New Delhi, Aug 10: India’s electricity demand continued to climb during the April-June quarter, with peak power demand rising by 12 per cent, highlighting the country’s rapidly growing need for reliable electricity as households, businesses and industries expand their consumption.
The increase reflects the wider pace of economic activity and changing patterns of electricity use across the country. Rising temperatures, greater use of cooling appliances, expanding industrial operations and the growth of digital infrastructure are among the factors contributing to higher power consumption.
However, the sharp rise in demand has also placed additional pressure on the power system, particularly during the evening hours. The government has reported an evening power supply gap of around 3,045 MW, underlining the challenge of meeting demand when electricity consumption reaches its daily peak.
For ordinary households, reliable electricity during evening hours is especially important, when families return home, cooling systems are used more heavily and demand from commercial establishments remains high.
For businesses and industries, a stable power supply is equally important. Manufacturing units, offices, hospitals, transport systems and digital services all depend on uninterrupted electricity to operate efficiently.
The latest demand trend also highlights the importance of strengthening India’s power infrastructure ahead of future growth. Additional generation capacity, stronger transmission networks, modern distribution systems and better demand management will be essential as electricity consumption continues to increase.
India’s expanding renewable-energy capacity also offers an important opportunity. Solar and wind power can help meet rising electricity requirements while supporting the country’s clean-energy ambitions. At the same time, energy-storage systems can help address the challenge of meeting demand after sunset, when solar generation falls but electricity consumption remains high.
Improving grid flexibility will therefore become increasingly important. A combination of renewable generation, storage, flexible conventional capacity and efficient transmission can help ensure that electricity is available when consumers need it most.
The rise in power demand is ultimately a reflection of a growing economy and improving access to electricity. As more homes, businesses and industries become increasingly dependent on reliable power, ensuring adequate supply will remain central to India’s development.
The latest figures underline a clear priority for the years ahead: building a power system that can keep pace with India’s growth while remaining reliable, affordable and increasingly cleaner.
