Guwahati, Aug 21: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has extended greetings to senior citizens and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to their welfare, dignity and well-being.

The Chief Minister said the Assam government would continue to strengthen measures aimed at supporting senior citizens and ensuring that they can live with dignity and security.

One of the measures highlighted by the Chief Minister is special leave for government employees to take care of their ageing parents. The initiative reflects the government’s focus on encouraging families to provide proper care and support to elderly members.

Sarma also stressed the importance of treating senior citizens with respect when they access government services. The state government’s approach is aimed not only at providing welfare benefits but also at ensuring that elderly people receive considerate and dignified treatment in public offices.

The Chief Minister’s message comes as Assam continues to expand its broader social welfare initiatives. The state Cabinet recently approved the Assam Social Security Rules, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen social security measures in the state.

The government has also been working on improving citizen-focused administration and public services. During the inauguration of the new Integrated District Commissioner’s Office in Kamrup Metropolitan district, Sarma called for senior citizens visiting government offices to be treated with due respect and dignity.

The Chief Minister’s emphasis on elderly welfare highlights the government’s focus on creating a more supportive environment for senior citizens while recognising their contribution to Assam’s social and cultural life.

The state government’s message is that the welfare of senior citizens should remain an important part of public policy, with care, dignity, accessibility and family support forming key elements of its approach.
