Copper Soars to Record Dollar 14,533 on US Tariff and Supply Concerns

New Delhi, Sep 8: Copper prices hit a record high on Tuesday, with three-month futures on the London Metal Exchange rising 0.8 per cent to $14,533 a tonne, as uncertainty over potential US tariffs triggered a rush to move supplies into the US.

The latest rally reflects both immediate supply concerns and strong long-term demand. Traders are shifting copper towards the US, tightening availability in other markets, while consumption is expected to remain firm from power grids, renewable energy, electric vehicles and data centres.

Global mine output also weakened in the first half of 2026, adding to concerns over whether supply can keep pace with future demand. Tighter inventories in the LME system have further supported prices.

Indian markets followed the global trend, with copper futures on the MCX gaining ground and shares of state-owned Hindustan Copper rising sharply during the session.

The surge could increase input costs for industries such as construction, automobiles, electronics and power equipment, while stronger copper prices may benefit mining and metal producers. With US tariff policy still uncertain, the market is likely to remain sensitive to trade developments, inventories and global mine supply.
