Language Technologies Centre at IIIT Hyderabad Celebrates 25 Years

9 December 2024: International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad’s (IIITH) Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) celebrated the 25th year of its inception with a two-day event over the weekend that included several talks and panel discussions on the vision, mission, evolution and future of language technologies. The event highlighted the importance of academic research connected with real-life problems, the need for collaboration in technology development, and the role of language technology across regional languages for social good.

To mark the occasion LTRC launched free to download BhashaVerse language resources machine translation models. The multitask encoder-decoder model can translate from any of the 36 languages into any other including Tulu, Bodo, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Santhali etc. It helps with machine translation evaluation, error identification and automatic post editing of 10 billion sentence pairs.

The Centre also announced the development of BhashaVerse LLM decoder model for 36 Indian languages that can be used for summarisations, Q&A etc with some fine tuning. In addition to these models, LTRC released synthetically generated and curated 10 billion Bhashik datasets for Indian language to Indian language pairs; a generic dataset, one in the Education domain that works across 17 different fields in English and 5 Indian languages and one for the Health domain in English and 8 Indian languages. For the first time in Indian languages, a dataset for automatic post editing of text and machine translation evaluation has also been made available.

Established in October 1999 in response to the preeminent scientific challenge of enabling machines to read, understand and derive meaning from human languages especially in the Indian context and Indian languages, it was, perhaps, the first such research theme focused centre in the country. Today LTRC is the largest academic centre of speech and language technology in South Asia.

Initially focused on areas like Machine Translation, Semantic Parsing, and Information Extraction, the centre has expanded its research portfolio to include Speech Recognition, Text Generation, Sentiment Analysis, Dialogue Systems, and more. Over the years, LTRC has built a thriving ecosystem of researchers, students, and collaborators who have carried forward the centre’s pioneering work in various directions, many of which had their origins at LTRC itself.

The goodwill that the Centre has garnered over the years was self-evident by the active participation of several notable figures in the field of language technologies from academia and industry, as well as faculty, students, alumni and collaborators at the event.

Commenting on LTRC and its impact, Prof Vasudeva Varma, Head, LTRC said, “As the first natural language processing centre in the country we have pioneered several aspects of research and education. We have trained brilliant minds who are leading advances worldwide. Our lasting contribution in research, open datasets, tools and technologies have made huge impact. Our successful technology transfers have brought industry and academic closer. We look forward to continuing to push the boundaries and our legacy of innovation”.

Hidden Dangers of Thyroid Cancer in Young Women

Dr Santosh Chikareddi

By Dr. Santosh Chikkaraddy, Sr.Surgical Oncologist, HCG NMR Cancer Center, Hubli

Although rare, thyroid cancer is growing fast and has become common in young women. In the last few years, according to the statistics, it was seen that it is the most common cancer in the population of women aged 20-39 years. While the thyroid cancers are rising in the numbers, this remains an obscure entity which often disguises as a benign lump in the neck. It is crucial to make the young woman aware of the risks, symptoms, and treatment options that are available for thyroid cancer.

Risk Factors and Symptoms
Thyroid cancer often occurs in women aged between 20 and 39 years. Even though the causes of thyroid cancer remain unknown, some risk factors have been identified. Some of these include: family history of thyroid cancer, exposure to radiation especially during childhood, some genetic syndromes such as multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN), and gender: women are more frequently diagnosed than men and three times as likely to develop thyroid cancer than men.

Symptoms of Thyroid Cancer
The symptoms of thyroid cancer can be low-key; they include a mass or nodule in the neck, swelling in the neck, pain in the neck or throat, hoarseness or changes in the voice, difficulty swallowing or breathing, coughing, and a persistent sore throat. In some instances, thyroid cancer may have no noticeable symptoms at all till it has spread to the other parts of the body.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis of thyroid cancer is usually a blend of physical examination and imaging tests, along with FNAC. The treatment usually includes surgery or radioactive iodine therapy or a combination of both.

Surgical Treatment: Surgical removal of the thyroid gland, referred to as thyroidectomy, is considered the first and foremost step in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy: This therapy entails the oral consumption of radioactive iodine, which kills cancerous cells in the body.

Prevention and Detection
Although there are no known methods to ensure thyroid cancer, the risks can be minimized by employing the following: regular check-ups, healthy lifestyle, and avoidance of radiation.

Healthy Lifestyle
Having a healthy lifestyle can help reduce the risks of thyroid cancer. A healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, regular exercise, stress management, and proper sleep can help prevent thyroid cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption also helps reduce the risk.

Avoiding Radiation Exposure
Limiting exposure to radiation, especially during childhood and adolescence, can also reduce the risk of getting thyroid cancer. This includes avoiding unnecessary medical imaging tests, such as CT scans, and avoiding exposure to radiation from sources such as nuclear power plants.

Thyroid cancer is a significant health concern for young women in India. While awareness of the risks and symptoms of this condition is essential, the importance of early detection and treatment cannot be overlooked. Being more proactive about our health, making efforts to lower our risk, and seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms occur can help prevent and cure thyroid cancer effectively. Together, we can help reduce the burden of thyroid cancer in India and ensure our citizens lead healthier lives.

India Eyes Record Finish After Beating Singapore in Handball

IND Vs SIN_India's

December 9, 2024: India overcame Singapore with a commanding 35-22 win on Sunday at the Asian Women’s Handball Championship (AWHC) 2024 in New Delhi, opening up the opportunity for their best-ever finish at the tournament. India, who have never finished above sixth in the competition, will face China on December 10 in the 5th/6th place playoff match.

Charged by the backing of their fans, India opened the placement match against Singapore with high energy, leading 9-6 midway through the first half, thanks to Menika and Bhawana Sharma’s consistent scoring. At the other end, captain Diksha Kumari and goalkeeper Nina Shil–who also saved a penalty and was adjudged Player of the Match–made key saves to keep Singapore at bay. The hosts maintained their overall dominance on the other side of the interval, securing a comprehensive win.

Presented by the World Handball League (WHL) and organised by the Asian Handball Federation, the AWHC has already witnessed this relatively young Indian contingent playing fearlessly against Asia’s best teams, showcasing resilience and grit. In the group stage, India beat Hong Kong-CHN 31-28 in their opening match, lost by two points to the previous edition’s semi-finalists Iran, and recorded the most goals in the group against Japan.

Speaking on her team’s display in the tournament so far, captain Diksha Kumari said: “Our team has shown incredible spirit and resilience throughout this tournament, whether against Hong Kong, Singapore, Iran, and even Japan. Every match has been a learning experience for us and we have pushed ourselves to compete with some of the best teams in Asia at our home. Scoring consistently and staying strong defensively has been our focus, and we’re proud of how we’ve come together as a unit. This journey inspires us to aim higher.”

While the Indian team’s performance at the Championships has shown many positives, it also highlighted the possibilities that can accelerate the national team’s journey and progress, ensuring a pivotal shift from just being underdogs to establishing itself as a strong opponent to reckon with in Asia.

Earlier in the day, China ensured their place opposite India in the 5th/6th place playoff by beating Hong Kong-CHN with a resounding 38-14 scoreline. In the top bracket, meanwhile, South Korea booked their berth in the final–scheduled to be played on December 10, Tuesday–by outclassing Iran 33-20.
