Apr,20(BNP): The ongoing Iran conflict has severely impacted Indian onion farmers, with disruptions in key export markets leading to a sharp decline in demand and prices. The crisis has affected crucial trade routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in the suspension of shipments to major Gulf destinations.

Consequently, thousands of tonnes of export-quality onions, mainly from Maharashtra and Gujarat, have been stranded at ports or diverted to domestic markets. This sudden influx has created an oversupply situation, triggering a fall in wholesale prices and causing significant financial strain on farmers and traders.

Additionally, escalating freight costs and logistical challenges have made exports economically unviable, further compounding the crisis. Industry stakeholders have warned that prolonged disruptions could lead to sustained market instability.

They have urged the government to take immediate steps to support affected farmers, stabilise prices, and ensure the smooth functioning of export channels.
