Survey: 72% of Financial Institutions to Invest in ESG Technology

CHENNAI, India, July 16, 2024– BCT Digital, a global digital transformation company delivering FinTech, RegTech, and SustainTech solutions, in collaboration with Chartis Research, has published the findings of their extensive ESG and Climate Risk Survey. Titled ‘Chartis Market View: ESG and Climate Risk Survey’, it analyzes how global financial institutions are integrating ESG and climate risk factors into their risk management and investment decision-making processes.

BCT-Digital Logo

The survey captured insights from 77 ESG and climate risk practitioners representing financial institutions with assets under management ranging from $1 bn to $500 bn based in the APAC, North America, Europe and the MENA region. It is found that over 72% of global financial institutions plan to spend upto $500,000 or more on ESG technology. In this bid, over half of global financial institutions feel keeping up with changing regulations as the biggest ESG-related challenge.

Key findings:

Most firms review their ESG strategies quarterly, spending an average of $250,000 to $500,000 annually, with North American and European institutions more likely to exceed $500,000. The next year’s investments are expected to focus on ESG data and scoring products, governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) solutions, and regulatory compliance and reporting tools.

As per the findings, when it comes to ESG, 52% of the respondents indicated regulatory compliance, being the most significant challenge. About 48% of the respondents identified risk assessment and mapping relevant ESG whereas another 48% viewed integrating ESG into operational and financial workflows as significant challenges.

With respect to climate risk, the main challenges are meeting regulatory stress testing expectations (67%), accurate GHG (Greenhouse gas) accounting (56%) and integrating climate risk operationally into product lines (50%). Most firms spend between $250,000 and $500,000 on climate risk solutions, with future investments likely to be directed towards emissions data, transitional climate risk modeling, and regulatory reporting tools.

On the report launch, Jaya Vaidhyanathan, CEO, BCT Digital, said: “We are happy to present this crucial survey which aimed to uncover trends, challenges, and strategic priorities within the ESG and climate risk space, addressing key questions such as the evolution of technology markets, demographic impacts on risk planning, and the primary drivers of firms’ strategic agendas. As highlighted by the findings, there is a lack of uniformity in ESG and climate risk reporting standards; different countries and regions may have their own frameworks and definitions. This disparity makes it challenging for multinational corporations to maintain consistent reporting. The detailed findings of this survey provide valuable insights for financial institutions aiming to enhance their ESG and climate risk management frameworks.”

“BCT Digital is ready to tackle the growing needs of the ESG and climate risk markets, and based on this comprehensive survey, we are now even more confident about addressing the intersection of these two fields,” Jaya added.

Sid Dash, Chief Researcher, Chartis, expressed, “Compliance with ESG guidelines can be a challenge for many financial institutions, and data and data management are central to the compliance process. Having a fully integrated framework which enables data management across the entire value chain is crucial.”

Vaisala Enhances Rechargeable Battery Manufacturing with Fast-Response Dew Point Measurements

VANTAA, Finland, July 15, 2024  — As the world transitions to electrification and green energy, the demand for more powerful and safer rechargeable batteries—such as lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and solid-state—is rapidly growing. Vaisala, a global leader in measurement instruments and intelligence for climate action, is addressing this need by enhancing manufacturing processes with accurate, highly responsive dew point probes.

Battery manufacturing

The midstream stage of battery manufacturing involves electrode production, cell assembly, and cell finalization. It is during these steps – in dry rooms, dry booths, and glove boxes – that humidity control is especially important to prevent unwanted reactions. These include lithium-forming lithium hydroxide and hydrogen gas, lithium salt-forming hydrogen fluoride (HF), and electrolyte-generating corrosive byproducts. Effective drying processes are critical to:

  • Protecting the safety of people and materials: The chemicals used are sensitive to moisture and present an explosion risk if exposed to elevated moisture levels.
  • Maximizing the yield of the process and maintain quality: Excessive moisture negatively impacts the quality and lifetime of batteries.
  • Optimizing energy consumption: Maintaining dry room ambient dryness at optimal levels avoids costly over-drying and under-drying.

Innovative Dew Point Measurement Solutions

The ambient dew point temperature in dry rooms is maintained at around -30 ºC to -40 ºC. Low humidity is controlled by a high-end dryer that pushes dry air into the room. This is one of the most energy-intensive parts of the whole battery manufacturing process, so minimizing over-drying is key to the plant’s overall energy efficiency.

The dew point sensors in the dryer need to be highly responsive to control the dryer quickly and accurately in order to avoid under or over-drying. It is important to note that sensor accuracy alone will not be enough to avoid these issues. A probe with a fast response time, and without the complex internal measurement control loops of some analyzers, makes all the difference in dryer and overall dry room control. The volume of air being dried and pushed through is huge, so the energy consumption can easily skyrocket if the drying process is not optimized.

Newer technologies such as all solid-state batteries may require drier conditions with the dew point temperature as low as -80 ºC in individual processing steps. These steps are usually performed inside dry booths or glove boxes because it is not economical to dry the whole dry room to the same extremely low dew point level. Humidity levels in dry booths and glove boxes are monitored at critical points.

Vaisala’s DRYCAP® Technology

Vaisala’s DRYCAP® technology is the world’s most used technology for dryer monitoring and control. It is a field-proven innovation that provides accurate, stable, and fast-response dew point measurement with minimum drift. Vaisala has achieved this leading position not just because of innovation, but also because of a firm commitment to product quality and reliability, with short lead and delivery times, combined with world-class levels of service.

Versatile, cost-effective solutions for the whole process

The sensors needed to monitor humidity in the drying process of midstream battery manufacturing don’t need to be expensive ultra-high precision laboratory-level devices. For example, the miniature dew point transmitter DMT143 is a simple, cost-effective device for accurate, stable, and fast-response dew point measurements in air dryers and glove boxes.

Vaisala adds value by providing holistic systems and packages, such as the Vaisala Indigo ecosystem. The core of the Indigo offering is the transmitters and compatible probes with DRYCAP® technology. Indigo family products are versatile and easy to install, use, and service. Transmitters that support various fieldbuses and include built-in displays and other advanced features can be combined with probes such as the DMPx. This enables you to measure accurately and reliably in demanding processes with harsh chemicals, high temperatures, and ultra-low humidity. This is why the Indigo ecosystem offers the best solution for humidity monitoring and control in midstream battery production.

Indian MSME & Tech industry look Forward to a Promising Budget

Delhi NCR: The Indian MSME and tech sectors have several expectations from the government budget to foster growth and resilience. MSMEs seek easier access to credit with simplified loan approval processes and reduced interest rates to help overcome liquidity challenges. Enhanced credit guarantee schemes are expected to reduce lending risks, encouraging more financial institutions to lend to MSMEs. Programs aimed at boosting equity infusion would strengthen the capital base of these enterprises, enabling them to invest in growth and innovation.

Taxation relief is another critical expectation, with MSMEs hoping for reduced corporate tax rates and simplified tax compliance procedures to improve profitability and reduce administrative burdens. Additionally, there is a call for more incentives for digital adoption and technology upgrades, enabling MSMEs to stay competitive in an increasingly digital economy.

Mr. Pravin Dubey, Founder- WebClixs said, “The Indian IT sector, a key driver of the economy, has a clear vision for the upcoming Lok Sabha budget: solidify India’s position as a global IT leader.
