India Fast Tracks Lakhanpur Coal Gasification Project to Strengthen Energy Security

Apr 6: With ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East raising concerns over global fuel supplies, India is taking decisive steps to safeguard its energy needs. One of the biggest challenges currently facing the country is ensuring a stable supply of oil and natural gas.

In a significant move, the Government of India is pushing ahead with a major coal gasification project in Lakhanpur, located in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district. The project recently crossed an important milestone with the signing of a land lease agreement between Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) and Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL).

The project, which involves an investment of around ₹25,000 crore, is expected to be completed within the next two years. Once operational, it will produce ammonium nitrate, a key chemical used in various industries.

Coal gasification is emerging as a critical strategy for India to reduce its dependence on imported fuels and make better use of its abundant coal resources. The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader push for energy self-reliance.

Back in 2020, the Centre had launched the National Coal Gasification Mission to promote cleaner and more efficient utilization of coal. The Lakhanpur project is expected to play an important role in advancing this vision.

As global uncertainties continue, such initiatives could help India build a more resilient and self-sufficient energy ecosystem.

Ducon Announces Advanced Solutions to Mitigate Air Pollution from Missile Interceptions

Business Wire India

Ducon Technologies (“Ducon”), a global leader in high-efficiency air pollution control and infrastructure related technologies, today announced solutions for the escalating environmental and public health crisis caused by high-altitude missile interceptions in the ongoing conflict in Iran.

When an air defense system successfully intercepts a missile, the immediate reaction is one of relief. A fireball in the sky represents a catastrophe averted on the ground. However, as the smoke clears, a different kind of threat begins its slow descent. While we celebrate the “kinetic kill,” we often ignore the “chemical spill” happening miles above our heads. In the current conflict involving Iran, the sheer scale of these interceptions is turning the sky into a reservoir of long-term environmental hazards.

Many long-range ballistic systems use highly volatile, toxic liquid propellants as fuel. The primary culprit is hydrazine and its derivatives, paired with oxidizers like nitrogen tetroxide. Upon interception, a colorless mist, exceptionally toxic to human health is generated and then decomposes into Nitrogen Dioxide, the notorious reddish-brown gas that is a primary component of industrial smog.

Tactical missiles use solid fuel grains containing aluminum powder and ammonium perchlorate. An interception shatters this fuel, creating thousands of pounds of microscopic Alumina particles and Hydrogen Chloride gas causing a regional acid rain event. This acid mist is highly corrosive, presenting an immediate respiratory threat and contributing to the acidification of soil and water resources over a vast area.

Beyond the fuel propellants, the missile structure itself contains heavy metals—lead, mercury, and cadmium—essential for electronics and guidance. These metals are vaporized by the interception energy into ultra-fine “metallic dusts.” These dusts are potent neurotoxins that settle onto agricultural land and enter the food supply, presenting a severe risk to cognitive development, particularly in children.

While the immediate visible signs of interception disappear, the chemical fallout creates a legacy of environmental accumulation that can persist for decades as these chemicals settle into the groundwater and soil in the interception zones, significantly elevating the long-term risk of liver, lung, and kidney cancer.

“We are seeing a new type of industrial-scale pollution happening in our skies,” said Aron Govil, CEO of Ducon. “We have seen reports of a persistent, caustic, dark haze—the ‘death cloud’—forming over major urban centers like Tehran and Haifa following interception waves and they represent severe health risks that lead to long-term carcinogenic and neurological damage. At Ducon, we have the technology to address these toxins at the source of human exposure.”

Ducon offers a multi-layered approach to neutralizing the invisible fallout of missile destruction: (i) Ducon’s proprietary Wet Scrubbers are engineered to remove over 99.9% of gaseous pollutants such as Nitrogen Dioxide and Hydrochloric Acid mist before they can cause respiratory failure or turn into regional acid rain; (ii) Ducon’s Venturi Scrubbers and High-temperature Baghouses are designed to capture sub-micron particles of alumina, lead, cadmium, and mercury thus preventing them from entering the food chain or being inhaled by local populations. (iii) Ducon provides advanced sensor networks capable of detecting specific chemical signatures of missile propellants, allowing municipalities to issue health advisories and deploy targeted remediation strategies.

The regions under constant interception activity must be treated as complex, accumulating monitoring zones. Ducon advocates for the deployment of advanced, real-time air quality monitoring networks, specifically tuned to detect the subtle signatures of hydrazine and specific metallic nanoparticles. Furthermore, decontamination protocols and long-term medical registries for the population of these areas are no longer optional.

Aron Govil further said, “With over 30,000 installations worldwide and a history dating back to 1938, Ducon remains at the forefront of environmental protection. As the ‘chemical spill’ in the sky grows, Ducon is ready to partner with international relief organizations and governmental agencies to deploy mobile and permanent air quality solutions to protect the millions of citizens living in the shadow of modern conflict.”

“Our goal is to ensure that the air we breathe remains safe, even when our skies are under threat; Air defense protects us today; Ducon ensures we are healthy enough to see tomorrow,” continued Mr. Govil.

A Partnership Beyond Borders: Amit Lohani of FIFI Bestowed with “Thailand’s Best Friend 2026” Award

Business Wire India

They say a true friend is someone who helps you grow, and in the world of international trade, few friendships are as fruitful as the one between India and Thailand. In a celebration of this enduring bond, Amit Lohani, the Founder Director of the Forum of Indian Food Importers (FIFI), was recently honored with the prestigious “Thailand’s Best Friend 2026” award. This accolade, presented by Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), recognizes Lohani’s tireless work in bringing the vibrant flavors of Thailand to Indian kitchens and dining tables.

A Global Stage for Local Impact

The award ceremony took place on March 11, 2026, against the bustling backdrop of THAIFEX – HOREC ASIA at Bangkok’s IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center. While 20 global leaders were recognized for their contributions to Thai trade, the spotlight on FIFI was particularly bright.

On behalf of the forum, Mr. Pankaj Singhal accepted the award on behalf of FIFI from Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, in the presence of Minister of Commerce Phumtham Wechayachai. The moment served as a testament to how FIFI—a non-profit voice for India’s food importers—has become a bridge between cultures and commerce.

Why This Matters

For Amit Lohani, this isn’t just another trophy for the shelf. It follows recent honors from the Australian and Italian governments, marking him as a key architect of India’s modern food landscape. As a “Friend of Thailand,” Lohani’s work goes beyond shipping crates. It’s about:

 * Navigating Regulations: Ensuring that high-quality Thai products meet India’s FSSAI standards.

 * Building Community: Supporting over 6,500 stakeholders and 1,600 brands globally.

 * Sustainable Growth: Aligning trade initiatives with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Indian government programs.

“I am deeply honored,” Lohani shared, “Echoing the Thailand Best Friend’s theme—’Once a Best Friend, Always a Partner’. This award reflects our commitment to making sure the Indian food business isn’t just growing, but thriving through high-quality, compliant, and diverse partnerships. Via FIFI we have supported over 6,500 stakeholders and 1,600 brands from more than 100 countries, fostering a vibrant food import ecosystem in India.”

A Growing Appetite for Collaboration

The sentiment is mutual. Suchira Panchana, Director of the Thai Trade Centre, noted that Lohani’s contributions have been “exemplary,” citing his dedication to the entire food ecosystem as a defining factor in their success within India.

Through FIFI’s advocacy and Lohani’s vision, the “Land of Smiles” and the “Land of Spices” are closer than ever—proving that in the world of food, the best ingredient is a great partner.
