Myopia on the rise among school children in India; Doctors urge screen time management and early intervention

Bengaluru, 27 May 2025: Myopia, or nearsightedness, is rising as a common vision concern among children with around 23% of the school-going children in India being affected, and is expected to reach 53% by 2050, according to Association of Community Ophthalmologists of India (ACOIN). As Myopia Awareness Week is observed, ophthalmologists say that many children do not realize they have a vision problem, and parents often find out only when their child starts having trouble in their eye sight in school.

Myopia among children is higher in urban areas. For instance, according to an RGUHS Journal study, 4.71% of the children from urban areas in Bengaluru being affected, compared to 3.18% in rural areas. The chances of getting myopia increase with age — about 13% of children aged 5–8 years were affected, while over 40% of those aged 9–15 years had the condition.

Doctors believe this increase is linked to more screen time and less outdoor play. A recent study published in Jama Network, found that spending even one extra hour per day on smartphones or tablets can raise the risk of myopia by 21%. This highlights the need to monitor children’s digital screen use closely.

Dr. Savitha Arun, Director, Medical Superintendent, Quality Assurance Coordinator and Senior Consultant – Anterior Segment & Electrophysiology, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, explains, “We see a significant number of children presenting with undiagnosed vision problems each month — on average, over 100 new patients and around 250 follow-up cases are brought in for complaints related to poor eyesight during the holiday season. Many of these cases turn out to be myopia, which could have been detected much earlier. Often, parents notice signs only when their child starts sitting too close to the television, holds books too near, or complains about not being able to see the board at school. We have observed a steady rise in such cases every month, particularly after extended school holidays or exam seasons, when screen exposure tends to peak.”

One of the key concerns is that myopia often develops silently, with children adapting to reduced vision without realizing it. Blurred distance vision, frequent eye rubbing, or sitting too close to screens or difficulty in reading often go unnoticed, which results in delayed diagnosis.

“Early detection and regular vision screenings are necessary to managing myopia effectively and preventing long-term complications such as high myopia, retinal degeneration, or other vision-threatening conditions. It is recommended for children to undergo comprehensive eye exams at least once a year, particularly between the ages of 5 and 15, when the eyes are still developing and more responsive to corrective measures. In around 35-40% cases, the myopia would have progressed to moderate or high levels by the time their parents take them to us for checkup. Early intervention through spectacles, lifestyle changes like increased outdoor activity, and advanced treatment options can help control progression in children at an early stage,” adds Dr. Savitha Arun.

Myopia Awareness Week is observed annually to raise awareness about this growing epidemic. The theme for this year, ‘Screens Down, Eyes Up’, calls for immediate steps to prevent vision loss among the children by managing screen time and encouraging more time outdoors to help prevent and control myopia progression. Hence, awareness among the parents, educators, and pediatricians all play a crucial role in early detection and diagnosis.

AI Adoption Soars in APAC Amid Trust and Job Security Concerns

INDIA, MAY 27 2025 – A new study by F5 , which explored the perceptions and attitudes APAC consumers have about AI. Consumers across APAC are facing an AI paradox: where the technology is embraced for productivity and efficiency, but fears around privacy risks, fraud, and employment impact hindering widespread trust.

Titled The 2025 AI Paradox: Understanding Consumer Perceptions in APAC, the research identified five key paradoxes influencing consumer trust in AI across nine APAC countries:

  • Empowerment vs. Control: Consumers are excited about AI’s potential but demand transparency and governance to feel in control of their data and experiences.
  • Tech Savviness vs. Skepticism: Despite high levels of tech adoption, consumers remain skeptical about AI’s reliability and ethical implications.
  • Efficiency vs. Job Security: While AI promises increased efficiency, anxieties about job displacement are prevalent.
  • Innovation vs. Environmental Concerns: Consumers recognize AI’s innovative potential but are concerned about its environmental impact.
  • Progress vs. Responsibility: Consumers expect organizations to adopt AI responsibly, prioritizing fairness, security, and accountability.

“This research highlights a clear gap in trust when it comes to AI adoption in APAC. Consumers recognize AI’s benefits but remain cautious about security risks, ethical use, and its long-term impact on jobs and society. Organizations must proactively address these concerns by embedding transparency, governance, and security into every AI-driven experience. Without trust, AI adoption will stall, limiting its potential to drive innovation and efficiency,” said Mohan Veloo, CTO for APCJ at F5.

The study also revealed a disconnect between personal and professional AI experiences. While many individuals experience productivity gains from AI in their personal lives, these benefits are not being fully realized in the workplace. This suggests a need for organizations to focus on better integrating AI into workflows and providing employees with the training and resources they need to use AI effectively in their jobs.

“The National Strategy for AI envisions India as a global AI leader with initiatives like the IndiaAI Mission and Aatmanirbhar Bharat driving self-reliance, ethical innovation, and inclusive growth,” said Pratik Shah, Managing Director for India & SAARC at F5. “With the widespread adoption of AI solutions across industries, our study highlights concern around bias, transparency, and data privacy that continue to erode consumer trust. Moreover, businesses often struggle aligning AI with real customer needs, constrained by fragmented data and overdependence on automation. Bridging these gaps through responsible leadership, integrated digital infrastructure, and human-centered design will be critical for unlocking AI’s full potential, not just as a driver of efficiency, but as a force for trusted, long-term transformation.”

Key findings from the report include:

  • Strong AI familiarity across Asia: AI awareness is high across all markets, with familiarity exceeding 89% and surpassing 90% in most regions. While China leads at 98%,  India ranks the lowest with awareness level at 90%, despite its rapidly evolving digital ecosystem.
  • Enterprises are not yet unlocking AI’s full potential in the workplace: While 73% of consumers report increased personal productivity with AI, for India 84% professionals are seeing significant personal and professional productivity gains, indicating stronger
  • integration. Additionally, the professional landscape shows much lower gains, with 52% reporting no noticeable change in workplace efficiency. However, the report revealed that AI delivers the greatest productivity gains with consistent use—46.2% of professionals who use AI daily report significant improvements, highlighting the power of continuous interaction. Organizations must bridge this gap through better AI integration, training, and workflow design.
  • Rising trust concerns amid security risks: APAC has become a hotspot for fraud, with fraud rates having spiked significantly in Singapore (+207%), Thailand (+206%), and Indonesia (+201%) in 2024. In particular, AI-driven fraud is weakening consumer trust across the region; APAC saw a 194% increase in deepfake fraud and a 121% increase in identity fraud in 2024. As AI adoption grows, organizations must navigate the challenge of implementing robust security measures to build consumer trust while scaling AI solutions responsibly.
  • Job displacement concerns hinder AI acceptance, but vary across APAC: In APAC, concerns about losing one’s job to automation are hindering consumers’ acceptance of AI in the workplace. However, concerns about AI-driven job losses differ markedly across the region. India and Singapore show the highest levels of concern, with 97% of consumers in both markets being slightly to very concerned about AI displacing their jobs. This is in contrast with Japan, where attitudes are much more relaxed—only 57% of Japanese consumers are slightly concerned, and 30% are not concerned at all.
  • AI excels in speed, but trust still needs the human touch: APAC consumers recognize the efficiency gains that AI brings, with nearly half of consumers preferring AI for efficiency-driven tasks like customer support (47.9%) and personal shopping (45.6%). APAC consumers also have confidence in AI-powered insights, turning to AI for data-driven decisions in healthcare (40.1%) and financial advice (39.2%). However, AI falls short when it comes to emotional and sensory experiences; APAC consumers still prefer human interaction in food preparation (32.2%) and emotional support (26.6%), where empathy and personal touch matter.
  • AI’s environmental footprint raises sustainability concerns: AI’s rapid surge brings a pressing challenge—the need to balance innovation with AI’s growing energy demands. Growing AI adoption is projected to cause APAC’s data center capacity to more than double by 2028. As such, majorityof APAC consumers (53.8%) believe that while AI’s advantages are undeniable, efforts must be made to reduce its resource consumption. As a testimony to AI’s growth to drive innovation and rising energy demands, India leads with ~950MW capacity, followed by Japan (892MW), Australia (773MW), Singapore (718MW), and Korea (531MW). APAC organizations need to ensure that AI evolves responsibly, highlighting the region’s growing need for energy-efficient AI models, sustainable computing infrastructure, and greener data centers.

Methodology

Twimbit conducted research on behalf of F5 in 2025 to evaluate consumer perceptions and attitudes about AI in APAC. 900 respondents were surveyed across nine key markets: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Exposed and Exploited: The Growing Danger of Edge Device Attacks in India’s Critical Systems

The Rising Threat of Exploited Edge Devices in Cyber Security

As India rapidly digitizes across sectors, edge devices such as routers, firewalls, and VPNs are emerging as prime targets for sophisticated cyberattacks in 2025.

Both financially motivated criminals and state-sponsored actors from neighboring countries are increasingly exploiting vulnerabilities in these devices to gain covert access to critical government, defense, and industrial networks. Attacks like multi-stage malware campaigns, botnets, and large-scale DDoS assaults are compromising India’s IT and OT infrastructure, raising significant concerns for sectors including education, healthcare, and finance.

These devices are commonly repurposed for creating Operational Relay Boxes (ORBs), a type of infrastructure used by cyber criminals to anonymize and relay communications. The rise of Operational Relay Boxes (ORBs) adds a new layer of complexity and opportunity: these intelligent gateways act as both control points and communication bridges between operational technology (OT) and IT networks. While ORBs enhance edge intelligence and real-time decision-making, they also become critical choke points. A compromised ORB could act as a launchpad for lateral movement, data exfiltration, or even operational sabotage.

By compromising these devices, attackers can establish covert communication channels that evade detection, enabling them to infiltrate further into networks. And over the past year, both cyber criminals and state-sponsored actors have dramatically increased their focus on exploiting edge devices as an initial access vector. The issue has become so severe that Check Point Research pointed to the security risks that arise from edge devices as one of five significant cyber security trends to monitor for this year.

Why Edge Devices are Now Being Targeted

Edge devices have become a more attractive target for cyber attacks because they play a critical role in a network’s flow, making them difficult to patch without causing very noticeable operational disruptions. Vulnerabilities found in devices like Ivanti Connect Secure and Both state-sponsored actors and ransomware groups took advantage of these vulnerabilities to compromise corporate networks and gain access to sensitive environments. And because patching these devices often leads to service downtime, potentially impeding business operations, organizations must balance the need to secure their systems with the risk of disrupting vital services.

The exploitation of these edge devices isn’t limited to just zero-day vulnerabilities. Magnet Goblin, which emerged in 2024, focuses on exploiting newly disclosed vulnerabilities in popular edge devices like Ivanti Connect Secure VPNs. They leverage tools like NerbianRAT—a cross-platform remote access Trojan (RAT)—to gain access to networks and deploy custom malware. Magnet Goblin’s swift exploitation of vulnerabilities in widely used devices highlights a concerning trend where cyber criminals are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure components to access sensitive data.

There’s also the risk of “smart” edge which features ORBs that not only aggregate and preprocess telemetry but also enforce policy, orchestrate workflows, and bridge the gap between OT and IT. Yet this very intelligence makes ORBs irresistible targets; a single compromised relay box could allow adversaries to silently manipulate sensor readings, disrupt critical processes, or pivot into core networks, all under the guise of routine edge communications. As we hurry to tap into IoT’s data and automation, we need to face one clear fact: our smart edge devices are only as safe as the relay points we set up—and the next wave of cyber threats is already hiding around the edges of our connected world.

The Continued Role of State-Sponsored Attacks

While financially motivated actors are rapidly exploiting edge devices, state-sponsored threat groups are also targeting these vulnerabilities – and doing so with a high level of sophistication. Cisco’s Adaptive Security Appliances (ASA) were targeted in a campaign known as ArcaneDoor. This operation, executed by nation-state actors, exploited weaknesses in ASA devices, allowing the attackers to infiltrate government and industrial networks. Once inside, they could exfiltrate sensitive data and establish long-term espionage capabilities, all while maintaining a covert presence.

In 2025, India faces escalating cyber threats from state-sponsored hackers targeting its critical sectors amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. China-backed groups continue cyber espionage linked to border disputes, while Pakistan-based actors ramp up sophisticated attacks on government, defense, and aerospace domains. These attacks, involving distributed denial-of-service (DDoS), web defacements, and data breaches, are expected to intensify across industries such as education, healthcare, and finance. In response, India is significantly boosting cybersecurity investments, with its market projected to more than double by 2030, reflecting growing efforts to safeguard national and economic security.

The Threat of Botnets and DDoS Attacks

A research report has highlighted that India faced an alarming 3000% rise in API-targeted Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks in just three months. The report documents over 1.2 billion attacks that include 271 million API attacks last quarter. Unlike traditional attacks that flood websites with traffic, these sophisticated breaches exploit the very mechanisms that make APIs efficient. While sophisticated backdoors and custom implants dominate discussions around edge device exploitation, more traditional threats remain prevalent. In September 2024, CloudFlare mitigated what was described as the largest DDoS attack in history. The attack, originating from compromised edge devices like MikroTik routers, DVRs, and web servers, involved an extraordinarily high packet rate. Many of these compromised devices were likely exploited using critical vulnerabilities, with ASUS home routers accounting for a large portion of the attack. This campaign, which has not been attributed to any specific state-sponsored actor or cybercriminal group, demonstrates the scale and impact that compromised edge devices can have.

In 2024, botnets created from unsecured and vulnerable edge devices became indispensable tools for advanced threat actors. These botnets, like Raptor Train and Faceless, use decentralized C2 infrastructures that dynamically rotate between compromised devices. This ability to switch nodes and evade detection allows attackers to remain undetected for extended periods while maintaining persistent access to critical systems. Some malware, such as TheMoon, employs advanced evasion tactics like in-memory-only execution and frequent IP switching, making it even more difficult for defenders to track and mitigate.

Protect Your Edge (Devices)

Edge devices are no longer a minor part of the network. As attacks become more frequent and disruptive, we’re seeing edge device vulnerabilities as a key focal point for attackers seeking entry into corporate environments. As threat actors evolve their tactics and tools, the need for robust security practices around edge devices has become more critical than ever. Businesses must act quickly to secure their networks by closing the gaps in edge device security, ensuring these devices are properly secured through strong authentication methods, routine vulnerability scanning, and timely patch management.
