Mumbai, Aug 25: Indian equity markets closed higher on Tuesday, supported by strong buying in pharmaceutical, healthcare and public-sector banking stocks.
The Sensex rose 286.98 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 77,656.09, while the Nifty gained 115.50 points, or 0.48 per cent, to finish at 24,334.55.
The markets witnessed volatility during the session amid concerns over elevated crude oil prices and global geopolitical tensions. However, buying in key sectors helped the benchmark indices recover from their early losses.
Pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks remained among the major performers, while PSU banks also contributed to the market’s gains. The broader buying interest helped improve investor sentiment towards the end of the trading session.
Market participants continued to track developments in global markets, crude oil prices and geopolitical developments, which could influence trading in the coming sessions.
Indian equities therefore ended Tuesday’s session on a firm note, with pharma, healthcare and PSU banking stocks emerging as key drivers of the day’s gains.
