speed, vehicular emissions and crop stubble burning. This has led to air pollution levels in the national capital to soar a record high of 1,500 on the AQI in a single day, this year, according to tech company IQAir, which is 15 times the level the WHO considers satisfactory for breathing. Not just New Delhi, 39 of world’s 100 most polluted cities are from India. The major concern is particulate pollution that has seen a significant rise over the years.

Between 1998 and 2021, average annual particulate pollution in India increased by 67.7%, leading to a reduction in average life expectancy by 2.3 years. The average annual concentrations of PM2.5 in recent years are so high that 521.2 million people or about 38.9% of the current population can lose eight years of life, highlighting the adverse effect of pollution on the health of citizens. One of the major pollutants are vehicular emissions and aging vehicles with traditional technologies. While the government’s push towards replacing old and unfit cars and commercial vehicles, through the progressive Vehicle Scrappage Policy is a pragmatic step, a major move in improving the environmental crisis can be the active adoption of electric vehicles.

As per a S&P study, there is growing traffic congestion in major Indian cities with Mumbai topping the list with 430 cars per kilometre. Switching to EVs can decrease the load on air pollution due to reducing average vehicle speed in these highly congested cities. EVs are new-age vehicles that eliminate any possibility of pollutant emissions, thereby considerably alleviating the core causes of air pollution. In addition, the transition to EVs can decrease imports of fossil fuel substantially, significantly easing the country’s cash outflow.

In terms of benefits to consumers as well, compared to conventional vehicles, EVs are more cost-efficient when it comes to running cost. The average cost per kilometer of EVs is lower than that of a conventional vehicle. Most of this is due to the fact that electric motors have a better conversion rate of energy into motion than internal combustion engines which dissipates a lot of energy in form of heat. Additionally, EVs have very low maintenance costs because they don’t have as many moving parts as an internal combustion vehicle. The servicing requirements for electric vehicles are lesser than the conventional petrol or diesel vehicles. Therefore, the yearly cost of running an electric vehicle is significantly low, which is a win-win scenario for the consumers and the environment.
For war against pollution, collective action from government, corporate India, and citizens is the need of the hour. As India aims for cleaner means of transportation, campaigns that raise awareness on the importance of EVs to the people can greatly assist in changing consumer behaviour. There is a need for co-operation among auto manufacturers, and technologists to address key concerns, which are incremental acquisition cost, resale value, range anxiety, battery life, and charging infrastructure. The relentless pursuit for innovation, collaboratively, in EV technologies has led to various industry-first introductions, positively addressing these concerns/myths. However, these solutions are still in the nascent stage, and it is important for all the stakeholders to work cohesively in creating a robust framework with the right-set of solutions.

If India could bring particulate pollution down to the WHO’s recommended levels, the impact would be profound. For example, according to India Fact Sheet by AQLI, in New Delhi, residents could see a staggering increase in life expectancy of 11.9 years. Given the commitment to comprehensive policies, incentives and infrastructure development, India presents an exceptional platform to become the global frontrunner in the EV revolution. Powering sustainable mobility solutions is no longer a vision of future, it is the requirement of today to pave a cleaner and healthier India for everyone in the society.

Understanding Colorectal Cancer: Risks, Symptoms, and Prevention

Dr. V S N RAO, CONSULTANT - RADIATION ONCOLOGIST

Dr. V S N Rao, Chief Radiation Oncologist,  Director – Medical Services & HOD – Radiation Oncology,HCG Cancer Centre, Vijayawada

Simple lifestyle changes can make a significant difference in preventing colorectal cancer. By incorporating healthy habits into our daily routine, we can reduce our risk and improve overall well-being. A balanced diet rich in fiber, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption are all crucial steps in protecting ourselves against colorectal cancer. In addition to these lifestyle changes, understanding risk factors, recognizing symptoms, and undergoing regular screening can save lives.

Colorectal cancer, also known as colon cancer, is a type of cancer that affects the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It occurs when abnormal cells in the colon or rectum grow and multiply uncontrollably, forming tumors.

Risk Factors for Colorectal Cancer

Several factors increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Age is a significant factor, with risk increasing after 50 years. A family history of colorectal cancer or polyps in first-degree relatives also raises the risk. Additionally, genetic conditions such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) can increase susceptibility. Lifestyle factors, including a low-fiber, high-fat diet, physical inactivity, obesity, and smoking, also contribute to the risk.

Recognizing Symptoms of Colorectal Cancer

Early-stage colorectal cancer often has no symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, warning signs may appear. These include blood in the stool, changes in bowel movements, abdominal pain or cramping, weakness and fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. It is essential to seek medical attention if any of these symptoms persist.

The Importance of Screening and Diagnosis

Regular screening can detect colorectal cancer in its early stages, significantly improving treatment outcomes. Adults 50 and older should undergo colonoscopy every 10 years, while annual fecal occult blood tests (FOBT) and computed tomography (CT) colonography every five years are also recommended.

Prevention through Lifestyle Changes

Reducing the risk of colorectal cancer requires adopting healthy lifestyle habits. A balanced diet rich in fiber and low in fat, regular exercise of at least 30 minutes per day, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption can significantly lower the risk.

Stages and Treatment Options for Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is staged from I to IV, depending on the extent of tumor growth and spread. Treatment options vary based on the stage and severity of the disease. Surgery is often the primary treatment, involving the removal of tumors and affected tissue. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy may also be employed to kill cancer cells and prevent recurrence.

Current Research and Advances in Colorectal Cancer

Ongoing research focuses on genetic testing to identify high-risk individuals, immunotherapy to boost the immune response, and personalized medicine to tailor treatment approaches. These advancements hold promise for improving diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes. Colorectal cancer is a preventable and treatable disease.

Giant parathyroid adenoma: The rare condition

46-year-old Bharathi B talks about her struggle for the right diagnosis, as well as her surgery and recovery

Bengaluru 26 November 2024- Persistent joint pain made walking seem almost impossible for Bharathi B, a 46-year-old woman from Kolar. Initially, it was suspected that she had osteoporosis or other bone-related conditions and she kept popping painkillers between 2022 and 2024. In July 2024, when she was brought to Bangalore for further tests, it came as a shocker that the root cause of her joint pain and mobility issues was parathyroid adenoma, a noncancerous tumor located in the neck.

Parathyroid glands are usually about the size of a pea. Bharathi shared that she continued living with the tumor which had grown 6 cm long and was almost 10 times its original size, for a long time. “Initially, I ignored the pain, thinking it was caused by overworking. But, in 2024, when it became unbearable and affected my gait, I underwent tests and scans. I also visited Bangalore-based specialists on the recommendation of the local doctors,” Bharathi recalled.

The uncertain phase

Tests done in a private hospital in Bangalore showed bony lesions. It also revealed that there were no spinal issues. Bharathi was referred to oncologists in Sparsh Hospital, Bangalore, where she met Dr Suraj Hindiskere, consultant orthopedic oncosurgeon, and Dr Narayana Subramaniam, senior consultant and director, head and neck surgery and oncology and director of clinical innovation. “It was hard to digest that they suspected cancer,” said Bharathi, who had to live with the fear of possibly having cancer for about a month.

Bharathi’s biopsy and PET scan had inconclusive results. Blood tests showed increased blood calcium levels and extremely high levels of parathyroid hormone, which is produced by the parathyroid glands in the neck. However, it was later revealed that the tumor was non-cancerous.

What are parathyroid glands?

Parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck, located behind the thyroid gland. Most people have four parathyroid glands. “Parathyroid hormones control calcium metabolism. When there is a tumor in these glands, it results in overactivity of parathyroid hormone, leading to high levels of calcium in the blood,” added Dr Subramaniam.

Dr Subramaniam

Parathyroid adenoma and its misleading symptoms

Dr Subramaniam explained that the symptoms of parathyroid adenoma are often indirect. They include kidney stones, abdominal pain, difficulty in urinating and bone fractures without external impacts. “Given the symptoms are non-specific, we need more awareness about these disorders. In some cases, affected people may be misdiagnosed with bone disorders like osteoporosis, bone cancers or cancers that have spread secondarily to the bone,” said Dr Subramaniam.

He further explained that the metabolism of parathyroid adenoma is slightly different from cancer; hence, it is not revealed in a PET scan. “In Bharathi’s case, the calcium and parathyroid hormone levels were high. So we did a specialized scan called sestamibi scan, a nuclear test specific to parathyroid glands. This revealed a large 6 cm adenoma (hormonally active tumor). It was found in the neck and extended into the chest,” he explained.

Surgery and recovery

In July 2024, Bharathi was operated on, and a 6-cm tumor was removed. In her case, it was situated in front of the windpipe adjacent to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (which controls vocal cord movement and voice quality) and the brachiocephalic veins (large veins draining the neck and upper limb). However, her voice was not affected due to the tumor.

Bharathi was told that, if left untreated, the high calcium levels in the blood could result in damage and failure of multiple organs, multiple fractures, and renal dysfunction. “Unfortunately, in such conditions, diagnosis is delayed, and people come to us with complications,” said Dr Subramaniam. However, Bharathi didn’t face these issues. Further, the parathyroid hormone levels in her blood came back to the normal range post-surgery. However, parathyroid adenomas can recur. “All of us have four parathyroid glands and in Bharathi’s case, we have removed one of them. There are remote chances of the other three glands turning into an adenoma, but it is less than 5% and rarely seen.”

Bharathi’s recovery brought smiles to the family and the medical team that treated her. “Earlier, I used to limp, and my mobility was affected. Now I’m slowly regaining my strength. I was able to start walking around freely in the last two months,” she said, adding that she is no longer on any medications.
