New Delhi, Sep 17: The Ministry of Coal has stressed the need for stronger long-term fuel planning in Uttar Pradesh to ensure a steady supply of coal to thermal power plants and support the state’s growing electricity requirements.

With Uttar Pradesh expanding its industrial base, infrastructure and urban economy, demand for reliable power is also increasing. Thermal power continues to play an important role in meeting this demand, making a stable and well-planned coal supply chain essential for uninterrupted generation.
The focus on fuel security is also gaining importance as Uttar Pradesh adds new power-generation capacity. The 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, with three 660 MW units, has emerged as a significant addition to the state’s power infrastructure. The project is linked to the development of the Pachwara South coal block, which is being developed to provide a dedicated source of coal for the plant.
The development of the coal block and the commissioning of new generating capacity reflect a broader effort to strengthen the connection between coal production and power generation. Such arrangements can help power producers plan fuel requirements more efficiently and reduce their dependence on short-term coal supplies.
Uttar Pradesh has also been witnessing a steady expansion of its energy infrastructure as electricity consumption rises across households, agriculture, industries and commercial establishments. For a state with a large population and rapidly growing economic activity, maintaining adequate fuel availability is important for keeping power plants operational during periods of high demand.
The Ministry’s emphasis on long-term fuel security is therefore aimed not only at ensuring coal availability but also at improving coordination between coal producers, power utilities and state authorities. Better planning can help generators maintain sufficient coal stocks, respond more effectively to supply disruptions and improve the overall reliability of the power system.
The growth of coal production and the development of dedicated supply arrangements also highlight the continuing role of domestic coal in supporting India’s energy security. For Uttar Pradesh, a stronger coal-to-power supply chain can provide greater stability to its thermal power fleet while supporting industrial activity and future economic expansion.
As the state continues to add generation capacity and its electricity needs grow, ensuring that adequate fuel reaches power plants at the right time will remain an important part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader energy strategy.
