INR 72 Lakh Claim Highlights Gaps in Health Insurance

India, Sep 3: A recent health insurance claim involving a 26-year-old accident victim has highlighted an emerging concern for Indian policyholders: whether conventional health insurance coverage is sufficient in today’s healthcare environment marked by rapidly rising medical costs. The policyholder, who had purchased a standard ₹10 lakh health insurance policy with an additional restoration benefit, suffered severe injuries in a road accident just four months after purchasing the policy. Following emergency evacuation and prolonged treatment, the total hospitalization bill reached nearly ₹72 lakh. Despite the claim falling within the insurer’s high-scrutiny early claim period, almost the entire hospitalization was settled through cashless approvals after continuous coordination between the insurer, hospital and claims support teams.

The case comes at a time when medical inflation continues to outpace general inflation, significantly increasing hospitalization costs across India. Critical care admissions, multiple surgeries and prolonged ICU stays can exhaust conventional health insurance limits much faster than many consumers anticipate.

According to Vaibhav Kathju, Founder, Inka Insurance, the incident reflects a much broader shift in the health insurance landscape.

“Most consumers still purchase health insurance by focusing primarily on the premium or the sum insured. However, today’s healthcare costs require policyholders to think beyond the base cover. The right policy structure, restoration benefits and professional claims support can significantly influence how effectively a claim is settled during a medical emergency.”

The incident also demonstrates the challenges surrounding early high-value claims. Claims filed within the initial months of policy issuance often undergo enhanced verification due to fraud prevention protocols, making the claims process more complex during emergencies.

Industry experts believe consumers should evaluate several factors before purchasing health insurance, including restoration benefits, policy conditions, claims assistance and insurer servicing capabilities, rather than comparing premiums alone.

“Insurance should ultimately deliver financial protection when families need it the most. A policy’s true value is determined not during purchase but during hospitalization, when timely guidance and efficient claims support become critical,” Vaibhav added.

With healthcare expenses continuing to rise, the case reinforces the need for consumers to periodically reassess whether their existing health insurance coverage adequately reflects current treatment costs and evolving medical risks.
