The Ministry of Culture in association with Heartfulness brings the largest spirituality congregation, Global Spirituality Mahotsav 2024

Hyderabad, 12 March 2024: The Ministry of Culture (Special Cell) and Heartfulness are going to hold a one-of-a-kind spiritual congregation, called the Global Spirituality Mahotsav from March 14 to 17 at Kanha Shanti Vanam, the headquarters of Heartfulness, situated at the outskirts of Hyderabad. The event will bring spiritual leaders from all faiths and beliefs to one place at the world’s largest meditation centre. At a press conference held today, Chief Guests, the Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North-Eastern Region of India Shri Kishan Reddy ji, Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami ji – Sri Vaishnavism, Shri Bodhamayananda – Director of Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence and Rev. Daaji – Guide of Heartfulness & President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission announced the upcoming Global Spirituality Mahotsav and its significance. The Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Mr. Jagdeep Dhankhar, will grace the summit on 15 and 16 March respectively. The four-day spirituality summit being brought by the Ministry of Culture (Govt. of India) and Heartfulness has the theme of “Inner Peace to World Peace”. The conference aims to bring interfaith dialogues and help people of every age and every walk of life connect with spirituality in daily life.

Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Culture and Development of North-Eastern Region of India Shri Kishan Reddy ji said, “India showcases culture, spirituality and a way of life which is inspiring the world. We are standing as an example to the world with our spiritual knowledge and have become the Spiritual Capital of the world. Our country is the birthplace of many religions with us spreading peace and light in life. The philosophical approach of ours is very unique. The entire world is looking towards India for physical and mental well-being through Yoga and meditation. Crores of people worldwide are coming to India to learn Puranas, Upanishads, and Vedas, and understand our culture and lifestyle, and look up to the great men and women of this country for inspiration and blessings. Spiritual tourism has been rising in India. In the Global Spirituality Mahotsav which will be held at the largest meditation centre of the world under the keen guidance of Rev. Daaji, the Spiritual gurus are coming to one platform towards world peace – it is the goal of the MoC with the help of the spiritual gurus today to bring the essence of all religions together for world peace. Therefore the Govt. of India and Modi Ji have decided to support this conference. In the next few years (until 2047 for the centenary of India’s independence) we need to bring love, peace and solidarity among all in the world including all the religious heads. In the G20 summit, we had decided upon the ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. The upcoming conference is also in the continuation of that theme – of solidarity among all classes, castes, and religions and bring them spiritually together across every country and reach to every individual from Kanha Shanti Vanam.”

Over 100,000 participants are expected to participate. The summit is slated to host various panel discussions, cultural programs associated with spirituality, an exhibition showcasing India’s spiritual history, narratives of peace, and an immersive experience for spirituality through books and music. There will also be panchakarma centres set up for those who want to avail wellness and therapeutic sessions. The role of eminent people from film, music, and sports in sensitizing people to partake in the Global Spirituality Mahotsav is also being sought, and elaborate arrangements for the participants are also being discussed.

Some of the organizations coming together for the Global Spirituality Mahotsav are the Ramakrishna Mission, Parmarth Niketan, The Art of Living Foundation, The Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Archbishop of Hyderabad, Rev Cardinal Anthony Poola, Chinna Jiyar Swami, The Brahma Kumaris, Patanjali Yogpeeth, Maharishi Foundation (Transcendental Meditation), Isha Foundation, International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Archdiocese of Hyderabad, Rashtra Sant Tukdoji Maharaj Akhil Bhartiya Shri Gurudeo Seva Mandal, Sant Dnyaneshwar Devasthan, Alandi, All India Imam Organization, Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur and the Shri Ram Chandra Mission/ Heartfulness.

Chinna Jeeyar Swami ji – Guru of Sri Vaishnavism said, “Our MoC and especially Sriman Krishna Reddy Garu who took the initiative organising this event is great at a moment to arrange all the religious and spiritual leaders and at a massive scale Kanha Shanti Vanam. The purpose of every religion is to unite people, but each religion has some point that is unique for their own selves and which is common for all – just like good food, water and the air are common for all. So is peace for the soul and is common for all which need to be picked up and be practiced. As we have five fingers – each finger is unique but all should work together. The four days at Kanha will help discuss and share with each other and make a plan of action to work together. Our Bharat should become a strong foundation for the centenary celebrations for the independence of Bharat.”

Swami Bodhmayananda ji – Shri Ramakrishna Math said, “Religion is a very misleading term therefore there is misunderstanding among people. We must work together on the path of truth. Condensation of milk alone can help make a tasty ‘kheer’ – it only boils down to condensing it well. This is precisely what spirituality is all about – manifesting the divinity within you as Vivekananda said. Inner Peace to World Peace is the current theme. After Vivekananda’s talk at the International Parliament of Religions, this is the first time, it is the biggest such event. The MoC is making a giant step forward. The unifying force is coming into effect from March 14. It is God’s will and the efforts of man that nothing is impossible and can help us achieve peace. India should be a shining star and the leading example of world spirituality.”

Rev. Daaji – Guide of Heartfulness and President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission said, “The whole idea began with Swami Vivekananda. He was my inspiration. All religions lead to one core. The time is ripe when we need to come together. How long shall we keep on dreaming/fighting on simple ideological differences and how do we bring about individual peace and harmony in the society? Terrorists are very well united. They share their knowledge of destructive powers. Spiritual and religious people are like oil and water which has to be discussed and very grateful to the MoC who are here to bring together the various paths. Let us change one person at a time, one heart at a time and make this unification a possibility. We must have respect with mutual trust and admiration. Spirituality is to bring people together. Our children and grandchildren should not witness the war that we are facing today. The ancient Yoga system is prescribed as vaccination for the whole problem. Among the 17 SDGs by the United Nations, you can fulfil them by solving the root problem – the mind through meditation and dhyana. Meditation gives you a focused and contemplative mind and true happiness. Our goal is to nurture the idea of coming together. Each of the spiritual heads here today represents a flower of the garland, we need to create that garland of flowers and dedicate it to God.”

Know the Steroid-induced Glaucoma: the silent thief of vision

Hyderabad, March 2024: L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is observing World Glaucoma Week (WGW) like every year, by organizing campaigns, talks, and interactive patient forums to raise public awareness about glaucoma for early detection and prevention. Glaucoma Awareness Walk, was organised by L V Prasad Eye Institute from its Banjara Hills campus to spread awareness about Glaucoma, today. Chief guest and Film actress and producer Ms Niharika Konidela flagged off the walk. She appreciated the efforts of the doctors and medical professionals at LV Prasad Eye Institute, who work tirelessly to ensure
everyone can access good eye care.

Glaucoma is an eye problem associated with increased eye pressure and is characterized by damage to the optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness. Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss. The global estimates predict that by 2040, the number of patients with glaucoma will rise from 76 million to 111.8 million, with a majority of these patients residing in Africa and Asia.

World Glaucoma Week (WGW) is a joint global initiative of the World Glaucoma Association
(WGA) and the World Glaucoma Patients Association (WGPA). This year, it is being observed from 10 to 16 March, focusing on Steroid-Induced Glaucoma.

Steroid-Induced Glaucoma: Understanding the Risks Steroids, commonly used in various medications to treat inflammation-related conditions such as asthma, arthritis, and eye allergies, can have detrimental effects on ocular health when misused. In particular, the prolonged use of steroids can lead to steroid-induced glaucoma, a condition that raises intraocular pressure and can result in irreversible vision loss.

“In a study published by LVPEI, out of 4062 children with ocular allergy, 2.2% had steroid- induced glaucoma, and more than 30% of these children were blind by the time they reached us. Most of these children were using steroids without any prescriptions or much beyond the time for which the original prescription was issued,” quoted Dr Siddharth Dikshit, Consultant Ophthalmologist at LVPEI, Hyderabad.

Steroids can be present in any medication, including eye drops, ointments, inhalers, tablets, and injections. Steroids are also found in many non-pharmaceutical products, legally and discreetly, without any documentation in creams for treatment of acne or itching and fairness creams. Some forms of medicines, which are not regulated, also add steroids in their formulations without permission or documentation.

How can steroids harm the eye?
Steroids, when misused, can have many adverse effects, mainly when used over a prolonged duration, repetitively, or in heavy doses. We will concentrate on the ocular effects of steroids. Steroids can cause cataracts—this happens more commonly with tablets—which can be treated with cataract surgery. Steroids also cause Glaucoma by raising the intraocular pressure, which, when uncontrolled, can cause irreversible visual loss.

Can steroids cause blindness?
Steroid-induced glaucoma can cause blindness. Unfortunately, children with eye allergies are most susceptible to this. Owing to the quick relief of red and itchy eyes, these steroids can be readily procured over the counter regularly, leading to unmonitored treatment. Additionally, unscrupulous, unregistered and quite often ignorant practitioners prescribing
steroids for nonspecific redness add to the problem.

Risk of developing Glaucoma?
In a limited study spread over 4 to 6 weeks, 5% of the population who didn’t have glaucoma developed raised intraocular pressure, which can cause glaucoma. The numbers are much more likely to be higher if the use of steroids is prolonged or repetitive. If you use steroids in any of the above forms, you must get a comprehensive eye examination. If someone develops glaucoma due to steroids, the physicians can suggest alternative medications in place of steroids along with the necessary treatment for glaucoma.

When asked what else can be done to mitigate the risk of steroid-induced Glaucoma, Dr Dikshit says, “We must ask our doctors if the prescription contains steroids, get an eye check-up done if the use is prolonged or repetitive, and use medications judiciously and only under medical supervision. People who are on prescribed steroids, such as eye drops,
inhalers, ointments, or tablets, should also get their eyes checked regularly.”

Musing of a Teenage Girl, a poetry book authored by a 14 years girl Sanjana Somavarapu released

Hyderabad, March 12, 2024…… Dr D. Nageshwar Rao, Founder Chairman AIG Hospital; BVR Mohan Reddy, Founder & Chairman, Cyient; K. Padmanabhaiah, Former Union Home Secretary and Chairman ASCI launched “Musing of a Teenage Girl”, a poetry book authored by 14 years girl, Sanjana Somavarapu on Sunday at a brief function held in The Jayabheri the peak, Kokapet.

Musing of a Teenage Girl, a poetry collection delves into the intricate depths of adolescent emotions, weaving poignant verses that explore themes of heartbreak, profound loss, and the myriad of experiences that resonate with the soul. Each poem is intricately crafted to evoke raw emotions and resonate with readers, inviting them to embark on a journey through the tumultuous landscape of teenage emotions.

A student at Oakridge School in the city Sanjana’s inspiration for writing the poetry and the book came from her grandfather Lt Gen (Retd) Hari Prasad.  The book is dedicated to her teacher Rosalind, who is also her inspiration and her grandfather. You have heavily inspired me from day one to start writing poems, the teenager wrote in the opening pages of the book

Addressing the 100-plus gathering, the Chief Guest Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, who is also a family friend said, it is unbelievable that a teenager writes such poetry.  I am not a poetic person nor do I have an interest in such things. But, having accepted to grace the occasion I read all the poems while I was flying back to Hyderabad to this function.

Dr Nageshwar Reddy cited a poem titled The Art of Noticing

I see beauty in everything,
even in tiny ants crawling in the dirt,
the pimples on my skin,
and the dying plants on my balcony.
I find everything quite pretty.
Sure, some things might surprise me, but in the little details,

everything is unique.
It’s like a painting-you can’t see the whole picture until you look at it up close.
I’ve learned that God made this entire planet and shaped us perfectly;
So, why not accept every bit of ourselves and the life we were
given and live fully? We only live once, after all… and said the poetry in the book is very much moving.

Referring to another poem where the author talked about her public speaking inhibitions, Dr Reddy said that she doesn’t look like having any such stage fright. Every single poem is fantastic. I just kept reading all her poems repeatedly he said and wished her all the best in her endeavor.

BVR Mohan Reddy who again is a family friend said it is rare for a teenager of 14 to become an author. I have gone through all 28 poems, which have deep meaning and long-lasting messages and impressions. They all are thought-provoking. The poetry reflects what kind of person Sanjana is.

Padmanabhaiah, Former Union Home Secretary and Chairman of ASCI said I am an outsider unlike the other speakers who spoke before me and had the privilege of being a family friend, I will give you my outsider’s view. The poetry in the book has a universal appeal. The author seems to have a good command of the language. The title is very apt. The cause for which she is working is great and he wished her a great literary journey ahead in her life.

Sanjana who gave a brief introduction about her book said that she loves theatre, singing, and reading books among others. I was never so keen on poetry. But when I got involved in a school’s community project and subsequently my grandfather’s suggestion, I began my journey which I enjoy immensely now.

Daughter of Rekha and Sashi, it is her maiden book. She wants to spend all the proceeds from the book on setting up a library in a government school.
