From Traditional to Modern Cooking: Why Rice Bran Oil is a Must-Try for Every Indian Home Cook

From Traditional to Modern Cooking

India is a land of diverse cultures and cuisines, but one thing that unites all households is the use of cooking oil. With a wide range of options available in the market, choosing the right cooking oil for your family’s health can be a daunting task. Rice bran oil, with its numerous health benefits, has emerged as a popular choice among health-conscious Indian households. It is suitable for traditional Indian dishes, Asian & Continental dishes, and dressings for salads.

Rice bran oil is a type of vegetable oil that is extracted from the outer layer of rice grains. It has gained popularity in recent years as a healthy cooking oil option due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. For India, rice bran oil will become an important part of many households.

Rice bran oil is rich in antioxidants, such as vitamin E and gamma oryzanol, which help to protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. This is important for maintaining good health as oxidative stress is a major cause of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Speaking at the recently held International Conference on Rice Bran Oil (ICRBO), Dr. Rohini Sharma, Ph. D. Food Science and Nutrition, Consultant Food Technologist, Consultant Nutritionist, and Life Coach said, “Rice Bran Oil is a very healthy oil and more people should know the benefits of using the Rice Bran Oil. Rice Bran Oil has a balanced fatty profile with PUFA and MUFA in the ratio of 1:1, and very low saturated fatty acids. It is rich in nutraceuticals – Oryzanol, tocopherol, and tocotrienols which are natural Antioxidants. Gamma-Oryzanol present in Rice Bran Oil reduces Bad Cholesterol (LDL) and maintains Good Cholesterol (HDL). Furthermore, rice bran oil has a high smoke point, which means that it can be used for high-temperature cooking, such as deep frying, as it remains stable and retains nutrients at high temperatures, ideal for cooking food in the Indian Kitchen. We suggest people shift to rice bran oil for daily cooking and make a healthier choice.”

Health Benefits of Rice Bran Oil

Rice bran oil is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that provide numerous health benefits. Here are some of the health benefits of rice bran oil

  •  Lowers Cholesterol Levels: Rice bran oil is rich in plant sterols, which have been shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in the blood. This helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  •  Improves Heart Health: The high levels of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in rice bran oil can help to reduce the risk of heart disease by improving blood lipid levels and reducing inflammation in the body.
  •  Helps with Weight Loss: Rice bran oil contains compounds that can help to boost metabolism and increase fat burning. This makes it a useful addition to a weight loss diet.
  •  Supports Brain Health: The vitamin E and gamma-oryzanol in rice bran oil have been shown to improve cognitive function and memory. This makes it a valuable addition to the diet, especially for older adults.
  •  Anti-inflammatory Properties: The high levels of antioxidants in rice bran oil can help to reduce inflammation in the body, which is a major cause of chronic diseases such as arthritis, diabetes, and cancer.

Adding to this, Dr. Sheryl Salis, Registered Dietician (RD), Certified Diabetes Educator, Insulin Pump Specialist, and Founder -of Nurture Health Solutions, said, “We recommend people to use Rice Bran Oil, as it is Made in India and ideally suited to our Indian palate. The National Institution of Nutrition (NIN), ICMR, WHO, and several heart organizations have regularly promoted the use of Rice Bran Oil. In clinical practice, we are witnessing a lot of young people suffering from diabetes and heart diseases. We are constantly copying Western countries and are not focusing on our own products like Rice bran oil, which offers immense health benefits and is ideal for Indian household daily usage. We recommend people to lead an active lifestyle and eat food cooked in rice bran oil to lead a healthy life.”

Adding to this Mr. P. Chandra Shekhara Reddy, Sr. Vice President, Sales & Marketing – Freedom Rice Bran Oil said, “According to experts, physically refined rice bran oil contains over 10,000+ parts per million (PPM) of Oryzanol. Oryzanol helps to reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the body by blocking the absorption of dietary cholesterol in the intestines. This helps to lower bad cholesterol levels and maintain good cholesterol levels in the body, which is essential for maintaining heart health. Also, tocopherol in rice bran oil is important because it can help to increase the oil’s antioxidant properties, making it even more beneficial for human health. Freedom Rice Bran Oil is also stable at high temperatures and has a neutral taste, making it the best choice for Traditional Indian Cooking. Rice bran oil is healthy oil suitable for the Indian household’s daily cooking needs. Therefore, we urge people to #Switch to Freedom for a healthy life.”

In conclusion, rice bran oil is an important cooking oil option for Indian families due to its high nutritional value and health benefits. Its antioxidant properties, unique fatty acid profile, and rich vitamin and mineral content make it a healthy choice for cooking. In India, where heart disease and diabetes are prevalent, switching to rice bran oil can be particularly beneficial. The high levels of antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamin E in rice bran oil make it a great choice for reducing the risk of heart disease and other chronic ailments.

AVPN highlights Axis Bank Foundation and ATE Chandra Foundation’s achievements within the climate action ecosystem

AVPN highlights Axis Bank Foundation

New Delhi, 16th  May 2023: Commemorating International Climate Day today, The Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) – Asia’s largest network of social investors – has launched two new climate impact videos featuring members Axis Bank Foundation and ATE Chandra Foundation. The videos have been launched as part of AVPN’s Climate Impact Leaders video series, an initiative of AVPN’s Climate Action Platform 2.0. The Climate Action Platform aims to drive Asian leadership in the global climate agenda, channel more resources into climate action, and accelerate the global transition to a resilient, sustainable, positive future for all.

The next set of Climate Impact Leader videos shares insights into climate best practices from Dhruvi Shah, CEO, Axis Bank Foundation and Gayatri Nair Lobo, ATE Chandra Foundation in generating positive climate impact.

In the third video, Gayatri shares how ATE Chandra Foundation is scaling climate-positive solutions with tremendous support from Governments and local communities. These long-term solutions are being worked on at the intersection of climate and livelihoods, with a focus on farmers. She shares a rare insight into the challenges that the Foundation faced while deploying these solutions, especially when it came to the water rejuvenation system that they had created to tackle the water crisis in Rajasthan – and how they started inculcating farmers’ feedback in developing unique conservation models and systems.

In the fourth video, Dhruvi sheds light on the inception of Axis Bank Foundation’s Sustainable Livelihoods Programme, which since 2010 has been supporting rural families especially those who are small and marginal farmers, to enhance their income. She urges climate actors to be present, open, and listening to partners on-ground, while also negotiating for better outcomes for the community. She ends the video by requesting a call for collaborative action, where she states that networks like AVPN provide an opportunity for organisations and people to come together to have the hard talk and walk the hard talk.

On the occasion of International Climate Day and the launch of the videos for the Climate Impact Leaders series, Naina Subberwal Batra, CEO, AVPN said, “We are proud to capture the journey of India’s changemakers who have embraced the fight against climate change and integrated positive climate action into their business models. What we can all learn from them are exemplary models of tackling climate change with an intersectional lens – as climate change is disproportionately impacting areas spanning from healthcare to poverty alleviation. We hope by sharing these stories and various programme outcomes, we will be able to urge organisations to integrate a climate lens across their business models”.

The first two videos launched as part of the series last month on Earth Day featured the inspiring work of two foundations – Raintree Foundation and Rainmatter Foundation. Over the next few months, AVPN will launch their last set of videos as part of the series, in hope of influencing greater participation of philanthropy in India’s climate landscape.

Coca-Cola India And Zepto Expand Collaboration to Recycle PET Bottles in India

May 16th, 2023: Coca-Cola India and Zepto announced the expansion of their successful, first-of-its-kind collaboration in India to reinforce their commitment to plastic circularity. The ‘Return and Recycle’ initiative was launched in November 2022 as a pilot project in select locations of Mumbai. The unique initiative established an organized process of collecting PET bottles with 100% traceability, to ensure effective plastic waste management. It received an overwhelming response from consumers with over 100kgs of PET bottles collected and recycled as a part of the 60-day pilot.

Zepto and Coca-Cola’s collaboration is driving the digitization of their collection strategy by leveraging e-commerce platforms. This move towards digitization not only makes the process more efficient but also raises consumer awareness about sustainable collection models, making them a key stakeholder in the journey towards sustainability.

The initiative will now be scaled with collection bins deployed across hundreds of Zepto delivery hubs in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune, and Kolkata.

Commenting on the expansion of the initiative, Abhishek Gupta, Chief Customer Officer Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, said, “The success of Coca-Cola’s partnership with Zepto has been characterized by strong synergies in sustainability and social responsibility. We are delighted to extend the partnership to other cities, continuing our efforts towards plastic circularity. With the ‘return and recycle’ initiative across India, we are furthering the company’s global goal of creating a world without waste.”

Coca-Cola India’s partnership with Zepto intends to create a circular economy for plastic by connecting all participants in the PET recycling value chain. Leveraging the Zepto two-wheeler distribution network, the “self-sustainable initiative” seeks to ‘collect’ empty PET bottles of any brand from consumers, which then goes to the recycler as a raw material The initiative also demonstrates Coca-Cola’s commitment towards the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission which promotes recycling as one of its core principles. It further aims to encourage its consumers to recycle PET by raising awareness on the importance of recycling and its positive impact on the environment.

Vinay Dhanani, Chief Operations Officer at Zepto, said, “This collaboration has been an exciting opportunity to demonstrate the potential of new-age e-commerce beyond business. We are proud to have built an agile and efficient last-mile network that seamlessly extends itself to innovative initiatives like this. Our aim is to constantly innovate and embed sustainable practices in all areas of operations at Zepto. Be it route optimization, EV or bicycle-led deliveries, sustainable packaging, or reducing waste, we are committed to reducing our footprint and sharing our vision with brands and the Government of India.”

Coca-Cola India and Zepto’s ‘Return and Recycle’ initiative aims to promote and build lasting sustainable behaviour and reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste through shared purpose. This programme further serves as a testimony of how joint brand collaborations can help in creating a culture of sustainability and responsible consumption.

14 year old boy with a rare disease of nerves Guillain Barre syndrome got new lease of life

15 May 2023: Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur is a leading healthcare provider with a tradition of care and innovation that makes this hospital a boon for patients in Central India. Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur , which handles critical patients, successfully treated yet another critically ill 14 year old boy. Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur again proved their mettle and saved the boy from being handicapped for the rest of life.

Master Pranav Thombare is a 14 year old boy living in Village near Akola. On the 3rd day after the Holi festival, he complained of weakness in his legs with pain. Thinking it to be a trivial complaint or the boy’s reluctance to go to school, parents sent him to school anyway and a few hours later they got a call from school that he had collapsed in his classroom and was unable to get up. Frantically, his parents went to see their only son and then to a local hospital where he was initially diagnosed with dehydration and syncope.

When he progressively worsened and started experiencing difficulty breathing, he was referred to Wockhardt hospitals Nagpur . Dr Amit Bhatti, who is the consultant neurologist and stroke specialist diagnosed him with a rare disease of nerves known as Guillain Barre syndrome aka GB syndrome in which there auto immune destruction of the myelin coating of nerves and sometimes even the peripheral nerves leading to inability of transmission of signals from brain to the muscles all over body.

When he came to hospital he was so weak, he could barely move his fingers and was not able to breath due to respiratory muscle paralysis. He was promptly intubated and put on a mechanical ventilator and was started on IVIG therapy which is immunoglobulin derived from pooled plasma of blood donors. To add to the complications, the patient had also developed an inability to swallow anything, even his own saliva, which led to development of aspiration pneumonia and sepsis.

Wockhardt Hospitals Nagpur multidisciplinary approach between neurology, intensive care and other departments , prompt initiation of therapy and with mechanical ventilation, he was initially stabilized and then over a period of next 4 weeks improved progressively where he is now independent for activities of daily living and able to walk with minimal support.

Dr Amit Bhatti said this is a very rare case but he is of the opinion that with good physiotherapy and neuro rehabilitation, he should be back to his previous physical level in a few months.

This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and treatment initiation and multidisciplinary approach between neurology, intensive care and physiotherapy departments for better recovery because delay in initiation of immunotherapy may lead to permanent damage to peripheral nerves which at times may even be permanent and life-threatening. And this is where the hospitals approach helps to treat the patient successfully.

Dr. Amit Bhatti is a virtuoso clinical neurologist with further specialization in Intervention Neurological procedures and Stroke. He is an expert in the comprehensive care of patients with brain stroke and diseases related to the blood vessels of the brain. Apart from stroke, he is an expert in the management of various types of headaches, epilepsy, and Neuroimmunological disorders. He has a sharp research acumen and has many international and national research articles to his credit including the pioneering work on Indian pediatric stroke treatment using mechanical thrombectomy and rescue Stenting for brain strokes in adults.
