Glenmark and IADVL Release

Bangalore,28th August 2023 Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Glenmark), a research-led, integrated, global pharmaceutical company, has joined forces with The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists (IADVL) to unveil a special commemorative postal stamp aimed at raising awareness and support for individuals living with vitiligo, a skin disorder that affects pigmentation.

Vitiligo, a condition characterized by the loss of skin pigmentation due to the malfunction or destruction of melanin-producing cells, impacts not only physical appearance but also psychological well-being. Despite its prevalence and impact, vitiligo often remains misunderstood, leading to societal stigmatization and prejudice. India is home to the highest rate of vitiligo cases globally, with one in ten individuals being affected by the condition.

In an effort to combat misinformation and promote acceptance, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals and IADVL conducted a unique painting competition named “Power of Paint and Brush” on World Vitiligo Day, June 25, 2023. The competition aimed to spotlight the significance of awareness, understanding, and treatment for vitiligo patients. Dermatologists from across the country participated, submitting over 100 entries that creatively portrayed the journey of patients with vitiligo and advocated for the importance of embracing diversity.

Dr. Naushin Ara from Jaipur SMS Medical College crafted the winning painting, titled “Colour of Thoughts.” The winning artwork has been transformed into a captivating commemorative postal stamp that will serve as a constant reminder of the significance of empathy, acceptance, and respect for those affected by vitiligo.

Alok Malik, President and Business Head, India Formulations, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. said, “This initiative echoes Glenmark’s core commitment to inclusivity and positive influence. Beyond medicines, we believe in shaping a better society through collaborations that enhance medical education and well-being. This collaboration underscores our steadfast dedication to fostering empathy and harmony, reaffirming our pledge to create a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

IADVL spokesperson XX said, “We believe in the power of collective efforts to create awareness and acceptance. This commemorative stamp is a small but impactful step towards supporting vitiligo patients and promoting a more inclusive society.”

“As partners in delivering meaningful messages, we are proud to contribute to this event that fosters awareness and compassion. This commemorative stamp carries the spirit of unity and education for vitiligo support, reflecting our dedication to impactful initiatives,” said xx from Indian Postal Services.

A panel of judges, including Mr. Uday Parker, a Gold Medalist from JJ School of Arts, and key representatives from IADVL, meticulously reviewed the submissions to select the winning piece.

In line with International Year of Millets 2023, Eat Right Millet Walkathon 2023 was aimed at spreading awareness about safe eating habits and motivate the public to include millet in their dietary regimen to reap its multiple nutritional benefits.

The walkathon was inaugurated by Ms. Innoshi Sharma IRS, the Executive Director of FSSAI, in the presence of other distinguished dignitaries like Sh. S. Sharad Rao IAS, Joint Director of the FSSAI, Delhi, Dr. Sushma, Director of Telangana Food Processing Society, Industry and Commerce Department, Govt. of Telangana.

The event also featured engaging activities such as Zumba and aerobic sessions, as well as exciting games, to make learning about nutrition enjoyable and interactive.

Millets, once a staple food, are making a comeback as a healthy and nutritious staple food. The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). IYM2023 is an opportunity to raise awareness of the nutritional and health benefits of millets, and to advocate for policies that support the cultivation of millets under adverse and changing climatic conditions.

Odisha Student Entrepreneur’s Startup on Clean Cooking Equipment Wins GITAM SmartIDEAthon 2023

Odisha Student Entrepreneur's

Hyderabad/India, 26th Aug 2023: In an exhilarating grand finale of the SmartIDEAthon 2023 — an annual pan-India mega pitch-fest organized by GITAM (Deemed to be University) — a promising young entrepreneur Anup Paikaray bagged the winner’s title, a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a fully sponsored trip to Boston. Presenting to an eminent jury of experts in Hyderabad, this student of the Odisha University of Technology and Research from Odisha made a winning pitch for his startup Newrup Tech Solutions, which develops heat-powered air blowers to harness excess heat from Chulas or Tandoors, converting it into rotational energy for an internal fan, at just Rs 500. It thereby seeks to impact the lives of over two billion women still cooking on traditional chulhas/mud stoves worldwide.

Handing over the coveted title was the event’s Chief Guest and India’s gifted space entrepreneur Pawan Kumar Chandana. Addressing a vivacious gathering of student entrepreneurs just days after the momentous Chandrayaan 3 landing, the Skyroot Aerospace co-founder and ex-ISRO scientist said, “Entrepreneurship gives immense satisfaction and helps create impact and employment. A career in space tech is a very rewarding and satisfying experience for every engineer. Space can sustain trillions of people because of the resources. It is an exciting future for all of humanity.” Speaking on the future of Skyroot — the first private company in India to launch a rocket into space — Chandana said, “This year, we are targeting our next rocket which is a 7-storied building rocket capable of launching multiple satellites into orbit. Skyroot’s mission is to open space for everybody.”

Fostering a deep connection to India’s vibrant startup ecosystem, the national-level competition invited undergraduate and postgraduate student innovators and ideation-level ventures to pitch ideas for sustainable and resilient community building, across four themes: Food and health, Toys for STEM, Sustainable Fashion and Frugal Innovation. Krish Nangegadda, Chief Innovation Officer, GITAM (Deemed to be University) said, “Entrepreneurship education gives you skills that you can use anywhere. SmartIDEAthon endeavors to promote this year’s themes through collaboration and networking among young minds.”

Sribharat Mathukumilli, President of GITAM (Deemed to be) University, said, “Students should start thinking critically and asking questions. Look at all of the problems around you and see if you can solve them. If you can find solutions to problems and are willing to, able to find customers who pay for your services, that is a startup. That’s our takeaway from SmartIDEAthon 2023.”

Shortlisted from over 1000 pan-India entries, the finalists refined their pitches in a series of advanced boot camps and personalized mentoring by internationally trained venture coaches. The finale took place in person at GITAM’s Hyderabad campus on August 25, 2023.

New Delhi,26th August 2023 Check Point Research (CPR), the Threat Intelligence arm of Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading provider of cyber security solutions globally,

has unveiled its 2023 Mid-Year Security Report. The report uncovers an unsettling 8% surge in global weekly cyberattacks in the second quarter, the most significant increase in two years, highlighting how attackers have cunningly combined next-gen AI technologies with long-established tools like USB devices to conduct disruptive cyberattacks. The report also showcases how ransomware attacks have escalated in the first half of the year with new ransomware groups coming into the scene. Here in India, the average number of attacks per organization reached 2152 attacks in H1 2023, reflecting a significant YoY increase of 20%.

From the triple extortion attack on the University of Manchester to the rise of new group Anonymous Sudan targeting western organizations, the 2023 Mid-Year Security Report uncovers the trends and behaviors that have defined the year so far.

Key insights from the 2023 Mid-Year Security Report include:

  • Ransomware groups have stepped up their game, exploiting vulnerabilities in commonly used corporate software and shifting their approach from data encryption to data theft.
  • USB Devices have resurfaced as significant threats, with both state-affiliated groups and cybercriminals deploying USB drives as vectors for infecting organizations globally.
  • Hacktivism has seen a rise, with politically motivated groups launching attacks on selected targets.
  • Artificial Intelligence misuse has amplified, with generative AI tools being used to craft phishing emails, keystroke monitoring malware, and basic ransomware code, calling for stronger regulatory measures.

In H1 2023, 48 ransomware groups have breached over 2,200 victims, with Lockbit3 being the most active, reporting a 20% increase in victims compared to H1 2022. The emergence of new groups like Royal and Play is associated with the termination of Hive and Conti Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) groups. In terms of geography, 45% of victims are in the US, with an unexpected rise in Russian entities due to the novel actor “MalasLocker”, which substitutes ransom demands with charitable donations. The manufacturing and retail sectors have seen the most victims, suggesting a shift in ransomware attack strategy.

“Criminal activities have continued to rise in the first half of the year, with an 8% surge in global weekly cyberattacks in the second quarter marking the highest volume in two years. Familiar threats such as ransomware and hacktivism have evolved further, with threat groups modifying their methods and tools to infect and affect organizations worldwide. Even legacy technology such as USB storage devices, which have long been gathering dust in desk drawers, have gained popularity as a malware messenger.” said Maya Horowitz, VP Research at Check Point Software.

“Organizations need to build a cyber resiliency strategy and strengthen their defenses by adopting a prevention-first, integrated approach to cyber security. Cyberattacks are inevitable but can be largely prevented by proactive measures and the right security technologies”.

The 2023 Mid-Year Security Report provides a comprehensive account of the cyber-threat landscape. The findings are based on data drawn from the Check Point ThreatCloud Cyber-Threat Map which looks at the key tactics’ cybercriminals are using to carry out their attacks.
