SoCal Production Company to Host Inaugural Female Filmmaker Meetup

Temecula, CA, February 07, 2023 — Footlight Studios, a women-helmed production company based out of the Inland Empire, announced yesterday its first Female Filmmaker Meetup (FFM). The FFM seeks to build a community of women-identifying and gender nonbinary filmmakers with focus outside of the LA area. The Footlights – the female filmmakers behind Footlight Studios – believe that all of Southern California is rich with female talent in all areas of storytelling and aim to make a positive change in the creative industry.

While resources for filmmakers are more widely available in the LA area, it dwindles the further ventured outside of the 30-mile studio zone – an area defined by a 30-mile (48 km) radius of “Hollywood” used by the American entertainment industry to determine employee benefits for film-work done within the zone. This generally leaves filmmakers outside of the zone just out of arms reach from resources, opportunities, and mentorship. Female Filmmakers often feel this the most as despite desire and talent, only 25% of behind-the-scenes roles on big US movies are held by women, and just 17% of directors and writers are female, according to a 2021 study.

Footlight Studios aims to grow those numbers by hosting the FFM monthly so women in the entertainment industry in all of Southern California can collaborate, share resources, attend trainings, and create a support system. The Female Filmmaker Meetup is free and takes place on February 22, 2023 at 7pm at Luke’s On Front in Old Town Temecula. RSVP available at https://footlightffm.eventbrite.com

“We know first hand that gender parity is a big problem in the creative industries. And often, inaction is enhanced by an overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to begin.” -Footlights

“Female filmmakers don’t always know where to start, what resources are available, and often lack a community of female filmmakers and opportunities from more established storytellers to truly excel, when outside of the 30-mile zone. All of Southern California is flush with incredible talent from all of its corners and we aim to unify.”

This event comes on the heels of the 48 Hour Film Project’s announcement that Footlight Studios made the top 15 internationally of the YES WE CANNES challenge – a best of the best competition for all of the city winners of the 48 Hours Film Project. If chosen on March 18th at the Filmapalooza 2023 awards ceremony in LA, Footlight Studios’ film “Stealing Time” will be screening at the Short Film Corner in Festival de Cannes in May.

About the Footlights – Footlight Studios is a women-helmed production company that puts female storytellers at the forefront – in front and behind the camera – in pivotal and essential roles. Its Executive Producers are Vanessa Silva, Heather Hentila, Chelsea Gray & Ainsley Strachan, who have been working together in the scope of film, series, video, and picture production since 2014. The Footlights’ goal is to make an inclusive, safe, and professional space for storytellers, regardless of experience, with a focus on female creatives.

Local Female Filmmakers Win Top Honors
in Filmmaking Competition

Inland Empire, CA, February 07, 2023 – The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP), the world’s oldest and largest timed filmmaking competition, announced the results of the Inland Empire’s Best Film of 2022, during its “Best Of” Screenings and Award Show held at the Harkins Theatre in Redlands. The winning film “The Spaces Between” by the Footlights Team, an all-female cast and crew, will go on to represent the Inland Empire against 48HFP winners all around the world at Filmapalooza 2023 in Los Angeles this coming March.

The 48-Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which a team makes a movie – from concept to final – in just 48 hours. They are given a genre, a character, a prop, and a line of dialogue – all required – and the rest is up to them to make a 4-7 minute short film. The films are then screened at a local theater in front of an eager audience at a Premiere event. The top-rated films, ranked by a distinguished panel of industry judges, go on to the “Best Of” Screenings and Awards event.

The “Best Of” Award Winners were announced on November 8, 2022, honoring different categories such as Best Cinematography, Best Writing, and Best Editing. The Footlights Team brought in four top honors with Vanessa Silva winning Best Director, Chelsea Gray winning Best Acting in a Leading Role, and their film “The Spaces Between” winning the Audience Award and Best Film of 2022.

“We are so humbled and honored for the nominations and wins, and beyond thrilled to represent the IE at The 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza 2023!” -Vanessa Silva, Team Leader, Director, Cinematographer, Co-Writer and Co-Editor

“Thank you to Kevin Lyons and Lucas Cuny for an overall incredible experience, the prestigious judges, all of the filmmakers that participated and put out incredible films, and, of course, the entire Footlights Team who worked tirelessly to make this film happen.”

Since the 48-Hour Film Project’s inception, more than 1,400 projects have taken place, over 50,000 short films have been made, and more than 600,000 filmmakers have taken part. The 48HFP also screens a special selection of films each year at the Cannes Film Festival – Short Film Corner in Cannes, France. The films chosen are announced during Filmapalooza which the Footlights Team is eager to attend, as their film “The Spaces Between” is now a contender.

About The 48 Hour Film Project – The 48 Hour Film Project is an international filmmaking event celebrating its 20th Anniversary. As a global community built on local events, the 48HFP connects with thousands of filmmakers each year on six continents.

NESCom at Husson University Cuts Ribbon on New Full-Service Student-Run Marketing Agency

Bangor, ME, February 07, 2023 — Hiring an advertising and marketing agency that can help organizations with their strategies and materials is often difficult for small businesses, start-ups and non-profits due to the costs involved. Addressing this challenge is a new student-run agency at Husson University that’s designed to provide pro bono advertising and marketing assistance to area organizations that wouldn’t otherwise have access to these services. The University marked the opening of this new agency with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, January 30, 2022.

With a location adjacent to the lobby of the Wildey Communications Center, home of the New England School of Communications (NESCom) at Husson University, the One Circle Agency, has already begun to work with area clients.

“This agency is an important new innovation in hands-on learning,” said Alban Michaud, Class of 2023, a student in NESCom’s marketing communications program. “It’s just one of the ways Husson University creates trailblazing opportunities for the next generation of communications professionals. Student-run agencies like this will help students like me get hired after I graduate.”

Theresa Ayotte, an assistant professor and the graphic/visual design program coordinator at NESCom says that her partnership with Nancy Roberts, the program coordinator for the marketing communications program, is helping to make the agency successful. “This is a true collaboration where students are meeting with the client and creating marketing plans and supporting materials including logos, posters, social media, websites, videos and more,” said Ayotte. “Combining their efforts through this agency provides students with a first-rate, hands-on learning experience where they all get to work with real-world clients.”

“We’re not looking to compete with other local marketing agencies for business,” added Dr. Marie Hansen, dean of the New England School of Communications. “In fact, the agencies I’ve spoken with appreciate the One Circle Agency concept. They see it as a proving ground that will help prepare students for future work in a professional environment.”

Students will fill every role in the agency, under the supervision of Ayotte and Roberts. This includes graphic design, social media, messaging, public relations and client management. Participating in One Circle Agency projects will also give students the opportunity to learn about the advantages and challenges that can arise when working in teams.

Organizations interested in learning more about working with the One Circle Agency on projects that would benefit their organizations can contact the Agency at OneCircleAgency@husson.edu.

DRC Mining Week Building on Triumphant Return Last Year with an Even Bigger 2023 Edition

Lubumbashi, Congo (Kinshasa), February 07, 2023 — Last year’s triumphant, long-awaited homecoming of the DRC Mining Week expo and conference was an overwhelming, record-breaking success, confirming the event’s status as a trusted, indispensable member of the country’s mining community and thé meeting place for mining stakeholders doing business in the DRC and in the Copperbelt.

In 2023, the sustained global interest in DRC as a mining investment and resource destination will continue with five country pavilions from China, France, Germany, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

“The success of last year’s event is evident from the numbers, with an overall participation of nearly 7000 mining professionals, and the team is working hard on maintaining and surpassing the same quality and experience for the upcoming edition when we return to Lubumbashi from 14–16 June this year,” says Patricia Kazaka, event manager DRC Mining Week at the VUKA Group, the organisers of the event for the past 18 years.

Particularly the DRC’s mining minister, H.E. Antoinette Nsamba Kalambayi, made a strong impression by her presence and patronage last year, attending every session and various side activities at DRC Mining Week. She said that the “DRC is focussing on developing value chains of its minerals to manufacture electric batteries itself.”

Some DRC Mining Week highlights from 2022:
– 5900+ attendees over 3 days
– 800+ conference delegates
– 200+ sponsors and exhibitors
– 4 international pavilions (France, Germany, South Africa and UK)
– 32 suppliers
– 83 expert speakers in 21 conference and workshop sessions
– 113 mining houses and exploration companies represented
– 634 business meetings over 3 days

“None of this would have been possible without the trust of our key partners and sponsors who have been supporting the event for years,” says Patricia Kazaka, “and we are proud to say that all of our main partners have already confirmed their return to this year’s edition.”

Programme themes and VIPs
The theme of this year’s event is: “Recognising DRC mining’s triumphs and victories” and will include high-level conference sessions to allow delegates to get up to speed on the latest developments in the DRC’s mining sector with expert speakers from the public and private sectors.

Programme themes will include: trade and investment, environmental and climate change and policies and regulations. Other event highlights will be the Women in Mining session, an empowering network to inspire and support women establishing themselves in the sector, as well as the power and energy-focused sessions, looking into off-grid and sustainable solutions supporting mining activities going forward.

The following ministers and government representatives have already been confirmed for this year’s programme:
– H.E. Antoinette Nsamba Kalambayi, Minister, Ministry of Mines, DRC
– Excellence, Jacques Kyabula Katwe, Governor of Haut Katanga, DRC
– H.E. José Mpanda Kabangu, Minister, Ministry of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation, DRC
– H.E Benoit-Pierre Laramée, Ambassador of Canada to the DRC
– H.E. Ruffin Benam Beltoungou, Minister, Ministry of Mines and Geology, Central African Republic

Longstanding industry support
The event boasts the longstanding and loyal support of many mining and industrial sector leaders, including Standard Bank, who returns as the lead sponsor, while Ecobank, Glencore and EquityBCDC are diamond plus sponsors and AirTel, FBNBank, MES and ARSP are diamond sponsors. Official industry partners that support the event include the DRC Chamber of Mines, FEC and the DRC’s Ministry of Mines.

“Standard Bank is convinced that the Congolese economy will show a positive growth rate and the bank is willing to support this growth.” -Marie-Gabrielle Opese, Deputy CEO, Standard Bank, DRC

“DRC has experienced a ‘real recovery’ in the production of mining resources in the space of a few years, the annual production of the DRC has gone from 10 thousand tons to nearly 1 million.” -DRC Louis Watum, President, Chamber of Mines, DRC

“The DRC Mining Week 2022 was really great with an amazing variety of participants. I participated in several editions but this one was really special; we felt the desire of the delegates to get involved differently in the mining sector of the DRC and for Glencore it is a must to take part in this event. As a major copper producer in the DRC and Africa and the world’s leading producer of cobalt, we had to be there.” -Marie-Chantal Kaninda, Vice President Corporate Affairs, Glencore DRC
