Manipal Hospitals successfully performs Eastern India’s first AI-powered injectable wireless pacemaker insertion

New Delhi, 22 November 2024: Marking a transformative milestone in cardiac care, Manipal Hospitals, one of the largest healthcare networks in India announced the successful insertion of an AI-driven, wireless injectable pacemaker. Developed by Abbott, their Aveir Leadless pacemaker entered the Indian market a few days back. Notably, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria has become the first center in Eastern India to perform the procedure. This life-saving device was recently inserted in a 65-year-old patient’s heart, making them the first in this region to receive the futuristic pacemaker. Already in use across the United States and Europe, the innovative pacemaker provides Indian patients with a safer and less invasive alternative to traditional pacemakers for managing heart rhythm disorders.

The event was attended by eminent cardiologists from Manipal Hospitals, including Dr. P.K. These experts pointed to the increasing number of pacemaker insertion surgeries in India and how wireless pacemakers can be a better option for many. Mr. Rajesh Pareekh, Unit Head at Manipal Hospital Dhakuria, also attended the event emphasizing the hospital’s commitment to providing cutting-edge medical solutions.

According to the Journal of Cardiovascular Disease, nearly 40,000 people undergo pacemaker insertion surgery annually in India. The Aveir Leadless pacemaker only weighs 2.4 grams and uses nanotechnology to remain securely positioned within the heart. With a lifespan of 20-25 years, the device has a long life that’s almost three times longer than typical pacemakers (7-8 years) which reduces the need for pacemaker replacement. Besides, its non-magnetic design makes it immune to airport scanners, MRI machines, and high-voltage electrical currents ensuring that the patient’s day-to-day functionality remains uncompromised.

Dr. P.K. Hazra, Interventional Cardiologist, Manipal Hospital, Dhakuria explained the significance of the new device, “While the pacemaker is not rechargeable, it has a unique advantage. It can be upgradable from a single to a dual-chamber configuration, offering a versatile and long-term solution for patients. It can efficiently separate and regulate the right atrium and the right ventricle of the heart. This pacemaker not only eliminates the need for invasive surgery and external wires but also features Bluetooth-enabled technology, allowing for remote monitoring and adjustments. NXP Announces Industry-First Ultra-Wideband Wireless Battery Management System Solution

(NASDAQ: NXPI), the trusted partner for innovative solutions in the automotive market, has unveiled its new, industry-first wireless battery management system (BMS) solution with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) capabilities from one of the industry’s broadest UWB portfolios. The new UWB BMS solution marks the next step in overcoming development challenges including costly and complex manufacturing processes, accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

Wireless communication within battery packs enables robust and reliable transfer of battery cell information such as voltage and temperature measurements from one module to the battery management unit without the need for wiring. It helps to ensure optimal performance and prevent conditions that lead to premature failure or safety hazards.

NXP’s UWB wireless BMS technology decouples mechanical and electrical development, offering EV manufacturers increased flexibility, faster time to market and reduced development costs – while maintaining full scalability of the system across different platforms.

Leveraging wireless solutions minimizes the use of complex wiring harnesses in the battery pack, and reduces the need for error-prone manual effort during production, which makes the assembly of EVs more efficient and reduces overall lifecycle costs. Realizing wireless technology within the reflective enclosure of a battery pack is challenging. UWB uses high bandwidth pulses instead of a modulated carrier frequency (sinusoidal signal) as used in 2.4 GHz narrow-band, such as Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) based technologies. This provides higher resistance to reflections and frequency selective fading for more robust and reliable data transfer.

NXP’s Ultra-Wideband wireless battery management system solution is available for OEMs to start evaluation and development in Q2 2025.

The solution is part of NXP’s FlexCom chipset which supports wired and wireless technologies, providing OEMs and Tier-1-suppliers with greater flexibility in vehicle architecture and technology choices. Its common software architecture and safety libraries for both BMS configurations enables them to reuse software across different platforms, further reducing development efforts.

The NXP FlexCom BMS chipset also includes NXP’s recently announced MC33777 Battery Junction Box (BJB) IC, serving high voltage systems with accurate voltage, chassis isolation and current measurements.
