How children fend off colds in the first three years of life, Research finds out

How children fend

Anyone who has had children remembers how many colds they got during their first three years of life. Whether novel respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2 or routine respiratory viruses, they lack repeated exposures that provide long-term immune protection. Nevertheless, they manage to recover remarkably well. How they do so has remained elusive, however.

Now, a team of scientists led by Columbia University in collaboration with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and others has identified what they believe could be the mechanism by which children recover from colds.

Their findings were published recently in the prestigious journal Nature Immunology.

The scientists, led by Prof. Donna L. Farber from Columbia University and Prof. Tomer Hertz from Ben-Gurion University, were given novel access to 63 pediatric organ donors, aged 0-13: 60 donors who died of non-infectious causes and 3 donors who died with ongoing symptomatic respiratory infection representing a racially and ethnically diverse population. The scientists then investigated immune cells in the lungs and lung-associated lymph nodes.

They identified bronchus-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) – a novel immunological site, which develops during infancy and can be found around airways during childhood. While this has been previously demonstrated in mice, this study was the first to show that BALT exists in humans. The study found that BALT starts to decline around age 4 or 5 and are replaced by memory T cells. The BALT structures promote germinal center formation, B cell differentiation, class switching, and somatic hypermutation, which, in turn, promotes immune protection.

The Hertz lab used a novel antibody profiling assay to reveal distinct specificity profiles for antibodies produced in the lung and BALT compared to those in plasma of young children (1-3yrs). BALTs were enriched with antibodies against common respiratory viruses, while serum antibodies primarily targeted childhood vaccines and herpes viruses. These results suggest that BALT antibodies were secreted by local plasma cells in the lung and lung lymph nodes, independently of serum antibodies.

“There are major implications for promoting respiratory immunity through vaccines. The presence of BALT in young children suggests that intranasal administration of vaccines may be particularly effective in children when priming outside lymphoid organs can occur. Moreover, induction of BALT could also be targeted in adults. Certain experimental vaccines were shown to induce BALT in adult mice and correlated with robust protection against bacterial and viral respiratory pathogens and could be targeted in future vaccines where systemic administration does not prevent infection or illness,” the researchers wrote.

Additional researchers include: Rei Matsumoto, Joshua Gray, Ksenia Rybkina, Rebecca S. Guyer, David Chen, Thomas J. Connors, and Peter A. Sims of Columbia University, Hanna Oppenheimer, Lior Levy, and Lilach M. Friedman of Ben-Gurion University, Muhammad Khamaisi and Uri Hershberg of the University of Haifa, Wenzhao Meng, Aaron M. Rosenfeld, Marissa Bradley and Eline T. Luning Prak of the University of Pennsylvania, and Mark A. Atkinson, Todd M. Brusko, and Maigan Brusko of the University of Florida.

Listicle: Zero-Brokerage: Unlocking Trading Benefits, Amplifying Profits

Introduction:

In recent years, the financial industry has witnessed a paradigm shift in the way people invest and trade in the stock market. One of the most significant transformations has been the introduction of zero-brokerage platforms. Traditionally, investors were subject to high brokerage fees that ate into their profits. However, with the advent of zero-brokerage, investors can now enjoy a range of benefits that can amplify their profits, thanks to platforms like Sho

What is Zero-Brokerage?

Zero-brokerage is a new-age trading model that allows investors to buy and sell securities without incurring any brokerage fees. In traditional brokerage systems, investors were charged a percentage of their transaction value or a fixed fee per trade. These fees often accumulated over time, making it expensive for frequent traders or investors dealing with a large number of shares.

Shoonya by Finvasia, Groww, etc., are some zero-brokerage platforms which have disrupted this traditional model by eliminating brokerage fees altogether. Instead of charging commission fees, these platforms may generate revenue through other means, such as interest on cash balances, offering premium services. The concept of zero-brokerage has been made possible largely due to advancements in technology and increased competition in the financial industry.

Advantages of Zero-Brokerage

  1. Cost-Effective Trading

The most apparent advantage of zero-brokerage platforms is the cost-effectiveness they offer to traders. With no brokerage fees to worry about, investors can execute trades more frequently without the fear of diminishing profits. This is especially beneficial for day traders and active investors who rely on quick buy and sell decisions to capitalize on short-term price movements.

  1. Increased Profit Margins

A simple top of the mind calculation would show that the profit margin is highest, where the cost of transacting is lowest. By eliminating brokerage fees completely across every asset class, trading platforms like Shoonya by Finvasia are disrupting the new age of trading. These platforms enable investors to retain a more significant portion of their profits. Whether you are a seasoned trader or a beginner just starting out, every dollar saved on commissions can add up over time, amplifying your overall gains. The best way to visualize your total cost for any transaction, is to use the very first calculator on Shoonya called ‘Equity’: https://shoonya.com/calculators

  1. Accessibility

Zero-brokerage platforms have democratized investing, making it more accessible to a broader range of people. Shoonya by Finvasia and Angel One are some fine examples of how AI can be leverage to facilitate hassle-free trading by reducing barriers to entry, thus enabling individuals with smaller capital to participate in the stock market without worrying about the high costs associated with brokerage fees. This inclusivity has opened up investment opportunities to a new generation of investors and has fostered financial literacy.

  1. Diversification

With zero-brokerage, investors are more inclined to diversify their portfolios without the concern of excessive costs. Diversification is a fundamental strategy to manage risk and optimize returns in the financial markets. Platforms like Shoonya by Finvasia, Zerodha, Upstox, Angel One, Groww, etc. empower investors to build diversified portfolios, incorporating various asset classes and sectors, which can lead to more stable and robust investment outcomes.

  1. Flexibility in Trading

Zero-brokerage platforms often come equipped with user-friendly interfaces and advanced trading tools. These features provide investors with greater flexibility in executing their trades and managing their investments. Groww, Shoonya by Finvasia, and other such players help traders make informed decisions swiftly by providing them with real-time market data, research, and analysis tools.

  1. Learning and Experimentation

For novice investors, zero-brokerage platforms offer an excellent opportunity to learn and experiment with trading strategies without the fear of incurring high costs. Trading companions like Shoonya by Finvasia allow beginners to gain hands-on experience in the stock market, understand risk management, and fine-tune their trading techniques before committing significant capital.

  1. Transparency

With traditional brokerage systems, investors often had to deal with hidden fees and complex commission structures. Zero-brokerage platforms, however, operate on a transparent model, providing clarity to investors on their costs and charges. The transparency offered by the likes of Upstox, Angel One, and Shoonya by Finvasia fosters trust between the platform and its users, promoting long-term relationships.

Conclusion:

Zero-brokerage has ushered in a new era of trading, where investors can unlock various benefits that were once reserved for the privileged few. From cost-effective trading and increased profit margins to accessibility and flexibility, zero-brokerage platforms have revolutionized the way people approach the stock market. As this trend continues to gain momentum, more and more investors are likely to embrace this new model, driving further innovation and competition in the financial industry. However, it is crucial for investors to exercise due diligence, carefully review the terms and conditions of the platform, and assess the other services offered to ensure a comprehensive and reliable trading experience.

Commentary on International Youth Day 2023

By Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services

In a bid to empower the budding generations, International Youth Day is observed worldwide on the 12th of August. Enhancing education and employment opportunities is one of the major concerns for countries and economies. With tech-fused roles gaining momentum, there are plenty of success avenues for the youth to excel in, provided they are well-prepared for by both businesses, policy-makers, strategists, and all stakeholders involved.

Digitization, of late, has been so rapid that being merely tech-savvy hardly cuts it anymore. Even in our everyday lives, we must understand technology to take its assistance and go about our days. Imagine being someone whom this tech revolution relies on. Today, tech professionals fuel products, industries, and economies. Underscoring the importance of digital skills, a report in 2021 suggested that India would need about nine times more tech workers by 2025 to sail through digital transformation. It was also noted that an average tech worker in the country would need to learn seven new technical skills to thrive. With a couple more years to take stock of said predictions, a few tech talent trends are too clear to miss.

Accelerated by the pandemic, technology has continued to penetrate various sectors and industries. Leaders are becoming increasingly eager to harness the full potential of tech and expand business models and product offerings. Young tech professionals are at the very frontline of this new vigor in the market infused by innovative and creative approaches to problem-solving. From IT/ITes to essentially non-tech domains such as retail, manufacturing, healthcare, education, eCommerce, BFSI and more are going bullish on tech hiring, causing the demand for tech talent to spike and the gap between demand and supply to widen further.

While it’s great news for tech students, aspirants, and professionals, it also necessitates certain steps they must take to make the most of this tech-dependent talent landscape. The age of hyper-disruption and automation makes it inevitable for the youth to upskill in various domains to protect their careers. It has been observed that digital skills turn obsolete every 2.5 years. Areas like Big Data Analytics, AI/ML, Full Stack, DevOps, Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, etc. are teeming with opportunities for skilled professionals who are readily deployable. To leverage these opportunities, one must upskill constantly and tirelessly.

While mastery of niche tech skills is non-negotiable, ideal digital professionals must possess a portfolio that also encompasses a range of behavioral skills deemed mandatory for long-term success. Skills like Creative Thinking, Communication, Problem Solving, Eagerness to Learn, Adaptability, etc. are some of the must-acquire strengths to make a mark in any industry and role.

Hindalco, Texmaco enter into a strategic alliance to make aluminium rail wagons and coaches

Hindalco, Texmaco enter

11th August, 2023, Mumbai/ Kolkata Hindalco Industries Ltd., the world’s largest aluminum rolling and recycling company, and Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd., a specialized engineering company have entered into a strategic alliance to develop and manufacture world-class aluminum rail wagons and coaches that will help Indian Railways achieve its emission goals and bolster operating efficiency.

Indian Railways has launched “Mission 3000 MT” with a target of doubling freight capacity to reach 3,000 million tons by 2027 through augmentation of rolling stock, with the objective of achieving 45% market share in freight. To meet this ambitious target, the Railways is actively seeking to improve wagon design, and inviting wagon manufacturers to contribute their own designs to enhance overall capacity and the life of railway assets.

Recognizing these developments in the Railways, Hindalco and Texmaco have joined hands to explore opportunities, where Hindalco will provide profiles, sheets, and plates of its unique aluminum alloys, along with fabrication and welding expertise. The company’s in-house aluminum freight rake launched last year is 180 tons lighter and offers 19% higher payload to tare weight ratio, consumes less energy with relatively negligible wear and tear. Texmaco, being an expert in manufacturing freight cars for 80 years, will bring in technical expertise and be responsible for design, setting up the factory, and production line, and providing skilled workers.

Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries, said, “With launch of India’s first aluminium rake, we have demonstrated the benefits of higher payload and significant CO2 reduction that aluminium rakes offer. This partnership will further strengthen our role in enhancing the value proposition for the freight industry as well as for passenger mobility, while helping the Railways achieve its net zero objectives.”

Mr. Indrajit Mookerjee, Vice Chairman, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd. stated “This valuable partnership will go a long way in creating innovative and sustainable products further reinforcing our commitment towards reducing the industry’s carbon footprint and driving a positive environmental impact.”

These substantial gains have encouraged Hindalco and Texmaco to go full throttle at pursuing an Atmanirbhar Bharat dream and help the Railways, which is in the throes of a massive upgradation in both basic infrastructures such as building gleaming new stations with modern amenities as well as state-of-the-art coaches and rapid expansion in the metro rail network.

Mr. Sudipta Mukherjee, Deputy Managing Director, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Ltd. added “This partnership holds tremendous potential in supporting the Indian Railways in its pursuit of the introduction of efficient rolling stock with a lesser carbon footprint.”

An indigenous facility that can make high-quality aluminium wagons, coaches, large containers, and components will greatly supplement the Central Government’s fast-paced development of dedicated freight corridors that aims to boost efficiency and reduce freight tariffs.

Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai Conducts Fun-Filled Activities To Mark National Organ Donation Day

Medicover Hospitals,

Navi Mumbai: Organ donation is an immensely noble act that has the power to save and transform lives. By willingly donating one’s organs, individuals demonstrate their selflessness and compassion toward those in need. The decision to donate organs not only gives hope to patients waiting for a transplant but also brings solace to their families who are desperately seeking a miracle. To commemorate National Organ Donation Day, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai organized interesting activities like fashion shows and live music bands. The chief guests of honor were the Kidney and Liver organ donors who had given a “Gift of Life “ to their loved ones.

As per data released by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) for the year 2022, Telangana has stood at the number one position in terms of the number of deceased organ donors as well as in the number of deceased organ transplants. The number of deceased organ donors in Telangana in 2022 was 194, which is the highest in the country; this was followed by Tamil Nadu – 156, Karnataka – 151, Gujarat – 148, and Maharashtra – 105. In terms of deceased donor transplants in 2022, Telangana tops the chart with 655 transplants followed by Tamil Nadu – 553, Karnataka – 435, Gujarat – 399, and Maharashtra – 305. Organ donation is life-altering and gaining pace across the country.

The act of organ donation is a testament to the inherent goodness present within humanity. It exemplifies our ability as human beings to rise above our own needs and extend a helping hand to others. When we choose organ donation, we are choosing life over death, offering another chance at happiness and well-being for someone who might otherwise see no hope for the future. Through organ transplantation, individuals can regain their health and live fulfilling lives once again. Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai celebrated National Organ Donation Day to foster understanding, compassion, and knowledge about the life-transforming gift that is organ donation.

Dr Amit Langote, Head of Nephrology and Kidney transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “Organ donation is the need of the hour as thousands of lives hang in the balance, desperately waiting for a second chance at life. The demand for organ transplants far outweighs the supply, leaving many patients with no hope or a significantly reduced quality of life. With advancements in medical technology and surgical techniques, the success rates of organ transplant surgeries have significantly improved over the years. However, this progress is limited by the shortage of organs available for transplantation. Currently, there is an alarming gap between those awaiting organs and those willing to donate them. This gap can only be bridged if more people understand and appreciate the importance of organ donation. One organ donor can save up to 8 lives. By donating their organs after death or even while alive through living donations such as kidney or liver transplants, individuals can potentially save multiple lives. The event aimed to encourage everyone to come forward and donate organs.”

Dr Vikram Raut, Head of Liver Transplant, Medicover Hospitals, Navi Mumbai said, “To reduce the demand for organ transplantation by promoting healthy lifestyles and wellness, spread awareness about brain stem death, deceased organ donation and control of illegal practices related to organ transplantation and to bust myths and misconceptions related to organ donation and transplantation, we came up with a day-long event wherein around 30 doctors, hospital staffs, patients and their family members participated in fun activities such as fashion show, live band and other fun activities. Many talented recipients and donors showcased their skills of singing or dancing and shared their life-changing experience of transplant. This was followed by a certificate and trophy distribution to the organ donors. “LIFE AFTER TRANSPLANT” a book based on organ donation was introduced. This book explains the Do’s and Don’ts after organ transplant. Everyone present at the event pledged to donate organs and transform lives.”

Broadband India Forum Supports ICRIER Working Paper’s Findings Against Satellite Spectrum Auctions

New Delhi, 11th August 2023: The Broadband India Forum (BIF), an independent policy forum and knowledge-based think-tank, today highlighted the compelling findings of the recently released ICRIER Working Paper (No.417 of July 2023). The paper, authored by ICRIER and Prof Rekha Jain, scrutinizes the implications of Satellite Spectrum Assignments through auctions and underscores the failure of auctions in achieving vital spectrum management and regulatory objectives.

The authors conducted a thorough evaluation of the effectiveness of the auction mechanism for spectrum assignment in achieving policy goals and regulations. The assessment was based on nine specific criteria, including effective utilization by service providers, promoting competition, ensuring a fair and transparent allocation process, harmonizing with international best practices, maximizing productive spectrum use, achieving universal coverage, enhancing diversity in the TV industry, fostering satellite sector growth, and enabling global competitiveness for Indian telecom companies.

The conclusion of the comprehensive analysis is a resounding indictment of exclusive assignments and auctions as mechanisms that fall short of fulfilling the critical objectives of spectrum management and regulation. Importantly, the authors emphasize that satellite spectrum is a shared resource, and existing empirical and practical models of assignment through auctions are scant. Instead, the authors advocate for an administrative assignment of space-based communication spectrum on a shared basis, in line with international best practices.

The paper suggests that employing prioritization and coordination mechanisms for spectrum sharing within the framework of ITU Radio Regulations, adapted to the domestic context, would offer regulatory certainty. This approach would be instrumental in achieving universal coverage, facilitating satellite sector growth, enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian telecom companies, and most crucially, preserving and enhancing content diversity and plurality – the foundation of a robust democracy.

Mr. T.V. Ramachandran, President of BIF, the think tank that commissioned the research report, commented, “As highlighted by the experts, the auctioning of satellite spectrum could result in an overly challenging scenario for industry participants, making it exceedingly difficult to access the spectrum or manage the burden of high auction prices. Such an outcome would significantly compromise consumer interests and the overall well-being of the sector. Notably, it is imperative to recognize that the unanimous sentiment among our space startups, satellite/broadcast operators, and service providers stands firmly against the notion of satellite spectrum auctions.”
