GITAM’s Homegrown Compost Pelletization Technique Empowers 250+ Andhra Farmers

GITAM’s Homegrown Compost Pelletization Technique Empowers

Hyderabad, 24 April 2023: Food insecurity is a global crisis today. Besides the threat to farmers’ livelihood and agriculture, a bigger problem for India is loss and wastage, with India ranking 107 out of 121 countries, in the 2022 Global Hunger Index. Working to address the crisis in farm livelihood and food wastage, GITAM (Deemed to be University) is empowering local farmer communities in Andhra Pradesh and helping them develop entrepreneurial skills, while upcycling the food waste via a unique compost pelletization project. Having received a grant of close to INR 40 lakhs from the Science for Equity Empowerment and Development (SEED) Division under the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India), the project tackles the dual issues of food waste and availability of quality agricultural compost for farming.

It aims to uplift the economic status of farmers by providing them with training in producing compost pellets — made by compressing composted food waste into small pellets, making them easy to handle and transport. The use of leftover food as a sustainable and nutrient-rich fertilizer has the potential to reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers, which negatively influence soil quality, leading to soil degradation and deterioration. Additionally, this project addresses food waste, a significant concern in India, where over 67 million tonnes of food is wasted every year. By converting food waste into compost, the project promotes a circular economy and reduces the environmental impact of food waste.

Having already conducted campaigns in Srikakulam and Vizianagaram, the varsity has collaborated with local farmer associations to create awareness among more than 250 farmers and to train 100 farmers in the production of compost pellets. The training involves preparing the compost and converting it into pellet form using scientific methods. This training is critical to ensure the quality of the product, which is essential for the project’s success.

The project is led by Prof. N. Srinivas, Principal Investigator and Prof. Ch. Ramakrishna and Dr. K. Suresh Kumar (Co-PI), Department of Environmental Science, GITAM School of Science, who said, “We are delighted to empower the farmer communities through this project. The project helps in waste management and creates sustainable entrepreneurship among the farmers. We are confident that the project will have a significant impact on the lives of farmers.”

The project uses leftover food, highly nutrient-dense in proteins, lipids, carbs, and other macro and microelements, as a fertilizer. The food waste is sent to an organic digestion machine, which converts it into compost within 24 hours. Such a compost digester facility is available at the university’s Vizag campus, which also helps demonstrate the production process to potential beneficiaries.

The compost quality is tested in a laboratory, and organic agents are added to enrich it and increase its value. At present, the research team is collecting feedback from the farmers to fortify the material with nutrients specific to their requirements. Finally, the compost is turned into pellets using a pellet maker, which increases its marketability by extending its shelf life and making it easier to store and transport.

The project is ongoing till August this year, but GITAM (Deemed to be University) plans to continue and expand the project to urban areas, where the demand for good quality manure is high, and urban gardening is catching up.

The project has received support from various stakeholders, including the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), farmer associations, and temples. In particular, temples can benefit from the pelletization of compost, which can be stored for an extended period and used as required to maintain their garden’s nutritional content.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary to Govt, Ministry of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications Department, Govt. of Telangana said, “Telangana is witnessing a Yellow revolution with the growth in Edible oil production. The Government is continuously focusing on building Agri infrastructure in the state and 60% of the Government budget is on Agri growth. We have offered direct benefits to farmers with Rythu Bandhu and crop insurance benefits through Rythu Bima. We have set up Agri University for research and development. The Government is always encouraging industry and has a unique platform TS-IPass to facilitate entry into the state. A few years ago we had a problem of plenty with Rice production but we have now transferred about 20L hectares of land for the cultivation of oil palm. With this, Telangana has the largest area under oil production. This offers great economic benefits by reducing the country’s import dependency on edible oils and fuelling growth. We have set up special food processing zones in Telangana, and offer the best infrastructure and support systems for growth. Telangana is strategically located in heart of the country and can be easily accessed with logistic connectivity. I am delighted to see such a huge gathering of Edible oil stalwarts and it’s an honour that such a prestigious conference is being organized in Hyderabad”

Lifetime achievement awards were presented to industry veterans for their contribution to the identification, research, and promotion of Rice Bran Oil. Mr. O. P. The government is increasing excise duties on some edible oils to encourage the use of domestic oils. Rice Bran oil, with all its benefits, can help bridge the gap as it has a huge potential. In fact, in the recent budget, a lot of emphasis was made on nutrition security. Edible Oils are a very important source of nutrition. Even historically, oils were a main source of nutrition in India. Already, the fortification of rice with iron, folic acid, and B12 for school children is being done. Research organizations should focus on identifying ways to enhance the nutritional value of edible oils. FSSAI should set standards to ensure the implementation and production of fortified edible oils. India also witnesses a lot of adulteration in food products, this needs to be stopped. Consumers should be educated about the health benefits of edible oils like Til, Groundnut, and rice bran oil. The best way forward for India is to increase oil cultivation, increase extraction, and spread the education about benefits of Indian oils to increase consumption, this will help reduce the price and enhance the consumption of Rice Bran Oil.”

Mohammed Siraj is making the difference for RCB in TATA IPL 2023: Irfan Pathan

24 April 2023  After watching two contrasting humdingers in Lucknow and Mumbai on Sensational Saturday, the TATA IPL is set for two mouth-watering contests on Super Sunday.

In a battle of royals on Sunday, Royal Challengers Bangalore will be hosting Rajasthan Royals in their ‘Green Game’ at M Chinnaswamy in the day match. The focus from South India will then shift to East India, where Kolkata Knight Riders take on Chennai Super Kings in the evening match of the doubleheader.

Having watched their team win their previous game, away from home, under the leadership of acting skipper Virat Kohli, Bengaluru fans will be hoping that their adopted son leads RCB in this special encounter. RCB put up a clinical show against Punjab Kings in their last game as their top three Faf du Plessis, Virat Kohli, and Glenn Maxwell put up an exhibition of stroke play in Mohali. However, it was their star pacer Mohammed Siraj who stole the show with his fiery bowling effort against PBKS. The India speedster produced his best bowling figures in Mohali and ran through Punjab’s batting line-up.

Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has lavished praise upon Siraj for bowling with renewed vigor in TATA IPL 2023.

Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Irfan Pathan said, “Mohammad Siraj has bowled excellently in the powerplay this season for RCB. He’s really making a difference for them. There is a big and positive difference in his bowling compared to last year. That is why his responsibility has increased being the premier seamer in the team.”

The second match of the day will be held in the City of Joy where an upbeat CSK faces the KKR challenge at Eden Gardens. The Yellow Brigade will be hoping to win that game and get those two vital points.

CSK are once again being led brilliantly by their skipper MS Dhoni and the designated Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army is marshaling his troops well.

Former India cricketer Krisnamachari Srikkanth has hailed the former India captain for instilling confidence in his teammates which is doing wonders for the team. He even cited the example of senior India cricketer Ajinkya Rahane who is batting with renewed energy in this TATA IPL.

Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, K Srikkanth said, “MS Dhoni trusts his teammates, and that is the reason he backs them to give their best. There are many such case studies, and the latest one is that of Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane himself admitted that Dhoni only asked him to enjoy his game. And then everyone knows what Rahane did after going in the field.”

In two super exciting matches on Saturday, Gujarat Titans prevailed over Lucknow Super Giants by 7 runs in a nail-biter. Hardik Pandya led the defending champions from the front and slammed a vital half-century under pressure. Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif lauded Hardik for his captain’s knock as he understood the complexity of the pitch.

Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Md Kaif said, “Hardik played an excellent inning under pressure. He came at number three only because he wanted to play till the end. After struggling in the beginning, Hardik, playing freely in his style, made the first fifty of the season. He knew that it was necessary for him to stay on the wicket because if a new batsman came in the last minute, he could not play the shots.”

In the second match of the day, young England all-rounder Sam Curran played a captain’s knock and guided Punjab Kings to a memorable win at Wankhede against a dominant Mumbai Indians side.

Curran’s blistering half-century in the slog overs along with other cameos from the middle order made the difference for the Kings. Hailing Curran for his all-around performance in the game, former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh said the team looks strong due to players like Curran.

Speaking on Star Sports Cricket Live, Harbhajan Singh said, “Sam Curran has handled the captaincy well in Shikhar’s absence. Along with the ball, he also looked impressive with the bat. Punjab team looks strong because of players like Sam.”

Re Sustainability partners with National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) for World Earth Day seminar on hazardous waste management

India, April 24, 2023: To celebrate World Earth Day, Re Sustainability (ReSL), the leading provider of comprehensive environmental management services in Asia, collaborated with the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to organize a seminar on April 21 that focused on the challenges and opportunities associated with hazardous waste management. The seminar took place at the Engineering Staff College of India, Gachibowli, Hyderabad where experts and stakeholders from across the country discussed the pressing issue of hazardous waste management and shared their insights and experiences on the latest advancements in waste management practices, including hazardous waste management, resource recovery, circular economy initiatives, and more.

The keynote speakers included Mr. M. Goutham Reddy (MD, ReSL), Prof. P. G. Sastry (Director, ReSL), Dr. P.V.R. Subrahmanyam (Dy Director & Head (Retd.) NEERI), Mr. Arup Kumar Mishra (Chairman, Assam Pollution Control Board), Dr. Prasantha Gargava (MS, CPCB), Dr. Atul Narayan Vaidya (Director, NEERI), Dr. K. Srinivas (Vice President, ReSL), Mr. Mukesh Sinha (Dalmia Cements), Mr. B. Vinod Babu (Scientist F, CPCB) and Prof. Ligy Philip (Dean Planning, Dept. Civil Engg., IIT Madras).

Re Sustainability has always been committed to environmental sustainability, and its efforts towards marking Earth Day are no exception. The seminar was aligned with the theme of World Earth Day, “Invest in Our Planet,” emphasizing the critical role that hazardous waste management plays in environmental protection. It ran through three technical and information-intensive sessions.

1. Current practices in hazardous waste management

2. Circular economy opportunities in hazardous waste management

3. New developments in hazardous waste management- towards sustainable growth

One of the major needs identified was the facilitation of resource waste recovery and transformation of the market by promoting substantial utilization and supplementary use of fuels. However, the challenges discussed during the seminar included funding deficiency, lack of focus on waste minimization, and the need for corrective actions to measure performance. The importance of waste minimization was emphasized, and industries were urged to start taking it seriously. Another significant issue addressed was the prevention of groundwater contamination through sustainable treatment and aquifer remediation. The role of technology in remediation, such as soil retorting and mercury-contaminated site treatment, was also highlighted. Proper enforcement of waste management regulations was stressed as a critical need to ensure effective and sustainable waste management practices.

The event culminated in an engaging Q&A session that covered mapping unregulated waste, the cost of remediation, and the quantum of waste generation, acknowledging that while it is not possible to regulate the entire waste, efforts must be made to reduce waste and ensure proper treatment.

Mr. Goutham Reddy, MD at ReSL, said, “I am grateful to all the dignitaries and mentors present here who have guided me in my journey in the waste management Industry. The evolution of hazardous waste management has been a long and challenging journey, and the US played a significant role in shaping it through the Resource Conservation Recovery Act of 1976. India recognized hazardous waste management early on, but progress was slow due to the lack of infrastructure and regulation. However, debates and discussions started happening in the late 90s, and one of the crucial debates was about the materials to be used in disposal facilities. The definition of hazardous waste has always been a matter of debate worldwide, starting from the very definition of waste itself. We must work together to find innovative solutions that are sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible.”
