Why the Finnish education k-12 system is globally admired

By Ms. Indira Ramachandran, Principal At TAS, Pune

The Finnish education system has been hailed as one of the best in the world, consistently ranking at the top of international education rankings. This has piqued the interest of many educators and policymakers around the globe, including those in India. The Finnish education system has consistently ranked high in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests, which evaluate educational systems around the world. The system is known for its emphasis on equity, high-quality teachers, and a student centered approach to learning. The Finnish education system believes in providing equal opportunities to all its students, regardless of their economic or social background. This system has led to a high level of educational attainment among the Finnish population, and many countries around the world are now looking to emulate it. The Finnish model is based on trust, responsibility, and autonomy, and it has been praised for its innovative practices that allow students to learn at their own pace. It is a fascinating model that deserves to be studied and analysed, particularly in India, where there is a need for innovative approaches to education.

Education in India is primarily provided by government-funded public schools and private schools, with a small number of Indian and international schools offering an alternative to the traditional system. The curriculum of the Indian education system is standardized across the country, with each state having its own education board that sets the syllabus and conducts the exams. The system has also been focused on rote learning and not promoting creativity and critical thinking among students.

While there are some differences between the two education systems, both systems prioritise education as a means to social mobility and economic success, and both recognize the importance of investing in education as a way to build a strong future for the country.

The Finnish curriculum is designed to be flexible and allows teachers to adapt their teaching methods to suit the needs of their students. It is important to carefully examine the Finnish education system to ensure that any adaptations made are appropriate for the Indian context.

Can the Finnish Education System be adapted to Indian Conditions?

The key principles that underpin the Finnish education system include a focus on equal opportunities for all students, a student-centric approach, highly qualified teachers, and a curriculum that emphasises creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

While some of these principles may be challenging to implement in the Indian education system, there are certainly aspects that could be adopted. For example, a greater emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving could help Indian students to develop the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing global economy.

Another key area where the Finnish system could be adapted is in teacher training. Finnish teachers are highly qualified and undergo rigorous training, which is reflected in their ability to deliver high-quality education to students. By investing in teacher training and development, Indian schools could improve the quality of education on offer, and ensure that students are better equipped to succeed in the future.

The Finnish education system has been widely regarded as one of the most successful in the world. Their emphasis on play-based learning is something that can be adopted by Indian schools. The current Indian education system is often focused on rote learning and memorisation, which can be stressful for students. The Finnish system, on the other hand, prioritises creativity and practical thinking skills, which can help students develop a lifelong love of learning.

Several Indian schools have implemented the Finnish-style education system and have seen positive results. They have completely transformed their approach to education by focusing on the holistic development of the child. They have also implemented a flexible timetable that allows students to work at their own pace and take breaks when needed. They have put an emphasis on project-based learning, where students work on projects that align with their interests and passions. They have also created a culture of collaboration and inclusivity, where students are encouraged to work together and learn from one another.

Finnish-style education system can be adapted to Indian conditions and can be successful in improving the quality of education. However, it is important to note that it is not a simple process and requires a significant investment of time and resources, but the results can be transformative for both students and educators. Changing the education system is a long-term process that requires commitment and patience. It would take time for the new system to be implemented and for students, teachers, and parents to adapt to the changes. Any attempt to adapt the Finnish model would need to take into account the unique cultural, social, and economic factors that shape education in India. By adapting some of the key principles of the Finnish system, India can work towards creating a more equitable, inclusive, and student-centric education system.

Satya Paul’s Emporio Home

Satya Paul

Satya Paul has been pushing boundaries since it was established in 1985. The first to re-define the traditional sari and innovate print without bounds, it has always been forward-looking, optimistic and progressive — mirroring the outlook of the people most naturally drawn to it.

The new Satya Paul store at DLF Emporio is no exception to this rule of innovation. Designed to resemble a literal egg, it plays with this elemental symbol, cocooning its visitors. The store has no sharp edges – it is smooth, soft and seamless. According to Satya Paul’s Creative Director, Rajesh Pratap Singh, the intention of space is “to be both experimental and nurturing.” Through the store, visitors encounter fragmented circles that encourage them to keep going. The final, complete circle is only encountered at the end, raising the philosophical question of whether the end is the beginning, or the beginning is the end?

The egg is also monolithic and meditative – the latter quality was often used to describe the founder of the brand, Mr. Satya Paul himself. But inside, color bursts to create life; print is DNA. The dominant materials used in the space also embody the brand ethos, which is to take something local and familiar and look at it through a global, unexpected lens. The use of terazzo is one way in which this philosophy comes through. The store also welcomes visitors with a unique, one-of-a-kind pink which more than a hue, is a feeling. Soft but bright, and a made from a local materials that has a quality of cosmpolitanism embedded in it, it is a shade that represents the brand perfectly.

Currrently, the stores house two of the brand’s latest edits. Delhi-Kyoto Non Stop and Acid Flowers. The first seamlessly blends the rich cultural tapestries of India and Japan. Drawing inspiration from the art of Japanese woodblocks, the traditional patchwork style of Boro, serene Japanese gardens, yakuza tattoos, and the unforgettable Sakura season, this dreamy edit features playful saris, co-ord sets, shirts, and dresses.

The Acid Flowers edit invites you to embark on a wild dance with the eternal beauty of nature. Inspired by the flora and fauna that surrounds us, this collection is designed for events that demand a touch of glam. Exotic flowers, vibrant colours, and a sprinkling of crystals define each creation, offering a perfect blend of sophistication and spontaneity. Crafted in super comfortable fabrics, these pieces effortlessly transition from day to night.

Satya Paul is at home in this address, and most comfortable in a space that encourages its visitors to be autonmous and free: much like the feeling the brand’s clothing is known to impart on its wearers.

Huawei joins Green Digital Action at COP28

[Dubai, United Arab Emirates,15th December 2023] Huawei has joined hands with more than 40 leading tech companies and organizations to push for Green Digital Action (GDA) at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Climate Change agreement (COP28), hosted by the UAE, that closed on Tuesday.

Huawei is a founding member of the initiative and, together with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), co-leads the action plan and launch of a peer-learning working group to strengthen industry and international collaboration on environmental sustainability standards.

The plan seeks to “create a roadmap that will guide future work and call on experts to contribute post-COP28… and call to experts to share best practices that are not yet standardized,” the document states.

The working group will meet throughout 2024, until COP29, to accelerate the implementation of identified standards, share best practices, and address existing gaps.

Huawei pilots the GDA pillar on green standards, which represents an effort to bring sustainability to the forefront of digital practices.

In an outcome document published toward the end of COP28, the ITU said: “Driven by collaboration and consensus decisions, international standardization is a key avenue to make meaningful progress toward the future we want.”

Key outcomes also include a joint statement by ITU, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) on the importance of sustainability being built into technical standards development.

“The digital technology sector is giving us reason for hope with their clear commitments on climate action,” said Tomas Lamanauskas, ITU Deputy Secretary-General and convener of GDA. He added that the ITU “will work with our tech partners to ensure follow-through on these commitments with the aim of expanding and strengthening them in the future.”

GDA took place Dec 2-9 at COP28. Huawei was involved in five separate GDA events that accelerate action and showcased tech industry commitments.

The nearly year-long effort behind GDA involved over 40 partners, ranging from industry associations, UN agencies, to governments and the private sector.
