Honouring the Elderly: Roots of Wisdom and Pillars of Society Let’s observe World Senior Citizens’ Day

BIRBAL By – Dr. Birbal Jha

Across continents and civilizations, the elderly have been revered as the custodians of wisdom, the bearers of culture, and the moral compass of society. Their experiences form the backbone of our collective identity, reminding us that while youth may power the present, it is age that safeguards the future. As an old African proverb wisely says, “When an elder dies, a library burns.” This eternal truth reminds us that every elderly person embodies an archive of history, lessons, and values that no book alone can preserve.

In India, the tradition of “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava”—seeing parents as divine—emphasizes the sacred duty of respecting and caring for our elders. Similarly, the Chinese say, “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade.” This proverb beautifully reflects how the sacrifices of one generation provide comfort and progress to the next. Indeed, the elderly, through their struggles and endurance, plant the trees of opportunity under which the youth sit today.

Every culture, in its own idiom, celebrates the dignity of age. In Greece, there is a saying: “A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” It underlines how the elderly embody selflessness, thinking beyond themselves to nurture future generations. In Africa, people wisely observe, “The youth walk faster, but the elder knows the road.” This reminds us that progress is not a matter of speed alone, but of direction—and it is the wisdom of the elderly that keeps society from losing its way.

The strength of communities lies in their intergenerational bonds. A Kenyan proverb says, “Sticks in a bundle are unbreakable.” Just as families and societies thrive when young and old stand together, so too does the world become stronger when it honours the wisdom of the past while preparing for the challenges of tomorrow. In Scandinavian culture, we hear, “A shared joy is a double joy; a shared sorrow is half a sorrow.” Elders play this vital role of multiplying joy and soothing sorrow within families, creating emotional resilience in communities.

Even in modern times, nations that value their senior citizens are those that thrive. Japan, with its deep-rooted practice of Keiro no Hi (Respect for the Aged Day), provides a model for the world. The Japanese proverb, “The old age of an eagle is better than the youth of a sparrow,” conveys how age brings refinement and depth of character. Meanwhile, Native American wisdom teaches us: “We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” This bridges the wisdom of the past with the responsibility of the present, highlighting how elders are the link between history and destiny.

Caring for the elderly is not merely an act of kindness—it is the ethical foundation of society. If we neglect our elders, we impoverish ourselves. For, as the Igbo of Nigeria put it: “What the elders see while sitting, the young cannot see standing on tiptoe.” It is their insight that helps societies navigate crises and preserve continuity.

On this World Senior Citizens’ Day, let us reaffirm the truth that the elderly are not a burden but a blessing. They are the roots that nourish our family trees, the storytellers who keep culture alive, and the guardians of ethical values that prevent societies from drifting into chaos. By honouring them, we are not only paying respect to their past contributions but also securing a wiser and more compassionate future for ourselves.

My guiding belief has always been: Language for livelihood, culture for identity, and ethics for society. Let us live by this ethos by speaking to our elders with respect, celebrating the cultural wisdom they pass on, and upholding the ethics of care and solidarity across generations.

For in the words of a timeless Chinese proverb, “Filial piety is the root of virtue.” The way we treat our senior citizens is the clearest reflection of our humanity. Let us, therefore, honour wisdom, strengthen bonds, and build a future-ready society—hand in hand with those who walked before us.

Senior citizens are the living libraries of our civilization, the guiding lights who have walked the long road of life with courage, sacrifice, and wisdom. Their contributions—whether in nurturing families, building institutions, preserving culture, or shaping the nation—are the very foundation on which our society stands today.

As we celebrate Senior Citizens’ Day, let us honor their toil and treasure their wisdom. In respecting and caring for our elders, we are not merely repaying a debt of gratitude but also safeguarding the values that define our humanity. They are the roots that keep us grounded and the beacons that show us the way forward.

On this day, I call upon every citizen, young and old alike, to rise in respect, express gratitude, and pledge support for our seniors, for a society that reveres its elders is one that secures its future.

PM Modi to inaugurate Aunta Simaria highway project with 6 lane Ganga bridge tomorrow

New Delhi/ Patna, Aug 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will tomorrow inaugurate the 8.15-km Aunta–Simaria highway project on NH-31 in Bihar, which includes a 1.86-km six-lane bridge across the Ganga, built at a cost of over Rs 1,870 crore. The project will provide direct connectivity between Mokama in Patna district and Begusarai.

ganga bridge

The bridge, India’s widest extradosed cable-stayed structures, stands 34 metres wide with segment lengths ranging from 57 to 115 metres and 70-metre cantilever arms, making it a landmark in highway engineering. Constructed parallel to the ageing two-lane Rajendra Setu, which is under repair and closed for heavy vehicles, the new bridge will ease long-standing traffic bottlenecks. Heavy vehicles will no longer be forced to take detours of more than 100 km, cutting travel time between north Bihar districts such as Begusarai, Supaul, Madhubani, Purnea and Araria, and south Bihar regions including Patna, Sheikhpura, Nawada and Lakhisarai.

Officials said the project is expected to drive economic growth in adjoining areas, particularly in north Bihar, which depends on south Bihar and Jharkhand for raw materials. It will also open up new opportunities for farmers, especially makhana growers, by providing faster access to national and international markets. Industrial hubs like Barauni are also expected to benefit from smoother freight movement.

Built with high-performance concrete incorporating silica fume to enhance durability, the bridge has been designed to withstand heavy traffic volumes for years. Construction also included a Railway Under Bridge using push-box technology, ensuring uninterrupted train movement during the project’s execution.

The new link will further improve access to Simaria Dham, a prominent pilgrimage site and the birthplace of celebrated poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.

Terming the inauguration as the new chapter in Bihar’s development journey, Bihar’s Road Construction Minister Nitin Navin said, “From laying the foundation in 2017 to inaugurating it, the Hon’ble Prime Minister has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment and enduring vision to strengthening Bihar’s connectivity and growth. This bridge will significantly reduce the distance between north and south Bihar and stand as a signature project of progress. It is a reminder of how far the state has travelled from the lantern age, when craters passed for roads. The Prime Minister envisions Bihar as the next growth engine, and every effort is being directed towards building a strong launch pad for that future.”

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the four-lane Bakhtiyarpur to Mokama section of NH-31, worth around Rs 1,900 crore, which will ease congestion, reduce travel time, and enhance passenger and freight movement. Further, improvement to the two-lane with paved shoulders of Bikramganj–Dawath–Nawanagar–Dumraon section of NH-120 in Bihar will improve connectivity in rural areas, providing new economic opportunities for the local population.

Pune, India: Suzlon Group, has become the first Indian energy company to join the prestigious RE100 Initiative—a global movement led by Climate Group in partnership with CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project). Suzlon has pledged to use 100% renewable energy by 2030 at all 15 manufacturing facilities, reinforcing its leadership in clean, responsible manufacturing.

This milestone is part of Suzlon’s broader decarbonization roadmap — achieving Carbon Neutrality (for Scope 1 and 2 emissions) by 2035 and Net Zero (Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions) by 2040. Scope 1 covers direct operational emissions, Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity, and Scope 3 spans the entire value chain — from suppliers to the lifecycle of products. With this commitment, Suzlon is embedding sustainability into the very core of its operations, staying true to its founding purpose of combating climate change.

Mr. JP Chalasani, CEO Suzlon Group said, “Joining RE100 is a powerful affirmation of our belief that true leadership in renewable energy begins at home — in how we run our own operations. We are not just delivering clean power to the world; we are ensuring that every megawatt we produce is backed by a manufacturing process powered entirely by renewables. This commitment is both a responsibility to the planet and a promise to future generations — to lead by example, to innovate without compromise, and to embed sustainability into the DNA of everything we do.”

Over the last year, Suzlon has made significant progress in advancing its ESG goals, with clear and measurable achievements. The company reached 92.87% carbon neutrality at even plant level in Rotor Blade Unit, Dhule being powered by 100% renewables, reflecting its strong commitment to environmental stewardship. Contribute to make India globally competitive, says R. Ravi Kumar, President, FTCCI

Hyderabad, August 20, 2025: The Federation of Telangana Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FTCCI), in collaboration with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), organised a half-day seminar on Empowering MSMEs through Strategic Finance and Marketing Excellence at Federation House on Wednesday.

FTCCI

Delivering the keynote address, V.V.R. Prasad, DGM, SIDBI, Hyderabad, said MSMEs play a pivotal role in the national economy by significantly contributing to exports and employment. He elaborated on several sector-specific SIDBI schemes: TUF Scheme – for the textile sector; Green Financing – for sustainable business practices; AHIDF Scheme – for the food sector; SHWAS Scheme – for healthcare enterprises; SMILE (SIDBI Make in India Soft Loan Fund for MSMEs); Ubharte Sitaare – for export-oriented MSMEs with high potential; STHAPAN – for greenfield manufacturing/service units; SAATH – supports MSMEs promoted by SC/ST entrepreneurs and ARJANA – dedicated to women-led MSMEs

He also spoke about general schemes on technology upgradation, working capital, credit guarantee support, and SIDBI’s digital initiatives, such as PSB Loans in 59 Minutes and the Jan Samarth portal, designed to enhance credit access for MSMEs.

Welcoming the participants, R. Ravi Kumar, President, FTCCI, said “The road ahead for MSMEs is challenging. They need the right tools and strategies to withstand global pressures like tariff threats. MSMEs are critical in making India stronger and globally competitive.

Ravi Kumar further said that, in the current era, Trump’s Tariff threats can only be withstood by a strong nation like India. MSMEs play a huge role in making India even stronger and more future-ready. Together, we make India stronger and the Trump Tariff threat-free. Knowledge must be shared democratically—seminars like this are an important step.”

Premchand Kankaria, Chairman, Banking, Finance & Insurance Committee, FTCCI, in his introductory remarks, said MSMEs—while being the backbone of the Indian economy—face challenges in accessing affordable capital and becoming digital-ready. “They need cost-effective digital marketing strategies and easy credit facilities for survival and growth. FTCCI has always been at the forefront in equipping MSMEs with the required ammunition for progress,” he said.

Kiran Babu, Founder of Rava.ai and mentor to startups at ISB, IIT Mandi, T-Hub, BIMTECH, spoke on Digital Marketing Foundations and Cost-Effective Strategies. Speaking, he said, Marketing is not sales—it is about creating awareness and making the sales team’s job easy. In the era of ChatGPT, Digital Marketing Agencies are losing their relevance, particularly in content management. The cost of hiring such agencies has dropped to one-tenth. Today, your website is your business card. Google and social media ads work, but content must be exclusive, hyper-personal, multi-lingual, and video-first.”

He added, “This is the era of social videos. Consumer appetite has shifted—text messages are ignored, and only video content is well-received. As AI reshapes industries, collaboration between technology and marketing professionals becomes more critical than ever.”

The seminar also included sessions on Financial Planning and Credit Management for MSMEs and an Overview of SIDBI Financial Schemes.

K.K. Maheshwari, FTCCI, proposed the vote of thanks.

5 Reasons Why Steamed South Indian Dishes Are Healthier and Cleaner

healthier food

The right kind of cooking is also a quiet declaration of care. And steaming, perhaps more than any other method, carries that grace effortlessly. It respects the ingredients, the eater, and even the kitchen that prepares it. In South Indian cuisine, especially at places like Kamats Legacy that honour heritage and hygiene in equal measure, steamed dishes occupy a special place not only on the menu, but in the hearts of the people. Here’s why steamed food continues to be one of the healthiest, cleanest, and most comforting choices on any South Indian thali:

1. Because good health should taste this good

Well-regarded South Indian dining spaces have dishes like Thatte Idli, Ghee Podi Idli, and Kanchipuram Idli taking centre stage. Made without oil, and rich in complex carbs and fibre, these dishes are light on the stomach but incredibly satisfying. Steamed food retains the natural flavour and texture of ingredients without masking them under oil a principle that defines kitchens like Kamats Legacy.

2. Fermentation & steam = a gut-friendly powerhouse

Take a closer look at Set Idli served with coconut chutney and molagapodi it’s a perfect example of how fermented batter, when steamed, becomes a probiotic gift to the body. The process preserves nutrients, regulates digestion, and promotes satiety. At thoughtful vegetarian kitchens across India, this balance of science and soul makes steamed fare the main event, not just a side act.

3. Hygienic, efficient, and kind to the kitchen

Unlike frying or grilling, steaming keeps the kitchen clean and smoke-free a big plus for professional kitchens serving hundreds each day. It’s water-efficient and allows bulk cooking with minimal fuss. Iconic eateries with banana leaf service, like Kamats Legacy, lean on steam-based prep to maintain freshness and speed.

4. Food that heals across generations

From a toddler’s first bite to an elderly parent’s comfort meal dishes like Idiyappam, Appam Thengai Paal, and Annam Thakali Rasam are beloved across age groups. They’re warm, gentle, and easy to digest. In a culture where food is medicine, this kind of versatility is gold. Steaming, then, becomes more than a technique it becomes a philosophy.

5. Every dish carries a memory and a method

There’s nostalgia in a plate of Appam Malabar Stew or Bisi Belle Bath steamed just right. These dishes have lasted because they were crafted with purpose to cool, to calm, to nourish. At Kamats Legacy, where only high-quality oils like groundnut oil are used (and only where needed), steaming is the foundation. It preserves both authenticity and flavour, exactly as tradition intended.

At a time when hygiene is sold like a product, steamed South Indian food is a humble yet powerful reminder that simplicity works. It respects the body, honours tradition, and delivers warmth in every bite. Perhaps that’s why it’s never really gone out of fashion and that’s why it’s needed now more than ever.

India’s First Indigenously Built Electric Tractor Officially Registered at Thane RTO

18th August, 2025 – AutoNxt, a company known for its innovation-driven technology, has successfully launched India’s first indigenously manufactured electric tractor. Today, the first official vehicle registration of this tractor was carried out at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Thane.

Speaking at the event, Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Hon. Shri Pratap Sarnaik, said that this electric tractor will prove to be a boon for both farmers and the industrial sector, triggering a significant electric revolution across the country. Last year, Maharashtra’s then Chief Minister, Hon. Shri Eknath Shinde, had unveiled this tractor, and within a short span, it has received an overwhelming response from across India.

The electric tractor has been successfully tested in several states across the country. It has delivered excellent results in applications with local self-governments, cow shelters (gaushalas), biomass plants, dairy farms, and sugar factories. Its efficiency, eco-friendliness, and fuel cost savings have been distinctly evident.

Until now, the absence of alternative solutions meant farmers and institutions had to rely solely on diesel-powered tractors. But with the availability of this electric tractor, its adoption is expected to grow rapidly in both government and private sectors. This will significantly reduce fuel expenses, lower maintenance costs, and provide substantial economic benefits. Being environment-friendly, it will also contribute to maintaining a cleaner and greener atmosphere.

Electric vehicles are emerging as an effective technology to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and increase energy efficiency. Both the central and state governments are consistently working to promote the adoption of electric vehicles.

Commenting on the occasion, Kaustabh Dhonde, Founder & CEO, AutoNXT said “This moment marks the beginning of a transformative shift in agricultural technology. Our indigenously developed electric tractor is a testament to India’s engineering capabilities and our commitment to sustainable solutions. In addition to this Mr. Pankaj Goyal, Co-founder and COO, AutoNXT said “It’s not just a product—it’s a movement toward a cleaner, more cost-effective, and future-ready India.”

Under the Maharashtra State Electric Vehicle Policy 2025, the target is to have 20% of new vehicle registrations comprising battery electric vehicles by 2025. Thane RTO officer Mrs. Hemangini Patil expressed confidence that AutoNxt’s electric tractor will play a significant role in achieving this goal.
