The Convergence Foundation co-hosts a landmark conference on ‘Creating Systemic Impact’

Creating Systemic Impact (2)

Bengaluru, 26th June 2024: The Convergence Foundation, in collaboration with Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, Centre for Exponential Change, and India Impact Sherpas (knowledge partner), hosted a landmark conference on ‘Creating Systemic Impact’, bringing together development practitioners, thought leaders and philanthropists to focus on the practices and enablers of systems change.

Organizations that adopt the systems change approach—System Support Organisations (SSOs)—work closely with governments at both the central and state levels to create large-scale impact by addressing the root causes of problems rather than applying quick fixes or band-aid solutions.

In the keynote address by Rohini Nilekani, Chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies, she emphasized, “This decade is one of the most critical decades in human history, demanding inclusive and exponential social change. We have the best chance ever now to create a different future than is feared. But for that, we need risk capital deployed strategically and urgently to reduce the friction between Samaaj, Sarkaar, and Bazaar, and unlock the true potential of each. Philanthropists and foundations must step forward NOW! Let’s think bigger, be bolder in our collaborations, and place better bets on leaders who are invested in systemic change.”

The Convergence Foundation

A highlight of the conference was a panel discussion on ‘Unlocking Funding for Systemic Impact’, moderated by Praveen Khanghta, Head of Strategy and Investments at The Convergence Foundation. The panel featured esteemed speakers including Murugan Vasudevan, CEO of Veddis Foundation; Shruti Shibulal, CEO and Director of Tamara Leisure Experiences; Srikanth Viswanathan, CEO of Janaagraha; and Sumit Tayal, CEO of Give India.

Bikkrama Daulet Singh, Operating Partner at The Convergence Foundation, while emphasising the urgent need to unlock funding for systemic impact, stated, “The systems change approach holds the highest potential for transformative change. Philanthropists seeking maximum return on investment should prioritize supporting organizations that collaborate with governments to achieve scalable and sustainable results. It is crucial for philanthropists and system orchestrators to learn, reflect, and continuously align their efforts to maximize their collective impact.”

The conference also featured the unveiling of Sanjay Purohit’s book, Think Sustain, the third instalment in the Think book series. The book was launched by Rohini Nilekani. Alongside Think Scale and Think Speed, Think Sustain aims to inspire change that leads to impactful transformations. These Think books serve as companions in the journey to achieving impact at scale.

Sanjay Purohit, the author, CEO, and Chief Curator of Centre for Exponential Change, expressed his gratitude at the conference, saying, “C4EC is an emerging space for co-creation and collaboration bringing together system orchestrators, diverse enablers, and influencers to enable exponential change journeys. The reason why we co-founded this Centre is because we know that the exponential change journey is long and winding and we all need to come together to inspire these ripples of change. Like we strive to conserve natural systems (such as coral reefs and rainforests) that sustain the health of our planet, we must strive to enable system orchestrators, who ensure the health of our society.”

The conference marked a significant step towards fostering collaboration and innovation in addressing India’s complex challenges at scale. The commitment and insights shared by the participants underscored the potential of systems change to drive sustainable and impactful development across India.

Pioneers of the 70 years of Voluntary Blood Donation in India

26th June 2024  Bangalore, Karnataka, India  WHO is celebrating World Blood Donor Day on June 14th with a theme – “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors”. However, India pioneered this initiative 70 years ago in 1954 by Mrs. Leela Moolgaokar, Padma Shri receipt for her commendable work in Voluntary Blood Donation. Rotary Bangalore TTK Blood Centre proudly recognizes “70 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors!”

The first records of voluntary blood donation initiatives in India can be traced back to 1942, during the time of World War II when the first blood bank was established in Kolkata, West Bengal to take care the blood needs of those injured in the battlefield. Employees Government and industrial houses volunteered to donate blood for this humanitarian cause. But this enthusiasm waned once the war ended.

A decade passed by till Mrs. Leela Moolgaokar, a renowned social worker, and one of the pioneers in voluntary blood transfusion, initiated a blood donation drive in Bombay (now Mumbai), inspired by her son’s injuries, from 1954 onwards. For her work in voluntary blood transfusion services in India, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 1963.

The 1960s showed expanding efforts — Kolkata (Jadavpur University), Ahmedabad and Delhi (Red Cross Societies) and Chandigarh (Blood Bank, PGI along with a group of voluntary social workers, Blood Bank Society).

In 1971, Prof. J.G. Jolly, a physician and professor of the Department of Transfusion Medicine, took up the movement to further heights by spearheading the movement against professional blood donors. Motivated by this, Ms. Kanta Sarup Krishen along with like-minded friends established the Blood Bank Society Chandigarh (BBS) and worked for the cause of voluntary blood donation. She was also the founder and secretary general of the Indian Society of Blood Transfusion and Immunohematology (ISBTI), a post she held for 45 years.

In 1973, Dr. Shanthi Ranganathan, today is known more for her work in the area of de-addiction, started Madras Voluntary Blood Bank to mobilize voluntary blood donation to support the blood needs of Government Hospitals in Chennai.

Biohacking Boom in India: Balancing Ancient Wisdom with Modern Innovations for Longevity and Health

Rakesh Somani, Biohacker

By: Rakesh Somani, Biohacker | Ironman Triathlete | COO & Co-founder Decode Age.

Biohacking is picking up in India, with people trying everything from cryotherapy to IV therapy. As more people enter biohacking, we must approach it with excitement and caution. Millionaires spending millions to reverse their biological age, it also raises a question: can biohacking help us live longer and healthier?

While biohacking is a new term, this concept of lengthening life is not new. Indian traditions, through the Vedas and yoga, have always emphasized practices for extending life and healthspan. My journey into biohacking started when I was training for the Ironman races. Meeting Ben Greenfield was a turning point. That meeting inspired me to explore more biohacks to enhance my performance and optimize my overall health. Initially, it was more about improving my workouts, but slowly, it became a holistic approach. Today, I feel amazing – clear mind, I have more energy, and I also experience less brain fog. It has been a process of trial and error, finding what works best for me.

My Top Three Biohacks for Longevity for Beginners:

  • Start Optimising Your Sleep: Rest is the most important first step. Technology like Oura rings or Whoop bands to help track the quality of your sleep. Focus more on getting a deep REM sleep rather than just the 8 hours.
  • Begin with Mindfulness & Meditation exercises: Breathwork practices like WimHoff techniques and meditation have a lot of positive effects when it comes to stress reduction and may help with mental clarity.
  • Explore Grounding & Light Therapy: Daily sunlight exposure, or red-light therapy can help improve cellular function. Hot and cold treatments, infrared sauna baths, and cold plunges offer numerous health benefits too. Incorporate these therapies slowly into your biohacking routine. When it comes to longevity and healthy ageing, key practices include personalised nutrition based on your microbiome via gut tests and health supplements such as NAD+ boosters like NR or NMN, magnesium, omega-3s, and vitamins D3 & K2. Physical health is also equally important; high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or the REHIT will help improve physical health and keep you running healthily in the longer run. Incorporating biohacking principles into daily routines doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Biohacking is about discovering and incorporating practices that work best for you. It’s more about finding what I would call a beautiful state of mind.

Start with small, actionable steps that align with your goals. Gradually incorporate new techniques, supplements and practices. The science of longevity and ageing is rapidly evolving, stay informed on the latest research, integrate biohacking techniques, and stay ageless as you age. Remember, Biohacking is more about ageing healthy rather than simply adding years to your life.
