New Delhi, Aug 21: A strong earthquake struck southern Peru on Thursday, causing concern among residents and leaving at least three people with minor injuries, according to a preliminary assessment.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at 6.7 magnitude, with the epicentre located about 40 kilometres northwest of Upahuacho. The quake occurred at around 1 p.m. local time at a depth of nearly 99 kilometres.

Peru’s Geophysical Institute recorded the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.2 and estimated its depth at 108 kilometres.
The earthquake affected several communities in the Ayacucho region, including the areas around Puquio and Coracora. Emergency teams have been sent to the region to assess the situation and support affected residents.
Initial reports indicate that 22 homes, six schools and 12 medical centres have been affected. Authorities are continuing to inspect buildings and gather information from areas close to the epicentre.
Local media also reported landslides and falling rocks around Coracora, which is the closest town to the earthquake’s epicentre.
Officials are monitoring the situation and carrying out further damage assessments. Residents in affected areas have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions from local authorities as emergency teams continue their work.
