CPDL urges consumers to update sanctioned load as per actual electricity usage

Chandigarh, July 08: Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has urged consumers to review their sanctioned electricity load update it, in line with their actual power consumption. Over the years, many households and commercial establishments have added new electrical appliances such as air conditioners, geysers, induction cooktops, electric vehicle chargers and other high consumption equipment. However, in several cases, the sanctioned load/Contract demand has not been enhanced to commensurate with new load.

CPDL’s analysis indicates that in number of connections, the actual load being used is higher than the sanctioned load. While consumers may not always be aware of this mismatch, it can place additional stress on the electricity distribution network and may also pose safety risks within consumer premises.

As per the tariff order approved by Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) dated 30th October 2025, usage beyond the sanctioned load may attract load violation charges, including penalties on the excess demand and energy corresponding to excess demand.

Consumers are encouraged to assess their current electricity requirements and apply for load enhancement, if needed. Updating the sanctioned load helps ensure safer and more reliable power supply, improves system planning.

For instance, if a consumer has a sanctioned load of 5 kW but the maximum demand recorded by the meter is 7 kW, then the excess load would be 2 kW. Further, if the total electricity consumption during the billing period is 700 units, the consumption attributable to the excess load will be 200 units. In this case, the 2 kW of excess load and the corresponding 200 units of electricity consumption shall be billed at twice the applicable normal tariff, in accordance with the applicable regulations.

CPDL Spokesperson said, “As Chandigarh’s power requirements continue to grow, we request consumers to ensure that their sanctioned load accurately reflects their actual electricity usage.”

Consumers seeking load enhancement can contact CPDL’s customer service centres or visit the company’s digital platforms for guidance and assistance.

CEA advises consumers to keep their load within the sanctioned limits

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), in its recent advisory on the safe and judicious use of electricity, has advised consumers to keep their connected load within the sanctioned limit and inform the utility of any increase in load. This helps ensure safe operation of the electrical system and minimizes the risk of electrical mishaps.
