However, the overall job market sentiment showcased a few positives, with sectors like Hospitality, Oil & Gas, and FMCG demonstrating growth in hiring. Non-metro cities continued their strong performance, outpacing metros; while senior professionals remained in high demand, driving a healthy year-on-year growth in roles for experienced candidates.

Hospitality industry registers a healthy rise

The Hospitality and Travel sector witnessed a remarkable 16% surge in hiring activity compared to April 2023, driven by the growth in travel and tourism. Positions like Front Office Managers, Housekeeping Supervisors, and F&B Service Professionals were in high demand across major urban hubs like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Oil & Gas sector fuels job growth

The Oil & Gas industry recorded a 15% year-on-year increase in new job creation in April 2024. Roles like Petroleum Engineers, Drilling Engineers, and Production Operators were sought after, particularly in locations like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Jaipur.

FMCG sector rides on rural demand

Hiring in the FMCG sector witnessed an 11% upswing this month compared to April 2023, fueled by rising demand in rural areas. Sales Managers, Supply Chain Executives, and Brand Managers were among the most sought-after profiles, with cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai driving this growth.

AI and ML roles continue to be in demand

While the IT sector saw a modest 2% year-on-year growth in April 2024, roles related to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning maintained their momentum, registering a 19% increase in hiring compared to the previous year.

Mini-metros shine, and metros hold steady. Non-metro cities like Ahmedabad (+10% year-on-year) and Vadodara (+8%) emerged as hiring hotspots, while metro cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Pune witnessed stable hiring trends.

Senior professionals in high demand

The demand for experienced professionals remained high, with roles for candidates between 13-16 years of experience growing by 9% year-on-year and those with over 16 years of experience clocking a remarkable 21% surge in hiring activity. However, entry-level hiring remained muted, contrasting with the robust demand for seasoned professionals.

Dr. Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer of Naukri.com, said, “While the overall Index is flat, the new financial year is off to a positive start with remarkable hiring growth recorded in Hospitality, Oil & Gas and FMCG. Non-metros continue to outshine the bigger cities and this bodes well for the Indian hiring market in the months to come”
