Reclaiming Leadership from the Margins: How HopeWorks Empowers Girls to Be Architects of Their Future

July 8, 2025 – What does leadership mean when it emerges from poverty, loss, and invisibility? The HopeWorks Foundation is responding to this question in extraordinary ways by recasting girls from India’s most marginalized communities as leaders of their own destiny and agents of change in the lives of others.

HopeWorks CEO and founder Jacintha Jayachandran describes a profoundly personal shift in her approach to leadership. “When we started our scholarship program, I thought making education accessible was sufficient. Now I understand that leadership is not born its developed. And sometimes, it starts where hope appears to be most invisible.”

This epiphany was ignited by Manicka Valli, a formerly shy student from Madurai whose life was disrupted by poverty and family tragedy. Now, Manicka is a confident history graduate, state-level athlete, and LIFTS scholar who speaks eloquently about her dreams. “She taught us that leadership is not a gift it’s grit in action,” Jayachandran explained.

Since its founding, HopeWorks has served more than 5,100 students, granted 1,427 scholarships, delivered 10,000+ menstrual supplies, and served 115,288 meals. But behind all the statistics, it’s the internal changes that truly matter.

Girls such as Shakthipriya, who once wrote off her entrepreneurial aspirations as “unrealistic,” now owns Millecious, a millet food business, part-time alongside her full-time finance job. Or Priya Jennifer, who transformed from a reluctant life-skills training attendee into the head of 400 employees at Brinks India after standing up and saying she was ready to manage.

These aren’t individual anecdotes they’re indicative of a change in what empowerment actually is. “We came to understand that access wasn’t sufficient. We needed to break down the constraining beliefs girls held about what’s possible for them,” Jayachandran said.

The impact of the foundation ripples out further than the individual. More than 40% of HopeWorks alumni come back as mentors, creating a leadership ripple effect. Past recipients now instruct younger students, lobby for menstrual health in slum areas, and start micro-enterprises.

This model is aligned with six UN Sustainable Development Goals, ranging from Gender Equality and Quality Education to Good Health & Well-being and Decent Work. Expansion to nine new locations, including Odisha, Pune, and Gulbarga, is currently on the cards for HopeWorks. Strategic collaborations with organisations such as Infosys Springboard, Buzz Women, Mentor Together, and SVATAH Foundation are facilitating this comprehensive development strategy.

The question ahead isn’t just about growth it’s about sustaining transformation. “We’re not only scaling numbers. We’re scaling belief systems,” Jayachandran emphasized. “Because once a girl sees herself as a leader, she doesn’t just transform she transforms the world around her.”

HopeWorks’ vision for 2026 is to directly serve 1,000+ girls and impact 80,000+ through advocacy. But most importantly, it seeks to redefine the narrative about what leadership is beginning from the edges and moving towards influence.

Not Your Average Teenagers: How These Gurgaon Students Are Transforming Healthcare and Education for Hundreds

National, July 7, 2025: At an age when most teens are focused on school exams and social media, a group of high school students from St. Xaviers High School – Gurugram, are rewriting what youth leadership looks like. Through two student-led initiatives—Heal.Ed, which bridges gaps in healthcare and education through workshops on brain development, mental wellness, and health awareness, and Project Spark, which offers academic support, skill-building, and career exposure—these young changemakers are driving real impact for children from underserved communities. Their latest collaboration, Zariyaa, took place on July 6th at Club Florence, Gurgaon.

Organised entirely by students, Zariyaa was both a fundraiser and a talent showcase, featuring performances by 20+ children from NGOs the groups have been working with. These children—many of whom had little prior exposure to the arts—took the stage to perform in music, dance, and theatre, highlighting the confidence and creativity nurtured through months of workshops, mentorship, and support.

“We wanted to give these kids not just resources, but also recognition,” says Seerat Khanna, a Grade 11 student at St. Xavier’s High School and the driving force behind both initiatives.

In addition to the performances, the event included a panel discussion with experts from the education, health, and social impact sectors, discussing long-term solutions for empowering underserved communities. The goal was not only to raise funds, but to raise awareness and involvement.

The name Zariyaa, which means medium or pathway, reflects the broader mission of the event—to create space for unheard voices, untapped talent, and unseen impact. All funds raised will go directly toward continuing Heal.Ed and Project Spark’s programming with these children.

From Abandonment to Impact: How RSS Sewa Bharti Nurtured a Slum Boy Now Transforming Millions of Lives!

The inspiring journey of an abandoned child from the slums of Delhi to a globally recognized social reformer is a testament to resilience and the power of selfless service. Today, he has transformed the lives of millions of underprivileged children and women. His remarkable success would not have been possible without the nurturing support of RSS Sewa Bharti, which provided him with shelter, education, and values after he was abandoned by his parents at the age of two, along with his three-day-old infant sister, in one of Delhi’s most crime-prone slums.

At the age of eight, he started working as a child laborer, selling balloons and doing other small jobs to support himself and his younger sister. His life changed when RSS Sewa Bharti gave him refuge, shielding him from crime and exploitation. The organization not only provided him with education but also instilled in him the virtues of selfless service, discipline, and patriotism, values that became the foundation of his lifelong mission.

After witnessing and experiencing atrocities at an early age, he struggled to save his sister from child marriage and the dowry system. This experience later motivated him to dedicate his life to providing social protection and upliftment for young girls and children who were being exploited due to poverty and illiteracy.

Yes, this former child laborer is now globally recognized for his large-scale social innovations, which he has successfully implemented at the grassroots level, directly impacting over 30 Lakhs Lives. His efforts have earned him two national awards from the Government of India and recognition from the UN Secretary-General at the Commission on the Status of Women.

He is Devendra Kumar, the founder of Ladli Foundation, an Indian-international grassroots  organization addressing some of the most pressing social issues affecting the most vulnerable populations.

Devendra’s relentless efforts have earned him two National Awards from the Government of India, along with admiration from four successive Presidents of India—Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Pranab Mukherjee, Ram Nath Kovind, and the current President, Droupadi Murmu. In 2020, his exceptional service to society led to his nomination for the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, by the Union Ministry of Social Justice. Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan recognized his tireless work in rescuing women and girls from exploitation, bestowing upon him the title of “True Hero.”

His expertise in international relations and public policy has gained global attention, with his recommendations being featured at high-level United Nations forums. During the 65th Commission on the Status of Women in 2021, UN Secretary-General António Guterres commended his advocacy for women’s health and efforts to prevent child marriage.

Today, Devendra leads the Ladli Foundation India, Ladli Foundation USA and Ladli Foundation Africa , leveraging global platforms to drive social change. He has successfully organized prestigious diplomatic summits, including the INDIA & BRICS Summit and the Climate Conclave, bringing together world leaders to discuss pressing social challenges.

His journey, shaped by the values instilled by RSS Sewa Bharti, stands as a beacon of hope. From an abandoned child to a celebrated social reformer, Devendra Kumar’s story proves that with the right guidance and unwavering determination, even the most challenging circumstances can be transformed into a force for good. His work continues to inspire, ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of a better future.

His organization operates with the same spirit of selfless service that Sangh embodies, reaching out to the most vulnerable sections of society. From being an abandoned child to a globally recognized social reformer, his journey exemplifies how the right support and values can turn adversity into an opportunity to uplift millions.

His story is an inspiration for marginalized children worldwide. His transformation, nurtured by Sewa Bharti, proves that with the right guidance and compassion, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome. Today, his initiatives not only impact millions in India but also serve as a model for global social welfare efforts, ensuring that no child is left behind.

The Monsoon Illusion: Why Boiling Water Isn’t Enough Anymore

By Dr. Anil Kumar, Water Scientist, Eureka Forbes

As monsoon rains sweep across our towns and cities, they bring much-needed relief from the heat and a renewed sense of vitality to our surroundings. But beneath this welcome transformation lies an often-overlooked danger: contaminated drinking water. For generations, boiling water has been seen as a reliable way to ensure its safe to consume. In 2025, however, that belief is dangerously outdated.

The Boiling Myth

Boiling water can effectively eliminate many biological contaminants bacteria, viruses, and parasites. But it is powerless against chemical pollutants like heavy metals, pesticide residues, and industrial waste. These contaminants, increasingly common due to urban runoff, deteriorating infrastructure, and monsoon-related flooding, remain invisible to the naked eye but pose serious long-term health risks.

During monsoons, overflowing drains and compromised sewer systems often infiltrate groundwater and municipal supplies. Even treated water can pick up contaminants like arsenic, lead, or nitrates by the time it reaches your tap. The real danger lies in the false sense of security boiled water may appear clean and taste fine, but it may still be loaded with harmful toxins that boiling can’t remove. The shift to Intelligent Purification traditional practices like boiling or basic filtration are no longer sufficient. Research confirms that modern water challenges require advanced, multi-stage purification systems RO, UV, UF, and activated carbon filtration to eliminate both biological and chemical threats. Yet, many households continue to rely on outdated habits, unaware of the invisible risks in every glass.

Today’s water challenges are far more complex than those of the past making outdated solutions like basic filtration and boiling insufficient. Ensuring modern water safety now requires intelligent, multi-stage purification systems designed to tackle both visible and invisible threats.

“Boiling water may have worked in the past, but it’s no longer enough,” says Dr. Anil Kumar, Water Scientist, Eureka Forbes. “Today’s water safety calls for intelligent, multi-stage purification. At Eureka Forbes, our mission is to provide every Indian household with solutions that go beyond promises delivering purity, drop by drop.”

This monsoon, don’t just boil purify with purpose. Opt for water solutions designed to tackle today’s challenges, not outdated beliefs. Because when it comes to your family’s health, safety shouldn’t be an illusion it should be absolute.

IN-SPACe Facilitates Transfer of 10 ISRO Technologies to 6 Indian Industries

Ahmedabad, India: In another key step toward advancing India’s space industrial capabilities, the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe) facilitated the transfer of ten state-of-the-art technologies developed by ISRO to six Indian industries across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments. The tripartite Technology Transfer Agreements (TTAs) were signed between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the recipient industries, and IN-SPACe at the IN-SPACe headquarters in Ahmedabad.

The technology transfers aim to give private players the opportunity to access the developed technologies available with ISRO, enabling them to use space-related technology for commercial applications in space as well as other sectors. It also looks at deepening industry participation, enable indigenisation, and reduce dependency on foreign technologies in critical areas of satellite launch, ground station infrastructure, and geospatial applications.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe, appreciated the proactive role of Indian industry and remarked- “The transfer of these technologies marks yet another significant step towards empowering the private sector to harness and commercialize space technologies. ISRO has a flourishing repository of R&D in space technologies and it is time we leverage that to the optimum to strengthen India’s space industrial ecosystem, and in that, industry-led innovation will play a key role.”

At the signing of the agreements, Shri Rajeev Jyoti, Director, Technical Directorate, IN-SPACe said “These technologies are vital and currently sourced from foreign suppliers. With this transfer, we are taking a pivotal step toward building indigenous capabilities within India.  ISRO, IN-SPACe, and NSIL will collaboratively provide comprehensive handholding support to all the industry players to ensure successful absorption of the technology.”

Among the technologies transferred are two advanced inertial sensors—the Laser Gyroscope and the Ceramic Servo Accelerometer—developed by ISRO’s Inertial Systems Unit, for potential use in satellite launch vehicles. These technologies have been transferred to M/s Zetatek Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, a company with over 25 years of expertise in Inertial Navigation System (INS) testing, calibration, and QA/QT equipment. It makes Zetatek the first company from India to acquire such a niche technology, which is currently being imported by different sectors.

In the midstream segment, three technologies related to ground station operations—S/X/Ka tri-band dual circular polarised monopulse feed, tri-axis antenna control servo system, and Ku/C/L and S Band Cassegrain feed—developed ISRO have been transferred to M/s Avantel and M/s Jisnu Communications, both Hyderabad-based firms specialising in end-to-end communications solutions for space and defence platforms. These technologies, currently sourced from foreign vendors, will enable self-reliance in critical ground station infrastructure.

On the downstream front, two geospatial models developed by SAC/ISRO for pest forewarning and semi-physical crop yield estimation were transferred to Amnex Info Technologies, Ahmedabad, to be deployed in agricultural decision-making and crop protection.

A compact, multi-parameter, portable bathymetry system developed by NRSC/ISRO has been transferred to M/s Jalkruti Water Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad, to enable UAV-based integration for water resource monitoring.

Further, VSSC/ISRO’s ceramic-based flame-proof coating technology—originally developed for launch vehicle applications—has been acquired by M/s Ramdev Chemicals, Ahmedabad, for wider industrial applications.
