The Ultimate Pecan Guide: Tips from the American Pecan Council

American pecans

Pecans, a beloved nut with a rich heritage and unmatched versatility, are a staple in kitchens and pantries worldwide. From delectable pies and savory dishes to nutrient-packed snacks, pecans continue to gain recognition for their culinary and health benefits. To help consumers maximize the freshness, flavor, and nutrition of this premium nut, the American Pecan Council shares essential tips on how to select and store pecans effectively.

Why Pecans Deserve the Spotlight
Pecans are more than just an ingredient; they’re a superfood. These nuts are:

Nutrient-Dense: Packed with over 19 vitamins and minerals, pecans are a rich source of magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E.

Heart-Healthy: Containing plant-based monounsaturated fats, pecans support heart health and cholesterol management.

An Antioxidant Powerhouse: Pecans rank among the highest in antioxidant content, promoting overall well-being.

Choosing the Freshest Pecans

When buying pecans, freshness and quality are paramount. Here are some tips for ensuring you get the best:

For Shelled Pecans: Inspect the nuts for a bright, uniform brown color and a healthy, plump appearance. Avoid pecans that are shriveled or have a stale odor.

For In-Shell Pecans: Choose nuts with clean, unbroken shells that feel heavy for their size. Shake them; if you hear a rattle, the nut inside may have dried out.

Simple Steps for Storing Pecans Properly

Pecans have a high oil content, making them susceptible to spoilage if not stored correctly. Follow these tips to keep your pecans fresh:

Room Temperature: Store pecans in a cool, dry place for short-term use, but consume them within a few weeks.

Refrigeration: Extend their freshness by placing them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Shelled pecans will stay fresh for up to nine months, while in-shell pecans last even longer.

Freezing: For extended storage, pecans can be frozen for up to two years without losing flavor or texture. Always seal them in an airtight bag to prevent exposure to moisture and odors.

Culinary Versatility of Pecans
From traditional pecan pie to modern salads and smoothies, pecans enhance a wide range of recipes. Their natural sweetness and buttery texture make them a perfect ingredient for both sweet and savory dishes. As a tree nut, pecans contribute positively to the environment. Pecan trees improve soil quality, enhance biodiversity, and require fewer inputs than many other crops. By choosing pecans, consumers are making a sustainable choice that supports farmers and the planet.

Ankura Hospital Detects Rare IH Case in 14-Year-Old Boy

Picture-01

09th December, 2024: Ankura Hospital for Women & Children, a prominent healthcare institution known for its specialized services in women’s and child health has diagnosed a rare case of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) in a 14 year old boy.

The patient was brought to Ankura Hospital, Gachibowli and was suffering from recurring headaches for a long period affecting his academic performance and daily activities. Despite the child parents having sought medical attention multiple times for his recurring headaches including taking chronic analgesics and ayurvedic medications for the past five years, no relief in symptoms. Apart from worsening headaches, the child experiences weight gain and other symptoms like dizziness, and fear of light which eventually led them to visit Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, Gachibowli.

Dr K Uday Kumar, a Pediatric Intensivist, Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, said, “The child had been suffering from headaches for a long period, affecting his academic performance and daily activities. As this appeared to be more than a common headache, a consultation with a Paediatric Neurologist at our center was sought.”

Dr Amol Kumar Jadhav, Paediatric Neurologist, Ankura Hospital, Gachibowli, said, “Based on the child’s complaint of increased headaches at night and in early morning, which got particularly worse when lying down, we suspected it to be Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. After discussing with his parents the use of advanced diagnostics including MRI of the brain and CSF analysis and taking their approval, we have confirmed the underlying problem. The CSF pressure was found to be 34 cm of water, which is significantly higher than normal pressure, and neuroimaging revealed features of IIH thus confirming the diagnosis of Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension in the child. “

Dr Amol Kumar informed, “Missed diagnoses in conditions like IIH can have serious health consequences. It also increases everyday debility for the patients and their families. Though more common in females, it’s always prudent to suspect IIH in males too, especially if they are obese and have typical symptoms. Identifying this condition early is crucial for effective management.”

According to Dr Krishna Prasad Vunnam, Medical Director, Ankura Hospital, Hyderabad said, “At Ankura Hospital, we are committed to identifying and managing even the most challenging medical conditions. Diagnosing this rare case of idiopathic intracranial hypertension in a young patient highlights the importance of early detection and specialized care. Our team worked carefully to ensure accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment, offering the best possible outcome for the patient.”

Shri Santosh Choubey Unveils ‘Kahani Ka Raasta’ Essay Collection

'कहानी का रास्ता'

9 December 2024: The launch ceremony for the latest essay collection, Kahani Ka Raasta, by senior poet-storyteller, World Stage Director, and Chancellor of Rabindranath Tagore University, Shri Santosh Choubey, was held at the Vanmali Auditorium at Scope Global Skills University in Bhopal. The event was graced by numerous distinguished guests.

During the launch, Shri Santosh Choubey, while recalling ‘Vanmali Ji‘, reflected on the nature of storytelling. He emphasized that the journey of a story is never a straightforward one. “It is a dynamic path,” he remarked, “weaving through memories, minds, and moments—sometimes winding like mountain trails, other times racing across open plains.” Notably, this book includes significant critical essays such as ‘Kahani Ka Raasta’, ‘Aaj ki Kahani, ‘Kahani Kaha Hai?’, ‘Kahani me prem’, ‘Kahani me Drishya Vidhan’, Shabdo ke paar arth ki talash, ‘Katha Bhopal’, ‘Kahani me nayepan ki talaash’, ‘Hindi kahani ke do sau baras, and ‘Vigyan Kahaniyo ke adbudh sansaar’.

Shri Santosh Choubey, speaking about new writers, said that new writers need to be listened to with affinity. Often, critics criticize a new writer’s work in such a way that the new writer feels trampled. This shrinks the creative world of Hindi. We should always welcome new writers. The responsibility of refining new writers should lie with senior writers and critics.

Presiding over the launch ceremony organized by AISECT Publications, Scope Global Skills University, and Vanmali Srijan Peeth, Prof. Vinod Tiwari, a renowned critic, editor, and supporter from New Delhi, said that in the literary world, criticism is like an institution. Editing is like an institution. Criticism is never written keeping the reader at the center. It orients the reader. It acts as a catalyst for the reader to read the creation. ‘Kahani Ka Raasta‘ is an important book in this direction.

JNU’s senior critic Prof. Devendra Chaubey said that an important task of a critic is to document the creative work of their time from a critical perspective. In that sense, ‘Kahani Ka Raasta‘ is an exceptional book of critical documentation. It is an important example of creative prose.

Noted storyteller and Delhi University Associate Professor Dr. Ashutosh said that Santosh Choubey’s book is written in a conversational language style. He has written it not like an omniscient teacher, but like a reader. He does not carry the burden of concept but takes the reader along with him.

Senior storyteller and Chairman of Vanmali Srijan Peeth, Bhopal, Shri Mukesh Verma said that in the book ‘Kahani Ka Raasta’, while the story is at the center, it talks about all other genres of literature, topics, and related issues. This book is a bouquet of creative thoughts.

Senior poet and Chairman of Vanmali Srijan Peeth, Delhi, Shri Leeladhar Mandloi said that this is a vibrant book about stories. The artistic elements of the arts of our time have been intensely incorporated in this book. The reader has been located and given importance. This book is free from academic rigidity. It highlights and raises the important questions of its time. It is a speaking book. It is about the storytelling of a story.

The event was orchestrated by young storyteller Shri Kunal Singh, with welcome remarks by Ms. Jyoti Raghuvanshi, the National Coordinator of Vanmali Srijan Peeth. The launch drew significant participation from Bhopal’s literary community, including writers, literature enthusiasts, and young creatives.

Published by AISECT Publications in collaboration with Scope Global Skills University and Vanmali Srijan Peeth, ‘Kahani Ka Raasta’ promises to be a significant contribution to contemporary Hindi literary discourse.
