Joint Replacement- Precision matters the most

Dr Ramneek Mahajan, Senior Director and Head, Joint Replacement unit (Knee and Hip), Max SMART Super Specialty Hospital, Saket , New Delhi

Why Knee replacement?

– Knee replacement surgery is a treatment for pain and disability in the knee. The most common condition that results in the need for knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage. Damage to the cartilage and bones limits movement and may cause pain. People with severe degenerative joint disease may be unable to do normal activities that involve bending at the knee, such as walking or climbing stairs, because they are painful. The knee may swell or “give-way” because the joint is not stable. The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments. In determining whether a knee replacement is right for you, an orthopaedic surgeon assesses your knee’s range of motion, stability and strength. X-rays help determine the extent of damage.

Now, with an advancement of technology and innovation- Robotic joint replacement surgery is a new and exciting option for those needing hip or knee replacements. This new technology revolutionizes the way we think about joint replacement surgeries. Using robots to increase precision and accuracy during surgeries, results in shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, quicker recoveries, and improved outcomes for patients. The extra precision enabled by the robotic assisted technology should also prevent surgeons having to do redo hip and knee replacement operations that don’t work out the first time.

Myth -Robot will perform the surgery independently, but the actual fact, at no point the robot performs the surgery independently. It only assists the surgeon to perform the surgery with precision. It helps in creating precise bone cuts and implant alignment for patients Without the surgeon’s guidance, the robot cannot either move or make its own decisions.

Robotic joint replacement surgery is procedure that can be performed with minimal incisions, resulting in minimal scarring. It is performed using a computer-like electronic operating station where the surgeon operates a specialized camera and robotic arms to carry out the operation. Before the surgery, a CT scan is used to produce a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This helps the surgeon plan the surgery and also place the implant with the utmost accuracy. During the surgery, the robotic arm is used to precisely make cuts which are first planned on basis of 3D reconstructed CT images obtained pre surgery, as it works in designated safe boundary under control of surgeon holding the robotic arm it protects the surrounding tissue from unintentional damage. The surgery usually takes less than two hours for both knee joint and patients can typically go home in a day or two.

In Max SMART Super Speciality, Saket, MAKO system uses Triathlon Knee System (Stryker) which has 99.7% survivorship, rapid abandonment of crutches, lesser Anterior Knee pain and reduction in physiotherapy sessions. Robotic surgery preserves all the natural structures of the joint (less tissue damage), ensures minimal pain and early recovery

Languages grow on the basis of its utility and need: Prof. Dwivedi

Languages grow on the basis of its utility and need: Prof. Dwivedi New Delhi, 03 March: “Languages develop based on their utility, necessity, and ability. If our languages are limited today, we cannot put the responsibility on anyone else. Languages and mothers are lauded by their children. For the development of languages, we have to decide such ways, through which languages can progress.”

These views were expressed by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Dwivedi, Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication during the two-day national seminar organized on the topic ”BhartiyaBhasha aur Bhartiya Gyan Parampara” under the joint aegis of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti (Ministry of Education, Government of India) and Arundhati Bhartiya Gyan Parampara Kendra, PGDAV College (Evening). On this occasion the principal of the college, Prof. Ravindra Kumar Gupta, Prof. Umapati Dixit from Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra, JP Singh, Assistant Registrar of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, and Prof. Harish Arora, coordinator of the seminar, was present.

Prof. Dwivedi stated that the time has come where we should encourage and respect our languages. Hindi and other Indian languages are gaining strength and recognition on a global platform. By speaking Hindi, the country’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is ruling the hearts of the world.

During the seminar, Prof. Ravindra Kumar Gupta, the college’s principal, stated that Indian words are common in both Bhartiya Bhashayen and Bhartiya Gyan Parampara. If we want to know and understand India, we must first understand the Bhartiya Gyan Parampara. According to Prof. Umapati Dixit, Bhartiya Bhashayen and Bhartiya Gyan Parampara are as pure, flowing, intact, and uninterrupted as the Ganges. Language, like the Ganges, flows in its own way, assimilating culture and civilization.

On this occasion, Assistant Registrar of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, J.P. Singh said that we work for the promotion and development of languages. Languages are carriers of culture and their protection is necessary. As a guest speaker, Prof. Rachna Vimal of Satyavati College’s Department of Hindi stated that every countryman should learn an Indian language other than his mother tongue.

The two-day National Seminar featured five sessions that were successfully organized. Prof. Harish Arora, the seminar’s coordinator, stated that India has always been superior in the field of knowledge. The Vedas were written in India at a time when most people did not know how to read or write. This is why India is known as Vishwaguru.ᐧ

BQP’s aggressive plans to hire engineering talent even as Tech majors announce lay-offs

New Delhi/Bangalore, March 2023 – Since the beginning of 2023, there has been blood on the tech streets on a global scale. As economic growth slowed, tech companies worldwide, including major players such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta, have given thousands of their employees’ pink slips. Interestingly, proving an exception amidst this bloodbath, an Indian deep-tech start-up BosonQ Psi (BQP), is also all set to add to its team in a significant way.

BosonQ Psi (BQP) recently launched the first Quantum-powered computer-aided engineering (CAE) software suite – BQPhy®. The software suite enables enterprise customers to perform complex simulations using Quantum computers. BQPhy® has already been used for proofs-of-concept with global automakers and will serve customers from verticals including but not limited to automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, energy, and biotechnology.

Proving to be an exception to the rule

Despite mass lay-offs announced by Tech majors, BQP is actively hiring talented individuals passionate about engineering the future and looking to work in deep tech and quantum computing.

BQP is expected to continue its upward graph in 2023 and saw significant growth last year. In addition, BQP is rapidly scaling its operations as it plans to hire 50 percent of its quantum workforce from India.

Founded in late 2020, Bangalore based BQP is leading India’s quantum supremacy as it plans to expand its footprint by setting up US and UK offices in the coming year.

Aditya Singh, Founding Member, Head of Growth & Infrastructure, BosonQ Psi, said, “Being one of the industry leaders in quantum computing, we provide significant career opportunities for students pursuing education in STEM fields. New Delhi World Book Fair 2023: Dr. Neena Rao Highlights the need for special education through her book “Mindscapes: Canvas of Emotions in a Special World”

New Delhi World Book Fair 2023

Delhi, 3rd March 2023: Margika Foundation, a Hyderabad and US-based NGO, showcases the coffee table book ‘Mindscapes: A Canvas of Emotions in a Special World!’ that delineates the special talents and honest, straight-from-the-heart stories of kids and young adults with special needs.

With a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, ‘Mindscapes: A Canvas of Emotions in a Special World!’ has been inspired by Meraki, a virtual talent show established during the pandemic by Margika’s founder Neena Rao to help Special Needs children from all over the world.

The book features a treasure of art pieces and other talents by children with special needs and the world will get to hear these stories in their voices. Along with every art piece, there are verses regarding the child’s feelings about the work they have created or how they feel about that particular talent. The majority of these children are from rural government schools and thus, belong to the most socially and economically disadvantaged group of society.

Art and creativity are the best mediums to voice and reach the innermost recesses of one’s mind and heart. They are also the finest means to help reduce anxiety and stress in children as well as adults. The book is a sincere expression of the ideas of these special children and is a treasure house of poems, paintings, essays, sketches, and stories.

The aim of the beautifully-illustrated book is the same as Margika’s — to not only rise and meet the Special kids’ esteem and self-actualization needs and provide them with a sense of love, safety, and belonging, but also to empathize, raise awareness about, and destigmatize the special needs children.

“I didn’t want any other child to suffer like my son. We need an inclusive society. Children with special needs deserve to lead happy and normal lives. I started Margika to make a difference to the children and their families”. Says Dr. Neena Rao.

“Our objective is to offer help, guidance, and encouragement to individuals with special needs in the long run, adding more meaning to the cause that Margika believes in,” she further adds.

Margika was founded by Dr. Neena Rao, a mother of a boy with Aspergers (a developmental disorder affecting the ability to effectively socialise and communicate). He inspired her to give up her career as an academic and development professional to create Margika – a Network for Training & Capacity Building for Better Care of Children with Special Needs.
