Asia Protein Buyers 100 Reveals Opportunities for Indian Food Companies to Lead in Sustainable Protein Sourcing

24th June 2024 Mumbai, Maharashtra, India Amidst soaring temperatures, a rising population, fluctuating crop yields, and changing dietary patterns, India’s nutritional security faces complex challenges. Food companies are under increased scrutiny from consumers, and investors, and rising regulations on supply chain disclosures for sustainability. What is the current state of India’s listed food companies regarding their protein sourcing and supply chains? How do they compare with other major Asian companies, and what are the key sustainability issues and interdependence in India? The latest Asia Protein Buyers 100 report by Asia Research & Engagement (ARE) reveals that there is some progress since the 2022 baseline report, but still a significant distance to cover in the journey towards responsible and sustainable sourcing across the region. This is especially urgent in India, presenting an opportunity for leadership and greater nutritional security.

Cover Image of Asia Protein Buyers 100 Report

The assessment by ARE evaluated 100 regional protein buyers on 40 indicators across 10 sustainability themes, per the Asia Protein Transition Platform investor expected disclosures. The companies include listed manufacturers, restaurants, retailers, and hotels across more than 10 markets, with a combined market capitalisation exceeding USD 563 billion. Designed as a benchmark for investors, banks, and companies striving for responsible and sustainable sourcing, ARE plans to conduct the assessment every two years. The findings highlight a pressing urgency for responsible and sustainable sourcing among Asian food companies, focusing on the supply chains of animal protein as the most resource-intensive and impacting aspect of our food system. This issue is especially critical for India, where food systems account for 14% of the country’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Enteric fermentation in livestock is the leading cause, contributing to more than half of these emissions.

“Asia’s protein buyers still need to confront the deeply problematic social and environmental impacts and dependencies along their supply chains,” said Kate Blaszak, Director of Protein Transition and Co-author of the report, “The Asia Protein Buyers 100: An Assessment of Responsible and Sustainable Sourcing.” “These direct and indirect impacts pose direct risks to the companies, their investors, lenders, and customers. Forward-thinking protein buyers are tackling these risks as a market opportunity, gaining a competitive and financing edge, and working gradually to rebalance our food system with new plant-based and other smart protein offerings.”

The average overall score for the 100 companies was just 9%, with no company scoring above 50%. The average score across 12 major listed Indian companies was only 7%. “Such low scores might seem disheartening,” said Rituj Sahu, India Director for Protein Transition, ARE. “But there’s increasing awareness of the impacts and inefficiencies of our food system, a strong push from the regulatory authority SEBI, and an opportunity for Indian companies to demonstrate leadership and set integrated sustainability strategies, targets and policies by 2025.”

ARE identified the ten highest scoring companies—listed in Thailand, China, and Japan—as “Evolving Strategically”, for making it into tier three of six possible tiers. Companies scored best in the assessment of public disclosure related to protein supply chains on Water & Waste (20%), and poorest on Governance (2%). Results of key themes of priority to Platform investors include:

Labour & Just Transition: average score of 13%. While 23 companies have supplier codes of conduct, only two demonstrate due diligence in labour practices along their supply chains.

Responsible Antibiotic Use: average score of 3%. Only one company has a policy to avoid routine preventive antibiotic use, reflecting a low recognition of the risks associated with this major use of antibiotics and resistance.

Animal Welfare: average score of 7%, with only one company aligning its policy with Farm Animal Responsible Minimum Standards (FARMS) and three setting cage-free commitments.

Climate Change: average score of 12%, with emerging inclusion of indirect emissions but reluctance among most companies to tackle indirect emissions in their supply chains and set science-based reduction targets.

Deforestation & Biodiversity: average score of 5%. 26 companies acknowledge the risk of deforestation in their supply chains, but only two have set zero-deforestation deadlines.

Protein Diversification: average score of 5%. While 33 companies offer plant-based proteins, only two have set targets to increase sales, or to help capture the potential flexitarian consumer segment.

The report highlights significant economic and trade implications for India, particularly the risks to its USD5 billion annual shrimp export business from antibiotics overuse or labour concerns. Against this backdrop, the growing importance of sustainability in decision-making, driven by customers, suppliers, governments, and investors, alongside SEBI’s stance on ESG reporting, offers Indian companies an opportunity to lead in ESG disclosures and nutritional sustainability regionally. The report urges Asia’s protein buyers to enhance their efforts through integrated sustainability strategies, emphasising indirect risks and prioritising interdependencies. This approach will protect and create value for themselves, investors, and lenders while also securing nutritional security and sustainability.

Interdependencies include the linkages between GHG emission reduction and protein diversification for long-term mitigation. They also encompass the connections between improved farm animal welfare, enhanced food quality, reduced antibiotic use, better public health, and, in some cases, reduced emissions, feed requirements, and production costs in the short term.

Actionable recommendations include:

  • Protein buyers to develop and publish policies, targets, and commitments by 2025 that:
  • strengthen governance around protein sustainability, as part of an integrated business strategy,
  • strengthen traceability, transparency, and labour due diligence,
  • protect health and safety via clear principles on responsible antibiotic use,
  • improve animal welfare towards FARMS, starting with policies and cage-free commitments for eggs and no permanent tethering of dairy cows;
  • commit to zero-deforestation, to protect biodiversity and help reduce emissions,
  • source seafood sustainably, growing the use of independent verification, and
  • diversify further with alternative proteins, setting a sales target to help drive uptake and scale.
  • Companies can refer to the Platform to support their sustainability journey and reach out to ARE with the confidence of investor-backed engagement.
  • Buyers, suppliers, investors, and financiers should collaborate, accelerating the implementation of a responsible and sustainable protein transition in Asia by 2030.

This analysis examines trends from March to May and offers predictions for market conditions from June to August. The Price Analysis Index provides crucial insights into price tendencies, helping stakeholders make informed decisions for the upcoming months.

Key highlights from the Price Analysis Index:

Price Analysis Index for fruits

The pricing dynamics within the fruits and vegetables sectors have revealed a noticeable correlation in recent months. Take, for example, the trajectory of Mango (Dasheri, Carbide-Free), where prices plummeted from Rs. 194/kg in April to Rs. 102/kg in May, projected to dip further to Rs. 86/kg in June before peaking at Rs. 100/kg in July. Similarly, Watermelon prices saw a decline from Rs. 44/kg in March, further dropping to Rs. 28/kg in April and Rs. 24/kg in May. Based on this trend, forecasts suggest an increase to Rs. 31/kg in June and further to Rs. 44–Rs. 48/kg in July and August.

The price of pomegranates has been on a rollercoaster, initially rising to Rs. 169/kg in March, then dropping to Rs. 175/kg, only to surge again to Rs. 211/kg in May. Forecasts suggest a further increase to Rs. 236/kg in July, followed by a drop to Rs. 172/kg in August. This trend reflects wider market volatility, mirrored by fruits like Papaya, which experienced slight fluctuations from Rs. 58/kg in May, projected to rise to Rs. 68/kg in June before sharply ascending to Rs. 73/kg in July, then dropping to Rs. 53/kg in August. Large Bananas maintained a steady trend around April but saw a slight decrease to Rs. 65/kg in May, expected to drop further to Rs. 58/kg in June before gradually climbing to Rs. 69/kg in July and Rs. 74/kg in August. This pattern highlights the growing demand for staple fruits regardless of the season.

The prices of Tender Coconuts saw a gradual increase to Rs. 62/kg in May, stabilizing at Rs. 65/kg from June to August, aligning with other essential fruits. Small Apples witnessed a notable price escalation from Rs. 200/kg in March and April, with projections indicating a further increase to Rs. 239/kg by August, making them increasingly preferable among consumers. Conversely, Imported Small Green Kiwis plummeted to Rs. 81/kg in May, and remained fluctuating around Rs. 85-Rs. 90/kg during the summer months, highlighting the impact of imports on the domestic market.

In the vegetable segment, onions fluctuated to around Rs. 40/kg in March and Rs. 33/kg in May. Expectations indicate stability within the Rs. 35-40/kg range from June to August, mirroring the supply and demand dynamics observed in the fruit markets.

Hybrid tomatoes exhibited significant price fluctuations, starting at Rs. 45/kg in May and dropping to Rs. 31/kg. Projections suggest a rise to Rs. 41/kg by June, with an anticipated peak of Rs. 90/kg in August. French beans followed a similar pattern, with prices at Rs. 92/kg in March, Rs. 111/kg in April, and Rs. 89/kg in May, dropping to Rs. 69/kg in June, before rising to Rs. 97/kg in July and peaking at Rs. 115/kg in August. Ginger, known for its frequent price fluctuations, is expected to reach a peak of Rs. 247/kg in August.

The price trends for lemons exhibited a gradual increase, rising to Rs. 217/kg in May, peaking at Rs. 284/kg in July, before gradually declining to Rs. 182/kg in August. Similarly, okra prices followed a similar pattern, dropping to Rs. 78/kg in May, and reaching a low of Rs. 50/kg in June and August. Premium red and orange carrots experienced consistent market demand, with prices increasing from Rs. 43/kg to Rs. 45/kg between April and May, and slightly rising to Rs. 55/kg in August.

Button mushrooms saw a steady escalation in prices, climbing to Rs. 222/kg in May, and further increasing to Rs. 275/kg in August. Conversely, seedless cucumbers experienced price variations, dropping to Rs. 41/kg in May and approximating Rs. 55/kg in August.

In the vegetable market, the long bottle gourd (lauki) rose to Rs. 44/kg by May and is expected to further increase to Rs. 57/kg in August. Similarly, green capsicum declined to Rs. 66/kg in May but is forecasted to rebound to Rs. 88/kg in August. Meanwhile, potatoes exhibited moderate price stability, rising to Rs. 31/kg in May, with prices expected to remain around Rs. 35-36/kg in the coming months, reflecting consistent demand for this staple vegetable throughout the year.

According to Varun Khurana, CEO of Otipy, “We remain committed to empowering both farmers and consumers with valuable insights into the fluctuating dynamics of the agricultural market. Our comprehensive analysis sheds light on the intricate price movements of fruits and vegetables, providing stakeholders with the knowledge needed to navigate through market volatility effectively. Through this endeavor, Otipy reaffirms its dedication to fostering a fair and sustainable agricultural ecosystem in India, ensuring equitable opportunities for all involved.”

This corroborates the fact that changes in demand and supply are pivotal to the fruits and vegetables market characterized by consistent price changes in line with the market and seasonal changes. While often the price of certain fruits such as mango, and watermelons has seen the normal trend of having lower prices during times of high supply of the produce, other commodities like onions, tomatoes and ginger have seen their prices change sharply due to unpredictable fluctuations in supply and demand. Nevertheless, certain items such as bananas, tender coconuts and potatoes show the least fluctuation in demand and have some reasonable price variations. It also accentuates the need to have a broader perspective of various price fluctuations in the sector while noting the tricky issue of consumers’ demand and seasonal supply.

TERI-UNOPS Initiative Empowered 27000 School Children in Uttar Pradesh on Climate Change, Health, and Hygiene Practices

School Children in Uttar Prades

24th June 2024 New Delhi, Delhi, India A TERI-UNOPS (The Energy and Resources Institute – United Nations Office for Project Services) collaborative initiative on “Capacity Building Programme Targeting School Children on Climate Change, Health, and Hygiene across 11 Districts of Uttar Pradesh, India”, concluded with a National Conference held in New Delhi on Thursday. The national workshop involving various stakeholders from ministries, UN agencies, and partners was held to share lessons from the field, exchange best practices from the project, and discuss scaling-up efforts. The project, is conceptualized around the combination of three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 3 (ensure healthy lives across all ages), SDG 6 (ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) and SDG 13 (limiting and adapting to climate change), aims to improve public health and raise community awareness. It incorporates climate change adaptations into the curriculum for school children in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh, where unique challenges related to water, sanitation, health, and climate change are prevalent. The project especially focuses on teenage girls, providing them with the tools to effectively manage and preserve water sources.

Launch of TERI-UNOPS Project Manual

Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI, welcomed the guests, dignitaries and particularly congratulated the students emphasizing their role as ambassadors of climate change. “You all are the torch bearers of the initiative and shoulder the responsibility of taking forward this message to the community to tackle the changing climate and make the environment clean. This will go a long way in achieving our sustainability initiatives,” he said.

Elaborating on the on-ground initiatives, Mr Vinod Mishra, Country Manager, UNOPS India, expressed the organization’s delight in collaborating with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to organize vital workshops for 27000 children across 162 schools. “Students can be the champions, if trained, can be the Ambassadors”, expressed Mr Mishra giving a rationale of the very project which has been conceptualized on the basis of three SDGs. Taking the audience through the objectives of the project, he further added, “By focusing on critical areas such as access to clean water, the impact of climate change, and comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities, we are directly addressing Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6 and 13. This initiative not only aims to enhance public health but also empowers communities by incorporating climate change adaptations into the educational curriculum.”

Highlighting the project’s achievements, Dr Neha, Senior Fellow, TERI, stated that the initiative raises awareness of climate change, water conservation, and menstrual health among school children. It also promotes sustainable water-saving practices in schools and aims to influence water management and conservation at family and community levels. This was followed by the student climate champions sharing their experiences and the screening of a project video.

Mr. Bharat Lal, Secretary General, National Human Rights Commission, Mr Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Freddy Svane, Ambassador at the Royal Danish Embassy in India, and H.E. Dr Muawia Elbukhari, Ambassador of Sudan in India, delved further into the achievements of the project in their special addresses. Highlighting the importance of the Jal Jeevan Mission and the factors necessary to contribute towards its success, Mr Bharat Lal, said, “There is a need for UN agencies and organizations like TERI who have an important role to play in the success of such projects through the children and youth. Achieving the mission of Vikshit Bharat will not be possible without children. A clean and green India can happen only by training and educating the children,” he emphasized.
