Dubai’s Higher Education Sector Sees ~20% Enrolment Growth, International Student Numbers Surge by 29% at KHDA-Licensed Institutions

Dubai, UAE – 05 June 2025 — Dubai is rapidly solidifying its position as a premier global hub for higher education, underpinned by strong growth in student enrolment and a significant increase in the inflow of international students.

These insights were highlighted during an exclusive, high-level briefing, hosted by L.E.K. Consulting’s Global Education Practice in Dubai, which convened senior stakeholders, policymakers, and higher education leaders to discuss Dubai’s accelerating transformation into a world-class higher education destination. The event featured key perspectives from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).

LEK KDHA Event

According to L.E.K. Consulting’s research and analysis, Dubai presents ‘one of the most compelling growth markets globally for higher education,’ driven by key factors, including a growing high school student base, increasing demand for transnational education, the presence of globally recognised university brands, student-friendly infrastructure, and strong post-study employment pathways.

Latest figures from the KHDA highlight this strong growth momentum across the sector. More than 42,000 students are now enrolled across 41 private higher education institutions in the emirate that are licensed and regulated by the KHDA — with a ~20% increase in overall student enrolment in the 2024-25 academic year.

International student enrolment has surged by 29% compared to the previous year, now representing 35% of total enrolments in Dubai’s higher education institutions, which are licensed by the KHDA. Meanwhile, Emirati participation in international universities has also grown by 22%, underscoring Dubai’s dual appeal to both domestic and global learners. Four new international institutions opened in the current academic year alone.

The strong growth supports KHDA’s Education 33 strategy, and specifically its City of Students initiative, which aims to raise international student enrolment to 50% by 2033, transforming Dubai into a world-leading destination for quality higher education.

“Dubai’s continued growth as a global hub for higher education is testament to our leadership’s vision and the ambitious goals of the Dubai Plan 33 and its social and economic agendas and driven by our Education 33 strategy,” said Dr. Wafi Dawood, CEO of the Strategic Development Sector at the Knowledge and Human Development Authority. “We are creating new opportunities for transnational education, strengthening Dubai’s position as a city where learners, educators, and institutions from around the world can connect, collaborate, and thrive. Through E33, we are building a future where Dubai is not only a destination for quality education, but a centre of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity.”

As the demand for transnational education, upskilling, and reskilling intensifies, Dubai’s blend of strategic policy, global connectivity, and education quality continues to position it as a top-tier alternative to traditional study destinations.

“With a growing pool of graduates from our wonderful array of international schools in the city, Dubai presents a significant opportunity for international universities to meet the evolving needs of both local and international students,” said Ashwin Assomull, Partner and Head of the Global Education Practice at L.E.K. Consulting. “Amid increasing regulatory restrictions in traditional anglophone markets, Dubai’s world-class higher education infrastructure, global connectivity, favourable cost structure, and reputation for safety present unparalleled opportunities for students, operators, and investors to capitalise on this transformative growth.”

Disrupting Education, Democratising Access: Question What’s Real is making VR work where it matters most

India-wide release, 04th June 2025: Through the years, Indian classrooms have remained largely unchanged: rows of desks, chalk on blackboards and a fixation on grades. If education is meant to shape the future, then why is it still stuck in the past? Enter (QWR) Question What’s Real, a deep-tech XR hardware manufacturing start-up that is reimaging learning entirely.

The homegrown brand is bridging the gap between today’s conventional learning methods and tomorrow’s real world with Extended Reality (XR). While VR, AR, and XR have been gradually transforming teaching and learning, QWR represents a full-blown disruption in the space. Its revolutionary VRone.Edu headsets have the NCERT curriculum for K-12 in immersive, interactive modules, thereby opening windows to a world students could once only imagine.

Most tech revolutions begin in metros. But QWR flipped that. With a focus on Tier 2, Tier 3 and even remote geographies like Kohima (Nagaland), the company has brought VR-based learning to thousands of classrooms, impacting over 2,00,000+ students across 19 states. They started where access was limited – government schools, especially Kendriya Vidayalayas, and underserved districts, alongside private schools – proving that learning isn’t a luxury but a necessity. From Mumbai, Delhi and Jaipur to Patna, Ranchi, Dehradun and Raipur, QWR is ensuring that no student is left behind.

“We believe curiosity begins with the five senses that connect us to the world, often leading to great ideas, thinking, feeling and learning. We’re not just selling headsets but redefining teaching-learning experiences to connect theoretical knowledge and practical understanding. Students shouldn’t just stress over getting good grades, but focus on the bigger picture – learning. And our VRone headsets empower kids to learn with all five of their senses, and not just their notebooks,” says Suraj Aiar, the founder of QWR.

This isn’t a gimmick. QWR’s headsets have classroom-ready, curriculum-approved modules that explain complex, abstract concepts in ways textbooks can’t. A student is not just reading about the human heart but stepping into it, exploring a holographic model, witnessing blood flow, and truly understanding the mechanics of life. Textbooks describe it. VR lets them experience it.

Further, QWR aligns with key initiatives like NEP 2022, Samagra Shiksha Yojana, and SDG-4 by making AR/VR education accessible, affordable, and scalable, ensuring quality, contextual relevance and tech-enabled learning through active participation.

Why does it matter?

Today’s students are growing up as digital natives, constantly engaged in video chats and texts through their smartphones. Despite this reality, only 10% of Indian schools have integrated digital learning tools into everyday teaching. Students are spending over 200 days a year in classrooms built for a different era, tested on memorisation, not understanding.

QWR answers this disconnect by making learning feel real. Through multiple partners, the brand has created VR modules that span several subjects taught from Kindergarten to XII grade. It also aims to build modules for fields that desperately require practical experience and not just rote learning – engineering, medicine, mechanics, and architecture.

“There are many players in VR, but when it comes to education, we’ve cracked the code. Governments and private institutions try, test and trust our solutions. Due to this, all solution partners sell their content on our devices,” adds Suraj.

What’s Next?

In a world where reality is often out of reach, whether due to time, cost, or geography, QWR ensures that students can still experience it. The result? A generation that doesn’t just memorise for marks but understands for life.

With plans to revolutionise learning in avenues like defence, upskilling blue-collar labour, and higher education, QWR aims to empower India’s human capital in an ever-changing world, where new-age tech like AI, VR XR, and robotics, amongst others, has penetrated every aspect of our daily lives. The brand isn’t waiting for change – it is driving it. The brand has also launched QWR ISV Program – India’s biggest XR Developer Grant initiative to empower developers to build directly for QWR’s hardware, enriching India’s XR landscape and removing entry barriers.

Cambridge Schools Inspire with Zero-Waste Educator Programme

Noida, 4th June, 2025: InspirEd, the annual flagship teacher training and capacity-building programme of Cambridge Schools, took on a transformative new direction this year. In alignment with World Environment Day on June 5, the summit connected education with action, demonstrating a clear, measurable commitment to sustainability. Held over 12 days, with more than 500 educators from five Cambridge branches and workshops led by top industry experts from across India, the programme focused on a wide range of vital themes.

The programme addressed a broad spectrum of essential themes—from innovative pedagogy, interdisciplinary curriculum design, and NEP implementation to art-based learning, mental well-being, and digital literacy. Some of the resource persons were Prof. Rohit Dhankar (Educationist and Founder-Secretary, Digantar; former Professor, Azim Premji University), Prof. Nandita Narain (Head, Dept of Mathematics at St.Stephen’s College, Delhi University), Kapil Pandey (President, Kutumb Foundation, Children’s writer, poet, and drama-in-education practitioner), CA (Dr.) G.S. Grewal (Chartered Accountant and renowned author of T.S. Grewal’s Accountancy textbooks), Beeba Sobti (Historian, writer, and heritage educator focused on Delhi’s cultural legacy), Samina Mishra (Documentary filmmaker, children’s author, and educator), Sayoni Basu ( Children’s publisher and co-founder of Duckbill Books; Consulting Editor, Penguin India) among many others.

“We meet every year in the second fortnight of May to renew ourselves, gain fresh perspective on the challenges in school education and discover what has changed and maybe what remains and what needs to be reaffirmed “, said Vikram Roy, President, Society for the Advancement of Education.

Remarkably, the entire event at Cambridge School Noida was hosted without using a single disposable item — not even tissue paper. In contrast, last year’s edition generated thousands of single-use items, including paper plates, cups, tetrapaks, and tissues. This year: zero. Refreshments were served in reusable steel crockery, washed using just 90 buckets of water over the period of 12 days, the majority of which came from RO machine wastewater — later repurposed for gardening. Avoiding single-use disposables helped save nearly 13,000 litres of water. All waste was carefully segregated into dry and wet categories. Some dry waste was repurposed by the housekeeping staff as storage containers, while about 140 kgs of wet waste was composted in-house. Most participants brought their own water bottles, reducing the load on the washing team, and carpooling and school bus arrangements helped minimize carbon emissions and streamline transportation.

“This wasn’t just a logistical choice — it was a deliberate commitment,” said Surabhi Bhargav, Principal, Cambridge School Noida. “We proved that with a bit of intent and a lot of teamwork, sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into even large-scale institutional events.”

Cambridge Schools now offer a compelling blueprint for how institutions can lead not only in academic excellence but also in environmental responsibility. InspirED 2025 wasn’t just a professional development programme — it delivered a real-world lesson that sustainability is not a buzzword, but a responsibility.

Philippines New Visa-Free Entry Policy Boosts Opportunities for Indian Medical Aspirants

Mumbai, 3rd June, 2025: In a move that signals growing ties between India and the Philippines, the Philippine government has introduced visa-free entry for Indian nationals, allowing them to visit the country for up to 14 days. While the circular is part of the country’s broader push to promote tourism, it also carries significant implications for the thousands of Indian students exploring medical education opportunities in the Philippines.

With its beautiful beaches, rich history and culture, and friendly people, the Philippines is fast becoming a favoured alternative to mainstream Indian tourist favorite destinations such as Thailand, Maldives, and Sri Lanka, particularly as visa regulations for Indian travelers are relaxed by more Southeast Asian countries. The new move not only further solidifies the Philippines position in the tourism sector but also facilitates travel by Indian families to visit the country as a possible destination for higher studies.

Known for its English-speaking academic environment, globally recognised MBBS programs, and affordable tuition fees, the Philippines has long been a leading destination for Indian medical aspirants. The new visa exemption now streamlines access, allowing students and their families to travel, visit campuses, interact with faculty, and experience the educational infrastructure firsthand, all without the hurdle of visa processing.

Kadwin Pillai, Managing Director of Transworld Educare and Director of Kings International Medical Academy said, “This is a welcome move that eases access to the Philippines not just for tourists, but also for families evaluating the country for higher education. It allows parents and students to gain clarity and confidence by experiencing the academic environment in person. When a country opens its doors wider, it deepens trust and that’s invaluable when it comes to something as life-shaping as medical education.”

The Philippines is home to over 60 recognised medical institutions and has steadily built a reputation among Indian students for its supportive learning ecosystem and career-ready curriculum. With the tourism policy now dovetailing with educational interests, the country is well-positioned to attract even more students seeking quality international medical training.

As global demand for healthcare professionals grows, the Philippines continues to stand out — not just as a scenic destination rivalling traditional hotspots, but as a nurturing ground for the next generation of doctors.
