International Day of Women in Mining: Vedanta celebrates India’s largest cohort of Women in Mining

New Delhi, 16th June 2025: On the International Day of Women in Mining, Vedanta Limited (NSE: VEDL) celebrated India’s largest cohort of women in underground mining. Vedanta and Hindustan Zinc were the first in India to induct women in underground mining in 2019. Over 550 women work in core mining operations across the company’s various businesses. India’s leading energy transition metals, critical minerals, energy & technology conglomerate, Vedanta is spearheading gender inclusivity across its operations in the country. With over 22% gender diversity, Vedanta’s workforce includes more than 3,000 women employees who are making significant contributions to the sector. This is a substantial representation of women in the metals & mining sector when compared to Vedanta’s domestic peers.

The natural resources sector has historically faced glaring under-representation of women in its workforce. However, Vedanta has achieved many firsts in this sector such as the country’s first underground women miners and all-women underground mine rescue teams at Hindustan Zinc. Also, Hindustan Zinc has the distinction of having three all-women underground mine rescue teams, the highest in India. In addition to mining, the company has a high representation of women in core metal production operations as well. For instance, the company has an all-women aluminium production line (potline) and an all-women locomotive operations unit.

This has been possible due to Vedanta’s commitment to providing rich job content powered by a tech-first approach through Industry 4.0, robotics and automation that have standardized work processes and eliminated manual intervention associated with this sector. The company provides differentiated career enhancement opportunities in this high-growth sector with the global boom in critical minerals and energy transition metals.

Vedanta is actively bridging the skill gap within this sector by offering exciting career options irrespective of gender. Along with that, Vedanta operates digital mines, featuring surface-based underground mining (tele-remote) operations, drone-based surveillance, real-time analytics, and automation, which have led to a significant rise in the number of women professionals choosing careers at Vedanta in mining.

Speaking on the occasion, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director – Vedanta Ltd & Chairperson – Hindustan Zinc Ltd, said, “At Vedanta, we are deeply committed to creating an inclusive workplace that ensures equal opportunity for all. Women-led development is now central to sustainable growth in India, and we are dedicated to advancing this cause. Metals & mining is going to be intrinsic to a low-carbon future, and we need to bridge the skill gap in this sector. From India’s first unground women miners to India’s first women rescue team – the women at Vedanta are breaking the glass ceiling.  Through progressive policies we hope to leverage and empower this talent pool of women. We are building a future where diversity fuels innovation, inclusion accelerates progress, and every individual is empowered to make a meaningful, lasting impact.”

In the early 20th century, women working in metals and mining were a common sight. However, the Indian Mining Act of 1923 restricted their entry into underground mines, and a complete ban was imposed in 1937 under British rule. Although the restriction was briefly lifted from 1943 to 1946 – allowing nearly 70,000 women to work underground – the perception of metals & mining as an unsuitable profession for women persisted for over 80 years. It was only in 2019, after a petition by a group of seven mining engineering students, that the Indian government finally lifted the ban and Vedanta’s Hindustan Zinc swiftly emerged as the first company ever to deploy women mine engineers in their underground mines.

Sharing her thoughts, Yogeshwari Rane, India’s first woman to clear the first-class examination in both underground and opencast mining, currently working at the company’s Iron Ore mine in Goa, said, “Coming from the mining rich area of Goa, I was always fascinated with this field. And with Vedanta’s pool of opportunities, I got a chance to explore this field fully beyond textbooks. I’ve had a chance to work in both the underground and opencast mines with multiple growth prospects within this field. From the Zawar Group of Mines in Rajasthan, Sandhya Rasakatla, India’s first underground woman mine manager, shared her journey: “I was always fascinated with the world of metals and mining. It is a proud feeling to be here because, as a woman, I was the first in the mining industry to get this exposure. Moreover, working with the same opportunities as our male counterparts in an environment ready to adapt, learn, and aid personal and professional development adds to it.”

Vedanta offers a comprehensive suite of supportive workplace policies, including a spouse hiring policy, a year-long sabbatical for childcare, and ‘No-Questions Asked’ leave policy prioritizing mental and physical health. Beyond policies, employees live in world-class townships offering all modern amenities in proximity to the plants. These include schools, hospitals, daycare centres, creches, places of worship, sports and recreational facilities like swimming pools, golf courses, and movie theatres, which foster vibrant social life.

Vedanta Limited is a global leader in critical minerals, energy and technology operating a diverse portfolio of world-class assets. It is the world’s largest integrated producer of zinc, the fourth-largest global producer of silver, amongst the world’s top aluminium producers, India’s only private oil and gas producer, and one of its largest private power producers. With an eye on the future, the company is strategically expanding its business portfolio by venturing into rare earths, other critical minerals, and renewable energy.

Influencers, short-form videos, and messaging are disrupting how offline retailers sell and scale in India

National, 16 June 2025: With social media increasingly playing an important role in guiding purchase decisions, Meta has unveiled key consumer insights from a study on the Retail industry. The Meta-commissioned study by GWI highlights how consumers are increasingly seeking online experiences even in offline purchases, how they are discovering new products and brands online, and relying on online touchpoints such as influencers, short-form video content, and messaging to determine their shopping experience and purchase decisions.

According to the study, which was done with 2,548 internet users aged 16-64 across India, nearly 8 in 10 shoppers discover new products through social media, with 96% of these discoveries happening on Meta platforms, underscoring the role of Facebook and Instagram in today’s retail landscape. The influence is so significant that even in-store shoppers are increasingly relying more on online and particularly Meta platforms for discovery and research than just on physical retail displays.

“Indian shoppers today are social-first, mobile-first, and video-first irrespective of whether the purchase happens offline or online” said Meghna Apparao, Director, E-commerce and Retail at Meta in India, “With consumers increasingly relying on Reels, messaging, and influencer content to discover and evaluate products, offline retailers have an opportunity to reach their customers across multiple touch points simultaneously and harness the power of our platforms to build unique online and phygital experiences that also move metrics across the funnel.”

The study highlights the powerful impact of video content on purchase behavior. Two to three-minute videos and Reels on Meta platforms are proving highly effective, with nearly a third of surveyed viewers purchasing products featured in the brand videos. This trend is particularly prominent in luxury categories, where visual storytelling through short-form content significantly influences buying decisions.

Influencer marketing has emerged as a key driver of retail action across India. The study found that 6 in 10 shoppers follow national influencers, with this category of content creators having the biggest impact on both product discovery and purchase decisions. National influencer recommendations are driving sales both online and in physical stores, demonstrating the cross-channel influence of social media personalities.

Meta’s messaging platform WhatsApp is also playing a crucial role in the purchase journey. Nearly 60% of users are likely to buy a product after seeing an offer on WhatsApp, highlighting how business messaging leads to tangible retail action and drives store visits.

In line with these consumer shifts, Meta recently also announced new omnichannel advertising capabilities that help brands better connect the dots between online engagement and in-store actions. These solutions enable retailers to optimize campaigns for real-world outcomes such as store visits and in-store sales by integrating Meta’s performance tools across both digital and physical customer journeys.

Said Pelki Tshering, Chief Marketing Officer, Tanishq, We’ve always believed in meeting our customers where they are — both online and offline. Meta’s solutions like Click to WhatsApp (CTWA) have helped us in that journey. By combining conversational commerce with tailored messaging, we’ve seen over 14x offline ROAS. What’s even more exciting is the potential of Meta’s omnichannel ads — allowing us to drive both online and in-store sales through a single, unified campaign. As one of the first to test the solution with offline CAPI, we’re seeing a 40% jump in ROAS for online purchases and an improvement in offline purchases. Meta’s retail solutions are helping us not just drive omni sales — but truly connect with our customers, wherever they are in their buying journey.”

Said Aishwarya Omprakash, Head of Marketing, Taneira, “In our pilot campaign utilizing Meta’s omnichannel ads, we observed a significant boost in performance, achieving 3.5x higher purchase conversions and 4.3x higher Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) compared to campaigns optimized solely for purchases. This encouraging outcome reinforces the value of a multi-touchpoint strategy, and we’re excited to take this experiment further in the coming year.”

Zeeba Basmati Rice celebrates Father’s Day with a beautiful film titled “Tell Your Dad, I love You”

This Father’s Day, Zeeba Basmati Rice, a premium basmati brand from the house of Supple Tek, Zeeba aims to spark heartfelt conversations & realizations about the role Fathers play in our everyday life. Conceptualised and executed by Maximus Collabs, the film aims to evoke an emotion and open up difficult yet beautiful conversations.

The campaign strikes a powerful emotional chord, sparking meaningful conversations around the often-unspoken love and gratitude we feel for our fathers. It will serve as a bridge across the emotional gap that many of us experience when trying to express affection, reminding people that showing love, even if it feels awkward, is always worthwhile.

While we all adore our fathers, we often take their silent presence and everyday sacrifices for granted. This campaign will bring that truth into sharp focus. It will encourage people to pause, reflect, and appreciate the unwavering support, guidance, and strength that fathers provide, often without seeking recognition.

Through this film, we aim to push those quiet emotions into the spotlight to move people to pick up the phone, call their dads, and say what they’ve perhaps never said out loud: “Thank you dad , I love you, and I see everything you’ve done for me.

Skilling for Viksit Bharat@2047: A Paradigm Shift Needed

By Prof PB Sharma and Sanskrit Sharma

As India moves forward on the pathways of rapid track sustainable development as the largest democracy of the world, it needs to effectively capitalise its “Advantage India” that lies in its over 660 million youth between the age group of 15-29 years. It is this vast pool of Young India that needs both the technology skills as well as the character skills of integrity, responsibility, and accountability akin to the clarion calls of Viksit Bharat of our dreams.

Skilling Youth with AI and Digital Skills:

Young India needs to be empowered with digital skills in a hyper-connected world, of which India is one of the most promising leaders in the age of Artificial Intelligence, AI. These AI and Digital skills are required all across the board for all sectors of the economy.

New Skill Infrastructure Urgently Needed:

The current level of skilling infrastructure and the skilling ecosystem in India requires a paradigm shift both in respect of content as well as in the delivery systems being adopted at present.

The mass scale skilling by organising workshops or seminars or even skill camps is no answer to the skilling needs of AI and digital skills, nor is a solution to seriously align the conduct and character of Young India to the needs of integrity, responsibility and sustainability, the ‘holy trinity’ of the New Age.

Skill Universities need a Redesign:

The initiative of the state governments in India to establish skill universities in public and private domains, though sounds good at the first instant, may end up with unemployable skill degree holders unless these skill universities change their approach of imparting skills to the inspired young minds who come to these skill universities to get the experience and exposure to the hi-tech digital skills and their practice for the most modern manufacturing and service applications.

The design and delivery system for skill programs must necessarily differ from the traditional knowledge-based degree programs of today’s forward-looking universities and institutions of higher learning.

Future Readiness to be the Mantra:

The primary goal of a Skill University should be to produce graduates who are immediately employable, job-ready, and possess the higher-end digital skills so much needed in the workplace today by employers. These universities should necessarily emphasize fostering internships in industry, on learning by doing, and activity-based learning a lot more than ‘learning to know’ and know deeply, as the conventional universities usually are accustomed to providing.

The outcome of a skill university has to necessarily be a ready-to-run a kind of industry or service sector workforce that not only has the skills of today but is also capable of self-empowerment with the skill sets of the future in the industry or a service organisation.

Catch them Young from School Onward:

Ideally, the interest in skills of the new age should be cultivated from the school level onward. There was a time when India had technical schools which focused at that time on skill-based learning of engineering and technology. These students, after passing their technical schools, became highly successful engineering and technology graduates once they joined their degree programs.

Skilling Youth Should Be a National Priority:

Today, when we are in an era that requires competency, calibre and character to work alongside smart and intelligent machines, robots and humanoids, the importance of skilling  Young India cannot be overemphasised.

It would be highly desirable for the universities and colleges in India to establish multifunctional, multi-sectoral skill centres and high-tech skill towers to empower the youth of India with skill sets for the future-ready workforce that the Viskit Bharat@2047 mission so well requires.

World Youth Skills Day 2025:

The UN  World Youth Skills Day 2025,  celebrated throughout the world each year on July 15, has given a call to “Youth empowerment through AI and Digital Skills” as its theme for this year. This is in line with the needs of Industry 4.0 and Service Sector 5.0 that require empowerment of youth with next-generation AI and digital skills embedded with the character skills of sustainability, integrity, and responsibility that the new age so much requires to create a green and blissful future for the world community.

Let skilling Youth be a matter of great national priority and let India take a lead in redesigning it’s skill infrastructure for the New Age learners.

She Raised Me Too: Arjun & Myra Rampal Celebrate Fatherhood with Natural Diamonds

India, 13 June 2025 – This Father’s Day, De Beers Group, the world’s leading diamond company, brings to light the evolving dynamics of the father-daughter bond through a heartfelt moment shared between Arjun Rampal and his daughter Myra Rampal — celebrating not only the love between parent and child, but the personal milestones they grow through together.

In a warm, candid visual, Myra is seen wearing a natural diamond solitaire in her second ear piercing, symbolising a new-age ritual of self-expression and independence — one that her father encouraged and embraced. For both, it marked a moment of trust, mutual respect, and evolving roles.

“She’s always been her own person,” shares Arjun Rampal. “But what’s beautiful is how she lets me be part of her journey — not just as a dad, but as a friend, a student, and sometimes, a little lost until she shows me the way.”

This intimate portrayal highlights how the second ear piercing, once considered a symbol of youthful rebellion, is now a meaningful expression of individuality — often supported and celebrated by fathers who understand that love also means letting go, listening, and learning.

“My second piercing was something I chose for myself,” says Myra. “But it meant so much more when Dad stood by me. It became our moment — a memory I’ll always treasure.”

To capture this dynamic in a modern, light-hearted way, Arjun and Myra have created a delightful reel on Instagram titled “Raising Dads”, where the two playfully explore how daughters shape their fathers — from knowing the top three shades of nude lipstick to understanding the unspoken signs of needing space. The reel beautifully balances humour and emotion, culminating in a tender moment where Arjun gifts Myra natural diamonds for her second ear piercing. You can watch it on @HeeraHaiSadaKeLiye on Sunday, 15th June 2025.

De Beers Group has long stood for timeless elegance, but it also honours personal stories — of legacy, expression, and moments that define us. Because when the bond is this real, love is so natural that only a natural diamond will do.

This Father’s Day, celebrate the quiet beauty of growing together — with shared laughter, sparkle and love that evolves with time.
