3 March 2023: The British Deputy High Commission Kolkata will host ‘Unplugged: Best of the UK’, a three-day photography exhibition in collaboration with Indo-British Scholars’ Association (IBSA) and Bengal Heritage Foundation (BHF) at ICCR, Kolkata from 10 to 12 March 2023.

The photography exhibition will showcase a wide array of visual narratives about the United Kingdom taken by people from Kolkata and London. We believe this pictorial confluence will further strengthen the people to people links between Bengal and Britain.

The ‘Best of the UK’ photography exhibition is part of the GREAT British Season that British Deputy High Commission Kolkata is hosting to celebrate the United Kingdom and India’s shared living bridge. We are organising an array of programs and events to showcase our past, present and future links in culture, education, sports, technology, and tourism as part of this season.

Mr. Peter Cook, Acting British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata said: “The Great British Photo Exhibition is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the strength of our shared heritage that lives on in the people of this great city. As a Bengali-born British Citizen, I can say with passion and some personal pride that our heritage is not only worthy of our past but also offers the promise of a prosperous partnership in the future. Thank you to our friends and partners at IBSA and BHF. Do come and see this fantastic exhibition.”

Mr. Subrata Paul, President, IBSA said: “Indo British Scholar’s Association (IBSA) is proud to partner with British Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, and Bengal Heritage Foundation, for hosting The Great British Photo Exhibition, on 10-12 March 2023. This one of its kind photography exhibition is celebrating the enduring relationship between UK, India and West Bengal. Photographs will evoke fond memories for people, who have connections with the U.K. and are visiting the exhibition. Landscapes, monuments, architecture, sports, and transport visuals of the U.K. will help people to reminiscence their stay in U.K. I wish the exhibition a great success.”

Mr. Suranjan Som, President, BHF said: “Photography has been a fascinating art and science for me, where one captures a moment in time, to cherish it forever. With the advent of digital, and now mobile, photography, in the past few years, science has been largely democratized, hence it is now the quality of content and artistry of the capturer that trumps. The United Kingdom provides a significant canvas of photographic opportunities from the rolling hills of the countryside to the bustling streets of the city. Every shot tells a unique story, and every photographer brings their own vision to the frame. Let’s showcase the beauty and diversity of this great nation through photography.”

Common breastfeeding problems and ways to tackle them

Dr. Kavita Pujar, Senior Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Kinder Women’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, Bengaluru

Childbirths aren’t as easy as it may sound. While the joy of bringing a child to life is priceless, the several health problems of the mother…sometimes life-threatening, must not be ignored. Postpartum complications can occur within weeks after childbirth or even months afterwards and may not always give warning signs. Call it sheer lack of awareness, the uterine contractions, fatigue and pain that the new mothers go through are often ignored or overlooked as signs of recovery instead of indications of postpartum complications, which thus, can lead to serious health issues. However, with proper guidance and regular check-ups, such complications can be taken care of and ensure a healthy recovery.

Symptoms of Postpartum Complications

For most women, recovery after labor and delivery of the child may be uneventful and normal. But for few others, it is important to keep a check on the following symptoms to reduce the risk factors which may eventually turn harmful for the new mother. It must be noted that most of the complications can be treated successfully if they are diagnosed early.

· Infections in the genital tract and urinary tract

· Heavy vaginal bleeding or formation of blood clots during bleeding

· Swelling or pus formation at the incision site of C-section delivery

· Persistent pain in the vagina

· Flu like symptoms or high fever with rapid heart rate

· Foul smelling vaginal discharge

· Body ache or tenderness and pain in the legs

· Soreness or pain in the breasts

· Problem faced during breastfeeding, clogging of milk ducts

· Pain during urination

· Depressive mood or facing “baby blues” that lasts more than few days

· Digestive issues, constipation

· High blood pressure

· Seizures

· Trouble in breathing or complications due to anesthesia

· Headache with vision changes or problems

· Trouble in falling asleep

· Discomfort during sexual intercourse

· Other pre-existing chronic diseases

When should you seek medical help?

There can be few instances wherein seeking medical help must not be compromised. These are:

· When you suddenly experience heavy blood loss

· When there is persistent and severe headache along with nausea, vomiting or blurred vision

· You find it difficult to take care of the baby

· When you have pain in your upper abdomen or feel tenderness within 48 hours of delivering the baby

· When you hallucinate or panic too often or try to harm yourself

Ways to tackle Postpartum complications

Nothing should be more important than prioritizing your postpartum recovery and health. Postpartum recovery is an ongoing process and must be initiated before childbirth itself. Knowing about the possible risk factors, ways to take care of yourself and the baby, need for any specific care…every step will help in tackling the problems better. Keep a check on the signs and symptoms of any complications in the first three weeks after childbirth and consult your doctor immediately if your health deteriorates. A complete and detailed evaluation of the problems help in determining the treatment process better.

During consultations with your doctor, seek advice on issues like using contraception and time to plan the next baby, factors that can lead to extreme fatigue, right time to start exercising, regularizing sleep pattern, resuming sex life and ways to check abdomen and vagina to check for any uncalled-for symptoms.

Joint Replacement- Precision matters the most

Dr Ramneek Mahajan, Senior Director and Head, Joint Replacement unit (Knee and Hip), Max SMART Super Specialty Hospital, Saket , New Delhi

Why Knee replacement?

– Knee replacement surgery is a treatment for pain and disability in the knee. The most common condition that results in the need for knee replacement surgery is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the breakdown of joint cartilage. Damage to the cartilage and bones limits movement and may cause pain. People with severe degenerative joint disease may be unable to do normal activities that involve bending at the knee, such as walking or climbing stairs, because they are painful. The knee may swell or “give-way” because the joint is not stable. The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments. In determining whether a knee replacement is right for you, an orthopaedic surgeon assesses your knee’s range of motion, stability and strength. X-rays help determine the extent of damage.

Now, with an advancement of technology and innovation- Robotic joint replacement surgery is a new and exciting option for those needing hip or knee replacements. This new technology revolutionizes the way we think about joint replacement surgeries. Using robots to increase precision and accuracy during surgeries, results in shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, quicker recoveries, and improved outcomes for patients. The extra precision enabled by the robotic assisted technology should also prevent surgeons having to do redo hip and knee replacement operations that don’t work out the first time.

Myth -Robot will perform the surgery independently, but the actual fact, at no point the robot performs the surgery independently. It only assists the surgeon to perform the surgery with precision. It helps in creating precise bone cuts and implant alignment for patients Without the surgeon’s guidance, the robot cannot either move or make its own decisions.

Robotic joint replacement surgery is procedure that can be performed with minimal incisions, resulting in minimal scarring. It is performed using a computer-like electronic operating station where the surgeon operates a specialized camera and robotic arms to carry out the operation. Before the surgery, a CT scan is used to produce a 3D model of the patient’s knee. This helps the surgeon plan the surgery and also place the implant with the utmost accuracy. During the surgery, the robotic arm is used to precisely make cuts which are first planned on basis of 3D reconstructed CT images obtained pre surgery, as it works in designated safe boundary under control of surgeon holding the robotic arm it protects the surrounding tissue from unintentional damage. The surgery usually takes less than two hours for both knee joint and patients can typically go home in a day or two.

In Max SMART Super Speciality, Saket, MAKO system uses Triathlon Knee System (Stryker) which has 99.7% survivorship, rapid abandonment of crutches, lesser Anterior Knee pain and reduction in physiotherapy sessions. Robotic surgery preserves all the natural structures of the joint (less tissue damage), ensures minimal pain and early recovery

Languages grow on the basis of its utility and need: Prof. Dwivedi

Languages grow on the basis of its utility and need: Prof. Dwivedi New Delhi, 03 March: “Languages develop based on their utility, necessity, and ability. If our languages are limited today, we cannot put the responsibility on anyone else. Languages and mothers are lauded by their children. For the development of languages, we have to decide such ways, through which languages can progress.”

These views were expressed by Prof. (Dr.) Sanjay Dwivedi, Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication during the two-day national seminar organized on the topic ”BhartiyaBhasha aur Bhartiya Gyan Parampara” under the joint aegis of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti (Ministry of Education, Government of India) and Arundhati Bhartiya Gyan Parampara Kendra, PGDAV College (Evening). On this occasion the principal of the college, Prof. Ravindra Kumar Gupta, Prof. Umapati Dixit from Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra, JP Singh, Assistant Registrar of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, and Prof. Harish Arora, coordinator of the seminar, was present.

Prof. Dwivedi stated that the time has come where we should encourage and respect our languages. Hindi and other Indian languages are gaining strength and recognition on a global platform. By speaking Hindi, the country’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is ruling the hearts of the world.

During the seminar, Prof. Ravindra Kumar Gupta, the college’s principal, stated that Indian words are common in both Bhartiya Bhashayen and Bhartiya Gyan Parampara. If we want to know and understand India, we must first understand the Bhartiya Gyan Parampara. According to Prof. Umapati Dixit, Bhartiya Bhashayen and Bhartiya Gyan Parampara are as pure, flowing, intact, and uninterrupted as the Ganges. Language, like the Ganges, flows in its own way, assimilating culture and civilization.

On this occasion, Assistant Registrar of Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, J.P. Singh said that we work for the promotion and development of languages. Languages are carriers of culture and their protection is necessary. As a guest speaker, Prof. Rachna Vimal of Satyavati College’s Department of Hindi stated that every countryman should learn an Indian language other than his mother tongue.

The two-day National Seminar featured five sessions that were successfully organized. Prof. Harish Arora, the seminar’s coordinator, stated that India has always been superior in the field of knowledge. The Vedas were written in India at a time when most people did not know how to read or write. This is why India is known as Vishwaguru.ᐧ

New Delhi, March 3, 2023: Broadband India Forum (BIF), an independent policy forum and knowledge-based think-tank organised a Round Table Discussion with Prof. N Yoshino, Adjunct Professor at GRIPS and Professor Emeritus (Economics) at Keio University, and former Dean/CEO of the Asian Development Bank Institute championing G20 goals on “The Spill over Effects of Digital Infrastructure and Financing” to address the challenges of attracting private investment in ICT infrastructure development.

Renowned Economist and proponent of the spill over theory, Professor Yoshino made a keynote presentation at the Round Table Discussion attended by dignitaries like Shri S.K. Mishra, Advisor (Finance), DoT; Shri Sanjeet Singh, Sr Advisor, NITI Aayog and Shri Vivek Narayan, DDG (Data Services), DoT and many other dignitaries from the Industry & Think Tank. The proposed mechanism would enable joint involvement and participation of the Government and potential private investors in sharing revenues accruing out of the use of Digital Infrastructure. This would be ploughed back for future growth of the sector. Prof Yoshino’s studies highlighted the spill over effects in Japan, where estimates of spillover effects were as high as 66%. A similar study is proposed to be carried out for India.

Outlining his proposed objectives for India, Prof Yoshino said “that the Spill over effects of ICT infrastructure on taxes obtained by the government could result in increase the rate of return by upto 15% for the investors. This innovative proposal has the potential to revolutionize the investment landscape in India’s digital infrastructure sector and will make it sustainable going forward.” He also said that it will be interesting to see how policymakers respond to this idea “ Overall, the Round Table Discussion with Prof. Yoshino provided valuable insights into the opportunities and challenges of financing digital infrastructure, and the critical role that private sector participation can play in driving the growth and development of digital infrastructure in a sustainable manner.

Mr. TV Ramachandran, President, BIF, said “As India moves forward with the goal to transform itself to a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy, the need for large investments in all types of digital infrastructure is imperative. Digital Infrastructure needs to increase several fold in next five years to help achieve the goal of trebling GDP to USD 7.5 trillion over the next 5 years.” The Round Table Discussion held today brought together all the key stakeholders from Government, Industry etc. to deliberate on some innovative concepts that shall help provide the Government sufficient impetus to take up the agenda of accelerated growth of digital infrastructure in the country forward in the quest for finding new ways to achieve Broadband for All and Digital Inclusivity.
