HITS Professor and NTU Convert Carbon Dioxide to Renewable Fuels Using Sunlight

Mumbai / Chennai, 17th May 2025: In a significant stride towards combating climate change, Professor Indrajit Shown from the Chemistry Department at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), Chennai, has developed a photocatalytic system that transforms harmful carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable renewable fuels using sunlight. This research, published in the prestigious journal Nano Energy, marks a major advancement in green chemistry and aligns with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Indrajit Shown, in collaboration with Dr. Li-Chyong Chen’s team from National Taiwan University, engineered a novel ZnS/ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) heterostructure photocatalyst. This innovative material utilizes solar energy to efficiently convert CO2 into hydrocarbons, notably acetaldehyde (C2H4O), a crucial step towards sustainable fuel production. The team successfully created a single-pot hydrothermally synthesized ZnS/ZIS composite, which introduced a novel strain-induced direct Z-scheme mechanism, significantly enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency.

This advanced ZnS/ZIS composite has demonstrated a quantum efficiency 200 times higher than conventional ZnS-based methods, significantly improving the process of CO₂ reduction. Unlike previous approaches, the system selectively produces acetaldehyde using visible light, a crucial advancement in green fuel technology. Stringent isotope-labeled ¹³CO₂ testing confirmed that the hydrocarbons generated originated directly from CO₂ photoreduction, eliminating contamination concerns. This research directly contributes to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

AI Samarth Launches ‘AI Literacy Curriculum Framework’ for Future-Ready Bharat

16th May, 2025, New Delhi: Marking a pivotal moment in India’s education landscape, Central Square Foundation (CSF), with support from Google.org, and in collaboration with the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at IIT Madras, launched the AI Literacy Curriculum Framework for Students at the ‘AI Samarth Conclave’ in New Delhi. This represents a significant milestone for ‘AI Samarth’, an initiative to empower over 50 lakh students, teachers, and parents across government and affordable private schools in India with the requisite knowledge and capacity to engage with AI effectively, safely, and responsibly.

AI is rapidly emerging as a transformative force in shaping society, influencing daily life across sectors, including education. As AI profoundly impacts the education sector, it brings opportunities to make learning deeply personalised, adaptive, and efficient. However, realising this potential requires more than just access to technology; it demands awareness, thoughtful integration and meaningful AI engagement by users.

To address this need, AI Samarth has developed a contextualised AI Literacy Curriculum Framework for Students and Teachers in India. In his Keynote address at the launch, Abhishek Singh, CEO, IndiaAI Mission and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), Govt. of India, said “The transformative and cross-cutting potential of AI will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in India. The multilingual content stack will be released as a public good in English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Odia over the next six months, with an intent to expand to additional regional languages subsequently. The content will be disseminated through digital platforms and cascaded training modules, in collaboration with mission-aligned implementation partners, state governments and online learning platforms across Bharat. In its first round of implementation, AI Samarth has partnered with six organisations to build AI Literacy for over 50 lakh (5 million) students, parents and teachers. Microsoft Certifications Top Entry-Level IT Salaries in India: CloudThat Survey

Bengaluru, India – May 14, 2025 – CloudThat, a leading provider of cloud training and consulting services, today released its inaugural IT Certifications and Salary Survey Report, the first of its kind in India. The report, surveying over 800 IT professionals across 25 states and 113 cities in India, highlights the critical role of certifications in career advancement, with Microsoft certifications being the leading choice among professionals.
The survey reveals that Microsoft certifications command an average entry-level salary of 9.1 lakhs, outpacing other technical credentials. Additionally, 42% of respondents plan to pursue Microsoft certifications in the coming year, with 57% currently pursuing Microsoft Azure certifications, underscoring their prominence in India’s thriving IT sector. These certifications equip professionals with in-demand skills for cloud computing, cybersecurity, and other high-growth fields.

The report shows that certifications significantly boost earnings across experience levels. In Tier I in cities like Bangalore, certified entry-level professionals earn up to 7.05 lakhs on average, compared to 4.8 lakhs for non-certified peers. The average salaries for certified mid-to-senior roles is 17 lakhs, a 48% increase. Higher up the ladder, managers with certifications are receiving nearly double the salaries compared to their non-certified colleagues, showing the increasing value of certifications over time.
