Amid Technological Advancements, Books, Our Best Friends, Have Lost Their Place

It is undeniable that the current generation experiences significantly more conveniences than their predecessors. Back in the past, individuals used to eagerly anticipate letters sent through postal services and the replies to those letters, even though they couldn’t be certain about their safe delivery to the intended recipients. Nonetheless, they found contentment in that waiting period.

In the present era of modern technology, we have the convenience of sending messages much larger and faster than the postcards of the past, with just a few minutes and a simple tap on our devices. There are numerous examples of such technological advancements, and delving into all of them here would require an extensive discussion that couldn’t be covered even in the entire newspaper. However, let me provide one illustrative example: in earlier times, books used to be our closest companions, but now they often end up neglected, collecting dust in boxes.

The significance of books in the past is truly indescribable. During those times, we didn’t have the luxury of mobile phones or the flashy world of social media. Our lives were enriched with abundant free time, and we cherished precious moments engrossed in the pages of books instead of tapping away on mobile keyboards. The phrase “Those were the days” perfectly captures the essence of those beautiful times.

Books were indeed like a treasure trove, providing peaceful solutions to the turbulent questions that stirred within us. Whether seeking guidance in a specific domain or reliving cherished memories of love, books satisfied our souls with their calming answers. Reflecting on the reading of books as a past experience brings forth a wave of nostalgia, accurately portraying the reality of that era. Unfortunately, in today’s world, the same level of enthusiasm for reading books seems to have diminished, and only a select few continue to indulge in this enriching experience.

Truly, books serve as a reflection of truth. While it is widely known that the internet is inundated with both truths and lies, the significance of books seems to have diminished. The advent of social media and the internet has replaced the once calming and serene experience that books used to offer. As the renowned American novelist William Styron once suggested, leaving a few pages of a good book unread allows one to find solace in them during moments of sadness. However, the habit of turning away from books appears to bid farewell to an era where people sought answers to their most profound questions within the pages of books.

Despite the current generation’s lack of acknowledgment, scientific studies reveal that reading a captivating book can effectively reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels, the stress hormone. Moreover, reading books before bedtime can help alleviate sleeping troubles.

Books possess a unique power to express profound thoughts without uttering a word. The day the present generation fully appreciates this art, they will undoubtedly favor the world of books over the chaotic allure of the internet.

Celebrating Workplace Safety: How acknowledging India’s Top 25 Safest Workplaces with an award can help prevent sexual harassment at the workplace

Celebrating Workplace Safety

Mumbai, India 9th Aug, 2023: KelpHR, a provider of HR solutions has dedicated itself to promoting safer and more inclusive workplaces since its inception in 2013. To steer organizations towards creating safe, happy and inclusive workplaces for their employees, KelpHR is pleased to announce the opening of registrations for the 4th edition of the KelpHR PoSH Awards® 2023 – Top 25 Safest Workplaces in India. The awards seek to recognize organisations that go beyond compliance to create a culture of safety. Scheduled for 7 December 2023 at Mumbai, the awards event will bring together leading organisations, industry experts, and luminaries to celebrate and honour champions of safe and inclusive workplaces.

Over the last few years, the company has conducted considerable research on the implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act also known as the PoSH Act 2013. The findings set out here are based on organizations surveyed as part of an Employee Feedback Assessment conducted at the KelpHR PoSH Awards® 2022. 98% of the participants from the assessment are aware of sexual harassment at the workplace as a prevalent issue, however, there is a considerable gap between awareness and implementation. The takeaways here are that implementing comprehensive policies, fostering a culture of reporting and accountability, and providing appropriate training to upskill and empower the Internal Committee (IC) can bridge the divide between acknowledging the issue and taking meaningful action.

In a bid to gain insights about whether the policies and practices have truly percolated down to the employee and if they have made them feel safe and respected, KelpHR carried out this survey. The findings indicated that alarmingly, 69% of the victims of sexual harassment chose not to report incidents, signalling the need for a more supportive reporting environment. Moreover, the findings indicate that managers also face sexual harassment (119 out of 409 victims surveyed were managers); so strong leadership can benefit both managers and employees. Additionally, the findings indicate that men face just as much of a threat as women of sexual harassment at the workplace. 2.47% of men and 2.99% of women interviewed in the workplace experienced harassment. These statistics indicate the long road ahead to ensure employee well-being and safety.

For the organisations that were surveyed, the data and findings serve as a call to action to renew their commitment to workplace safety and well-being. The KelpHR PoSH Awards® thus play a vital role in inspiring a positive cultural shift towards fostering safe and respectful workplaces nationwide.

The 4th edition features a distinguished jury, offering valuable insights to create inclusive environments.

This year’s jury includes International commercial and corporate lawyer – Dr DDharaniikota Ssuyodhan; Zainab Patel (She / Her / Hers) – Chief Inclusion & Diversity (Pernod Ricard India); Alok Prasanna Kumar – Co-Founder and Lead (VIDHI Centre for Legal Policy); Vaishali Shintre-Bhagwat – Practising Lawyer & Chevening Scholar; CJ Joveson – Advocate (Bombay High Court); Madhura Dasgupta Sinha (She / Her) – Founder & CEO Aspire for Her, and Tina Vinod (She / Her) – Founder & Chief Consultant (Diversity Simplified). Their collective expertise will ensure that the evaluation process is rigorous, fair, and comprehensive, providing organisations with valuable insights and milestones to build safer, happier, and more inclusive workplaces.

CEO & Co-founder of KelpHR Smita Shetty Kapoor quotes,

“The PoSH Act marked a significant stride towards safer workplaces, but achieving true safety requires a comprehensive transformation. At KelpHR, our determination lies in honouring India’s safest workplaces and fostering a culture of safety, recognising that inclusive workplaces promote diversity, engagement, productivity, innovation, fairness, and compliance. They also play a vital role in attracting and retaining diverse talent while building a positive reputation. As we enter the 4th year of the KelpHR PoSH Awards®, we are thrilled by the potential for transformative workplaces and organizations to emerge. We hope the awards will leave a lasting impact on organizations, propelling them towards safer, happier, inclusive, and more productive workplaces. We extend a warm invitation to all organisations across industries to actively participate.”

Organizations can visit www.kelphrposhawards.com and register for the awards by 1 October 2023. The winners of the KelpHR PoSH Awards® 2023 will be announced on 1 December 2023, and they will be honoured at a prestigious gala award ceremony on 7 December 2023 in Mumbai.

The prestigious past winners of the KelpHR PoSH Awards® include industry giants like DBS Bank Limited, Titan, Uber India, Volvo Group India, Tata Power, and many other names from diverse sectors such as automotive, aviation, consulting, IT, ITES, Pharma, manufacturing, financial services and social service organisations.

This landmark approval by the Union Cabinet, with a budget of Rs 1.39 lakh crore, is hailed as a significant stride towards realizing the objectives of Digital India and promoting inclusiveness. The project is poised to accelerate social and economic advancement for the nation, as it commits to supplying broadband connectivity to all 6.4 lakh villages by 2025.

The Indian Telecom Sector currently hosts 1.17 billion mobile users, achieving a teledensity of 84.51%. This is supported by 7.60 lakh mobile towers and approximately 26.40 lakh BTS installations. As of March 2023, over 37 lakh kilometers of Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) have been deployed, facilitating connectivity for 832.2 million broadband users in addition to mobile subscribers.

Beneath the umbrella of the BharatNet initiative, a total of 1,77,550 Gram Panchayats (GPs) have been prepared to deliver services by June 2022. This project’s scope has been extended to encompass all inhabited villages beyond GPs across the country. The vision is to achieve broadband speeds of up to 50 Mbps by 2024-25, while also achieving fiberization in up to 70% of Telecom Towers/BTSs by the same timeline. Additionally, there are plans to map 10 lakh Route KMs of Optical Fiber Cable laid by the Public Sector Units (PSUs) on the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP) Portal.

During the span of 2021-22, a total of 19,663 Gram Panchayats (GPs) have been equipped to offer services under the BharatNet Project. According to TRAI Performance Indicator reports from 2020 and 2021, a remarkable 2.49 crore internet connections were extended by Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in rural areas in the year 2021

Mr. TR Dua,

Speaking in praise of the Government’s efforts, Mr. TR Dua, the Director General of DIPA, remarked, “This historic decision by the Union Cabinet is poised to elevate the nation’s digital connectivity quotient efficiently and expeditiously providing high-speed broadband to every Indian including Rural, thereby contributing to the realization of the ‘Antyodyay’ goal.” DIPA commends the diverse initiatives taken by the Government of India, guided by the vision of Hon’ble PMO, Mr. Narendra Modi. The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (PMGS-NMP), launched on October 13th, 2021, aimed at establishing multimodal connectivity infrastructure for economic zones. Its implementation was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on October 21st, 2021.

The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan encompasses the mapping of 12 lakh route kilometers of Optical Fiber Cables from entities like BSNL, MTNL, Railtel, and 21,000 OFC from state and private providers. The discussion also covers the mapping of 7.5 lakh towers, 25 lahks Base Transceiver Stations, 1.45 lakh PM WANI Wi-Fi hotspots, and the utilization of Underground OFC for telecom tower fiberization. This mapping of underground fibers has streamlined the formulation of Detailed Project Reports for connectivity across various sectors. Building a Strong Immune System: Protecting Your Child During the Flu Season

Dr. Ganesh Kadhe,

There’s a good chance you are reading this while sneaking glances out of a window, the breeze is cool and calming, and there are some drizzles and downpours, as your kids play indoors. The monsoon season can be calming and relaxing but on the flip side, with this comfort comes the package deal of seasonal and viral infections, more so for children.

While rainfall is unpredictable and its intensity can change in the blink of an eye, fluctuations in your child’s immunity levels can be controlled through the right nutrition. Dr. Ganesh Kadhe, Director, of Medical and Scientific Affairs, Abbott’s Nutrition business shares three tips to help support your child’s health and immunity during the upcoming flu season

  1. Prioritize Immunity Over Everything

A robust immune system is the first step toward preventing the flu. A diet rich in foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein offers immune-rich ingredients which provide the building blocks the body needs for vigorous defenses. Setting a regular bedtime is especially important because lack of sleep can weaken the immune system, making children more susceptible to illnesses like the cold and flu.

  • Vitamin A-rich foods can aid proper immune system function[i]. Some excellent sources of vitamin A include everyday diet. Some food sources rich in vitamin A include orange and red vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, and red peppers, as well as fruits like cantaloupe, apricots, and mangoes. Certain types of fish and dairy products also contain vitamin A.
  • Vitamin C is well-known as an immune system booster[ii]. Citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits, along with strawberries, kiwi, tomatoes, and various vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and kale, are abundant sources of this vital nutrient
  • Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that supports a strong immune system[iii]. Nuts like almonds, hazelnuts, and peanuts, along with their butter and oils, as well as sunflower seeds, wheat germ, and fortified foods like breakfast cereals and fruit juices, are excellent sources of vitamin E

If you find it challenging to get enough fruits and vegetables in your child’s meals to ensure they meet their nutrition requirements, try adding PediaSure to their glass of milk as it will not only elevate the taste but also increase the nutritional value of that glass of milk. It is a complete and balanced nutrition solution with 37 nutrients, scientifically tested to help improve children’s immunity.

  • 2. Encourage movement:

Physical activity offers numerous benefits for children, including improved immune health[iv], better sleep[v], and enhanced learning[vi]. Engage your child in online exercise classes or arrange playdates with their peers to promote movement and active play.

  • 3. Destress and try new activities:

Stress can weaken the immune system[vii]. Help your child unwind by curling up with a story, listening to a podcast or trying activities together like cooking. Engaging in culinary activities with your children not only strengthens your bond but also enhances their nutritional intake. Encourage your little ones to create their own snacks to support their immune system, such as combining vitamin C-rich strawberries with yoghurt or spreading vitamin E-packed peanut butter on crackers. For older children, you can involve them in preparing high-protein scrambled eggs or French toast for a family breakfast or ask for their assistance in making a salad or their favourite vegetable side dish during dinner time.

With the arrival of the monsoon season, you can take proactive steps to support your child’s immune health. By prioritizing a nutrient-rich diet, encouraging regular exercise, and reducing stress through enjoyable activities, you can help strengthen their immunity and protect them during this time of increased vulnerability. Embrace these tips and create a healthy environment that bolsters their overall well-being and resilience against flu and other common illnesses.
