How Emerging Female Writers Are Redefining Success and Independence

Navratri, the celebration of female strength, resilience, and creativity, offers the perfect opportunity to spotlight young Indian female writers who are making waves in the entertainment industry. These women are redefining success, not just by carving out a name for themselves in the creative world but also by embracing financial responsibilities within their families, transforming the very narrative of empowerment.

The Indian entertainment industry is undergoing a creative renaissance, driven by a wave of female writers crafting powerful, thought-provoking narratives. Their work not only highlights female perspectives but also breaks away from traditional storytelling norms. Recent Hindi OTT series and films, such as Laapata Ladies (written by Sneha Desai and India’s official entry for the Oscars), Dahaad and Made In Heaven (co-written by Reema Kagti), and Lipstick Under My Burkha (written by Alankrita Shrivastava), are examples of how women are at the forefront of this change. Women-led stories are experiencing an all-time high in India’s entertainment landscape, and Laapata Ladies, which is India’s official Oscar entry, is a testament to this fact. It highlights how narratives centred around women are not only resonating with audiences but also gaining international recognition, showcasing the power and impact of female-driven storytelling.

Lipstick Under My Burkha unapologetically delves into the lives of women navigating conservative societal norms while pursuing their desires. Similarly, Chhapaak, which tells the story of an acid attack survivor. Reema Kagti’s Dahaad and Made In Heaven focus on women grappling with modern challenges in India, offering nuanced portrayals of strong, complex characters. Sneha Desai, the writer behind Laapata Ladies, brings a fresh and dynamic perspective to the screen, crafting narratives that delve into the complexities of womanhood while weaving in humour and social commentary. These women-driven stories are reshaping how Indian audiences view female empowerment.

Beyond the big screen, audio platforms like have given a stage to emerging female writers such as Moni Singh, Monika Dhruv, and Siya Soni. These women have found massive success through their compelling audio series, proving that creativity knows no bounds. Their work on Pocket FM, spanning genres from romance to thrillers, has not only gained widespread popularity but has also allowed them to achieve financial independence.

These writers are becoming key contributors to their families and gaining recognition from their communities, setting an example for young girls across India who aspire to follow their footsteps.

For these female writerssuccess is not just professional; it extends into their personal lives as well. Writers like Moni Singh and Siya Soni have become significant financial contributors in their households, a notable achievement in Tier 2 cities and small towns where traditional gender roles often dictate women’s career paths. Their success challenges these norms, highlighting the importance of financial independence for women in today’s world.

Monika Dhruv, a married writer, explains how wonderfully she’s been balancing her family and career: “Thanks to platforms like Pocket FM, I can work with flexibility, and that has been a game-changer. It allows me to manage my time between family and my career.” Monika’s story is emblematic of the flexibility and freedom that digital platforms provide to women who want to succeed professionally without sacrificing personal responsibilities.

The rise of these young female writers reflects a broader shift in how working women are perceived, especially in smaller towns and Tier 2 cities. Where traditional expectations once limited women’s professional ambitions, the achievements of our writers are proving that women can successfully pursue creative careers while contributing to their families. Their stories are reshaping societal perceptions, showing that it’s not only possible but essential for women to be independent.

By earning respect from their loved ones, extended relatives, and peers, these writers are also becoming role models for young girls and fans who follow their work. They are proving that independence, creativity, and success are not mutually exclusive but are instead integral to shaping the future of women in India.

As Navratri celebrates the power and resilience of women, these writers embody the spirit of the festival. Their journeys are a testament to how success is multifaceted—it’s about breaking barriers, earning respect, and inspiring the next generation of female storytellers to dream big and pursue their passions.

As per Moni Singh’s remark: “Being a writer today is both liberating and challenging. Every word I put down feels like a piece of me, a reflection of my thoughts, struggles, and dreams. It’s a privilege to tell stories, but it also comes with the responsibility to stay true to myself and the voices I represent.”

Monika Dhruv concurs: “Balancing life as a writer and as a woman can be tough. There are days when the weight of responsibilities feels overwhelming, but writing gives me strength. It’s my way of showing that we can be more than one thing, and it’s the challenges that shape our best stories.”

Siya Soni says: “Writing is where I find my freedom. It’s empowering to shape narratives that inspire and connect with others. As a woman, I feel an added strength knowing that my stories reflect not just my experiences but the resilience of so many women like me.”

As more young female writers step into the spotlight, they’re not just transforming storytelling but also proving that success is multifaceted, defined not only by professional achievements but by the impact they have on society at large.

VRSI and RSSDI Launch First-of-its-Kind Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Guidelines Aimed at Preventing Diabetes-related Vision Loss

Bengaluru, October 14, 2024: With over 101 million people with diabetes in India, the country has emerged as the diabetes capital of the world. As a result, a simultaneous and sharp rise has been observed in the prevalence of diabetes-related preventable vision loss. A diabetologist plays an important role in timely screening for diabetic retinopathy and referring to an ophthalmologist for its management. Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI) and Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) have collaborated to formulate first-of-its-kind Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Guidelines, which will help every physician and diabetologist in India to educate their patients regarding diabetic retinopathy.

Owing to lifestyle modifications, migration to cities, obesity, and stress, there has been an increase in the number of diabetes patients in the country, parallelly increasing the number of diabetes related vision loss cases. Type -2 diabetes is common amongst the working-age population, impacting their physical and mental health. This condition if not screened timely can become the leading cause of blindness in India, causing a huge economic burden. With a national prevalence of 12.5% of diabetic retinopathy and 4% of vision-threatening ‘Diabetic Retinopathy’, approximately 3 million Indians are at a risk of vision loss. This highlights the critical need for timely screening of every patient with diabetes to prevent an irreversible loss of vision, which goes undetected in its early stage and is thus aptly known as a ‘silent thief of sight.’

This initiative aims to empower healthcare professionals—often the first point of contact for those living with diabetes—with the tools and knowledge necessary to promote early detection and intervention, ultimately reducing the risk of severe vision impairment and blindness caused due to diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy screening guidelines for Physicians in India: Position statement by VRSI and RSSDI were released at a conference in Delhi, with eminent healthcare professionals and industry body leaders in attendance. Dr. Sudha Chandrashekar (Former Executive Director, National Health Authority – Ministry of Health and Family Welfare), Dr. R. Kim (President, VRSI), Dr. Manisha Agarwal (Gen Secretary, VRSI), Dr. Rakesh Sahay (President, RSSDI), and Dr. Sanjay Agarwal (Secretary General, RSSDI) shared their insights during the session, outlining the status of diabetic retinopathy in India and the gaps being bridged by the established recommendations.

Dr. Sudha Chandrashekar, Former Executive Director, National Health Authority – Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, added, “To safeguard the vision of millions of Indians living with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy screening has been integrated into the government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. By prioritizing early detection at a national level, this initiative aims to preserve eyesight and improve health outcomes across the country. Diabetic retinopathy screening is particularly beneficial for the beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme, helping to avoid higher costs in the management of advanced stages of DR and ensuring better health outcomes.”

Dr. R Kim, President, VRSI, commented, “We’re pleased to collectively unveil these guidelines and set a new standard for diabetic retinopathy screening in India. By encouraging collaboration between physicians, diabetologists, and ophthalmologists, we aim to promote better diabetes management and reduce the incidence of preventable vision loss across the nation.”

Highlighting the importance of diabetic retinopathy screening, Dr. Manisha Agarwal, Gen Secretary, VRSI, said, “Despite the increasing prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, limited awareness and the often asymptomatic nature of the condition result in a disappointingly low number of individuals with diabetes seeking eye screenings. This makes it imperative to raise awareness about vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy and the need for timely screening and management.”

” In India, the growing number of individuals living with diabetes highlights the importance of not only monitoring glucose levels but also undergoing regular screenings for other health complications associated with diabetes to maintain overall health. Diabetic retinopathy is one such complication that, if left untreated, can cause severe and often irreversible vision loss. These guidelines will play a key role in increasing awareness among general physicians and diabetologists about the critical need for timely diabetic retinopathy screening,” stated Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, Secretary General, RSSDI.

Published in the renowned International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries, the guidelines serve as a comprehensive reckoner and mark a crucial milestone in India’s journey to advancing diabetes management and screening for Diabetic retinopathy effectively.

UN Envoy Prods Businesses to Steer the Ship of Sustainable Development, Hails India as a Crucial Player

New Delhi: This week, at the much-anticipated National Sustainability Symposium hosted by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, the United Nations called on Indian businesses to take the helm in driving global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), asserting that “the business sector is not only vital but perhaps the linchpin in this entire effort.”

HG Shombi Sharp, the UN’s Resident Coordinator in India, emphasized that governments and international institutions alone lack the capacity to achieve the SDGs by the 2030 deadline.

“No government or multilateral organization has the sheer financial firepower to generate the needed jobs, construct the necessary infrastructure, or supply affordable goods and services at the scale that’s required. This is where businesses enter the picture. If business interests align with SDG objectives, we’re looking at the potential for unlocking a whopping $12 trillion in new opportunities,” Sharp explained at the Summit in Tuesday.

Touting India’s turbocharged economic ascent, Sharp hailed the nation as “a beacon of hope,” remarking that India could be on track to become the planet’s third-largest economy by 2030. But he was quick to point out that this economic rise must be environmentally sound. “India’s audacious goal of reaching 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030 hinges on a tight-knit collaboration between the government and private enterprises,” he noted.

Sharp also commended India’s trailblazing efforts in climate action, citing initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, both aimed at empowering developing countries to confront the escalating dangers posed by climate change. He spotlighted India’s breakthroughs in sustainable textiles, its green economic momentum, and the adoption of circular economy practices within its business framework.

The UN official highlighted the urgent need to nurture a workforce fit for India’s impending green transformation, pointing out that nearly one million young people are joining the labor pool each month. He emphasized the need to weave sustainability into the very fabric of Indian business operations, from supply chains to CSR initiatives, noting how India’s Companies Act 2013 had spurred a significant uptick in CSR activities.

“Pursuing sustainable development isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s smart business. India is carving out a role as a global leader in eco-innovation, and the partnership between businesses and the state will be a game-changer in shaping what comes next,” Sharp said.

Adding his voice to the discourse, Naresh Tyagi, chairman of the ICC and Chief Sustainability Officer at Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, remarked, “Sustainability must become the heartbeat of our operations, ingrained in the DNA of our business. With India’s resolute focus on the circular economy and renewable energy, we are poised to reap vast economic rewards. But this endeavor demands teamwork, bold thinking, and unified action. Together, we can secure a sustainable future not just for India, but for the whole world.”
