The hero who refused to let his physical disability hinder his success

Vipin Jain

Real heroes are those who dare to fight all the challenges life throws at them and never let their difficulties stop them from achieving their goals. Vipin Jain is a shining (living) example of someone who didn’t let any challenges stop him from reaching his goals. His courage and determination have been an inspiration to many, embodying what it means to be a true hero.

Despite difficulties in walking due to a childhood polio attack, Vipin Jain’s passion and courage enabled him to become the founding partner of a multi-locational CA firm with a team of over 50+ people in places such as Mumbai, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Pune, Limdi (Gujarat), Indore, and the USA. In 2003, he founded M/S Manoj Vipin & Co. under the leadership of his elder brother, CA. Manoj Jain.

Vipin was born into a humble family on December 18, 1975, in Limdi, a small village located in the Dahod District of Gujarat. However, eight months after his birth, his family was shocked to learn that he would be unable to walk due to poliomyelitis in the lower part of his waist. After many years of struggle, Vipin was given new courage to walk at
the age of twelve, when the Lions Club provided him with a tricycle. Despite facing numerous challenges for 20 years, he was determined to take back control of his life. Fortunately, in 1994, Dr. Prakash Bangani, a prominent orthopedic surgeon from Indore, performed multiple corrective surgeries on his limbs, and Vipin never looked back.
However, this was only the beginning, and the road ahead was not going to be easy. Talking about his journey, Vipin said, “My passion for living a life never let me look back.” (Vipin completed his graduation in B.Com and chartered Accountancy along with all these surgeries and rehabilitation )

After graduating, Vipin chose to pursue his dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant and is now a flourishing C.A. After undergoing eight successful surgeries, he has regained the ability to carry out all his activities independently. Thanks to his perseverance and the support of his family, Vipin has overcome 80% disability with the
use of calipers and Canadian crutches, standing tall as an example for all to follow. His progress is also attributed to the hard work of Dr. Bangani and the blessings from his acquaintances.

Vipin is an integral part of the Indore center of Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti, a Jaipur-based NGO, where he is serving as the Honorary Auditor and Advisor. This NGO provides free calipers and Jaipur Foot to the poor and handicapped. Additionally, he is a trustee of the Arihant Charitable Trust in Indore and part of the core management team of the Arihant Hospital & Research Centre, a 100-bed state-of-the-art multi speciality hospital run by the Arihant Charitable Trust.

Vipin, who has been living with a disability all his life, has continued to live an adventurous and passionate life. For the past 15 years, he’s been driving a modified car and traveling around the world – a testament to the fact that he always goes above and beyond his expectations. Despite his physical limitations, Vipin has achieved tremendous success in his career. As a Chartered Accountant, he is currently leading a large team spread across multiple locations and has been doing so for the last two decades.

Vipin is an avid adventurer who skydived from a staggering 14000 feet in Los Angeles back on June 24, 2018 – a testament to his daring spirit. He has been recognized with many awards, such as the Special Personality Award by the Lions Club Limdi, the Divyang Ratn Award by Kalgi Foundation and Gujarat University,, Umeed Ratna by Umeed Foundation Jaipur, and Divyang Entrepreneur Award 2022 by CEDA Ahmedabad,. The Muscle-Immunity Connection: How Muscle Health Can Enhance Your Body’s Defenses

In today’s fast-paced world, we tend to be constantly rushing and getting caught up in busy routines and often neglect our health in the process. However, with rising infections including the flu, and having experienced a global pandemic, being in control of our health and building a strong immune system is more important than ever.

While there is no magic bullet for enhancing immunity, Dr. Irfan Shaikh, Head, of Medical & Scientific Affairs at Abbott’s Nutrition business talks about why muscles matter and how gaining strong muscles can significantly boost your immune system.

Muscles and their role in immunity building

Muscles are vital for good health. Your muscles’ do more than simply allow you to move and maintain balance. In fact, they also help you maintain strength and support your ability to partake in activities like playing sports, dancing, walking your dog, and more. Your muscles also play a key role in activating your immune cells. With the muscle tissue providing the energy and amino acids required by the immune system to function, it also protects us against infection. Muscles also form a critical source of strength and energy as you recover. When you are sick or hospitalized and your body isn’t getting enough of the nutrients it needs to recover, the body naturally breaks down muscle tissue to meet that requirement.

Poor muscle health can gradually affect a person’s ability to continue doing even the smallest of daily activities, such as walking or eating.[i] Considering the research available today, aging can result in muscle loss – for instance, from age 40 onwards, adults lose up to 8 percent of their muscle mass per decade, and after 70 years of age, that rate may double.[ii] To stay healthy, it thus becomes extremely important to maintain and build muscle health.

Building stronger muscles

Losing muscle mass is natural, but its rate of progression and negative effects don’t have to be especially since your immune health greatly depends on your muscle health. A chair challenge test is an easy way to gauge your muscle strength. The time you take to do 5 sit-ups on a chair of approx. height 43 cms (1.4 feet) can tell you your muscle age. One can also visit https://muscleagetest.in/ to get a better understanding of their muscle age. Here are 3 easy ways in which you can build muscle strength:

  1.  Make time for physical activity: Regular physical activity can go a long way to make muscles stronger. You can begin by including simple activities like walking, swimming, cycling, jogging, or even climbing stairs in your daily routine. You can also try lifting weights and gradually add more weight and reps over time, or exercises with a stretch band. Just an hour of physical activity on a regular basis can contribute tremendously to your muscle strength and overall health and wellbeing. This can also enhance your body’s ability to resist infections and effectively combat harmful bacteria.[iii]
  2.  Meet your daily protein needs: Protein is essential to build muscle and it’s important to consume an adequate amount of it every day. Consuming around 25 to 30 grams of protein per meal is optimal for your body to support muscle building and tissue repair.[iv] You can obtain protein from a number of sources such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, tofu, and beans
  3.  Fulfill your nutritional requirements: Good nutrition and muscle health go hand in hand. After all, food fuels every cell in your body and supports muscle strength. For this, consuming foods that are rich in not only protein but also Calcium and Vitamin D is important. Some dietary options you can consider to gain muscle – beyond protein – include leafy vegetables, dairy products, fish, mushrooms, and soybeans.

Additionally, to build muscle bass, your body needs beta-hydroxy-beta-methyl butyrate (HMB), which is naturally produced when the body breaks down certain amino acids. While you can consume foods like avocado, grapefruit, and cauliflower which contain this in small quantities, you may also need to use supplements, such as Ensure HMB, which provides 32 essential nutrients, which can help you improve muscle strength.

Healthy muscles are critical for maintaining strength and the ability to perform daily activities that make life meaningful and fulfilling. It’s not always easy to adequately support muscle and immune health but by working towards building a healthy lifestyle program with a balance of the right nutrition and exercises, good muscle health can be achieved.

Sports-Related Orthopedic Injuries: Understanding the Risks and Preventative Measures

Dr. Akhilesh Yadav

Dr. Akhilesh Yadav – Associate Director, Orthopedics & Joint Replacement, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali

Participating in sports is an excellent way to stay active and healthy, but it also comes with the risk of sustaining injuries. Sports-related orthopedic injuries can be severe and can result in significant long-term effects if not adequately managed. In the recent past as well, several known athletes like Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, and others have endured injuries that have resulted in their exclusion from the national team.

Sports-related orthopedic injuries can affect any part of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. These injuries are often the result of overuse, improper technique, inadequate conditioning, or accidents during play. The most common sports-related orthopedic injuries include sprains, strains, fractures, and dislocations.

Sprains are injuries to ligaments, which are the connective tissues that connect bones to each other. People get sprains when the joint is forced beyond its normal range of motion, causing the ligament to stretch or tear. Ankle sprains are the most common type of sprain and are frequently seen in sports like basketball and soccer.

Strains are injuries to muscles or tendons, which are the tissues that attach muscles to bones. Strains occur when a muscle or tendon is stretched too far or torn. Hamstring strains are common in sports like track and field, while tennis elbow is a type of strain seen in tennis players.

Fractures occur when a bone is broken, either partially or completely. Fractures can occur due to a sudden impact or as a result of repetitive stress. Stress fractures are common in sports that involve running or jumping, such as track and field and basketball.

Dislocations occur when a bone is forced out of its joint, often as a result of a sudden impact or fall. Shoulder dislocations are common in sports like football and hockey.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury is a common injury that occurs in sports, particularly those that involve sudden changes in direction or jumping. The ACL is one of the major ligaments in the knee joint, responsible for stabilizing the knee and preventing excessive forward movement of the tibia (shinbone) relative to the femur (thighbone).

ACL injuries are characterized by sudden pain and swelling in the knee, often accompanied by a “popping” sound at the time of injury. Athletes with ACL injuries typically require surgical reconstruction of the ligament followed by a lengthy period of rehabilitation before returning to their sport. Proper conditioning and strengthening of the muscles surrounding the knee can help prevent ACL injuries.

Preventing sports-related orthopedic injuries involves several key measures. Proper conditioning and warm-up exercises are essential to help prepare the body for physical activity. Adequate strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness are all essential components of a comprehensive conditioning program. Proper technique and form are also crucial, as improper technique can increase the risk of injury.

Using appropriate safety equipment can also help prevent sports-related orthopedic injuries. Helmets, pads, and braces can provide additional protection and support to vulnerable areas of the body. Choosing the right equipment for the sport and ensuring that it fits properly is essential.

Proper rest and recovery are also essential components of injury prevention. Overuse injuries are common in sports that involve repetitive motions, such as running or throwing. Taking time to rest and recover between activities can help prevent these types of injuries.

Whenever a sportsperson endures an injury, it is essential to get prompt and appropriate treatment. Ignoring or attempting to play through an injury can result in additional damage and prolonged recovery time. Treatment for sports-related orthopedic injuries typically involves a combination of rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE). In some cases, immobilization or surgery may be necessary.

Rehabilitation is also an essential component of injury treatment. Physical therapy and several exercises can help restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion following an injury. Gradual return to physical activity under the guidance of a healthcare professional can help prevent re-injury and ensure a full recovery.

In conclusion, sports-related orthopedic injuries can have significant long-term effects on an individual’s physical health and well-being. However, many of these injuries can be prevented through proper conditioning, technique, and safety equipment. In the event of an injury, prompt and appropriate treatment and rehabilitation are crucial to ensuring a full recovery. By taking proactive steps to prevent and manage sports-related orthopedic injuries, individuals can enjoy the benefits of sports participation while minimizing the risk of injury.
