NTT Unveils AI Cloud for Industry Use at R&D Forum 2024

Dec. 5, 2024NTT Corporation (NTT) hosted their annual R&D Forum Nov. 25-29 in Tokyo, Japan to showcase the company’s global commitment to developing innovative new solutions that create a more sustainable society for all. During a special keynote, NTT President and CEO Akira Shimada discussed the role the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) will play in enabling NTT’s Industry AI Cloud, a shared platform designed to digitize and structure industry-specific expertise enabling industries to expand their scope of problem-solving. For example, NTT and Toyota Motor Corporation recently announced a joint initiative to realize a society with no traffic accidents utilizing the Industry AI Cloud “Mobility AI Platform.

Other industry-specific AI-driven applications include the provision of personalized medical care, drug development, supply chain optimization, agricultural value chain management and more.

“AI has already been widely adopted to streamline general operations, but applying AI to more specialized tasks can significantly enhance added value,” said Shimada. “Furthermore, by accumulating data across companies on a shared platform and leveraging AI, industries can collectively address societal challenges and contribute to their resolution. We call this the Industry AI Cloud, and NTT is actively collaborating across various industries to realize this vision with partners.”

During the 2024 R&D Forum exhibition, NTT demonstrated five world’s-first R&D breakthroughs, including: the first international connection of NTT’s All-Photonics Network (APN); the application of the APN to advance cloud endoscopy capabilities and live remote video production; the development of optical transmission lines with four times the capacity of current optical fibers; and open-ear, noise-canceling Personalized Sound Zone (PSZ)-capable headphones.

“NTT’s dedication to global R&D investment provides a unique competitive advantage as we work not only to improve society through technological innovation today but also pre-emptively solve the problems of the next decade and the next half-century,” said Katsuhiko Kawazoe, senior executive vice president, CTO, CIO and CDO of NTT. “Annual events such as the NTT R&D Forum in Tokyo and NTT Research Upgrade near Silicon Valley offer a first-hand look at the future of technological innovation while fostering vital conversations on how to harness that innovation to create a better future for all.”

Demonstrations of world’s-first R&D breakthroughs included:

1. APN First International Connection: NTT and Chunghwa Telecom showcase virtual reality proof-of-concept connecting Taipei and Tokyo with IOWN
NTT and Chunghwa Telecom demonstrated a proof-of-concept application connecting Taipei and Tokyo with the IOWN APN—the world’s first such international connection. The companies leveraged the connection to unveil an ultra-low-latency interactive immersive video show, allowing users in both Taiwan and Japan to join a virtual space to watch virtual reality (VR) performances and interact with each other. With the high bandwidth and low latency characteristics of IOWN APN technology, cloud-rendered high-quality VR images significantly lighten the load on user-end devices and reduce VR-induced sickness. NTT and Chunghwa Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly advance the evolution and implementation of IOWN technology on Oct. 25, 2023, launching the world’s first international connection with the IOWN APN on Aug. 29, 2024. 2. World’s First Cloud Endoscopy System: Demonstration of IOWN APN’s low-latency capability for real-time diagnosis and treatment on a remote server
NTT and Olympus Corporation announced the joint establishment of a cloud endoscopy system utilizing the IOWN APN, demonstrating that the APN technology can solve associated network issues. An endoscope is a medical device in which a flexible tube is inserted into the natural openings of the body to perform an examination and obtain tissue samples. They are used increasingly more often due to the equipment’s low level of invasiveness and high level of safety. However, current endoscopes handle all its functions within the endoscope device, making performance limitations and maintainability an issue. NTT and Olympus are developing an endoscopy system in which functions with high processing loads, such as image processing, can be done on the cloud. [Read the Full Release]

3. Optical Fiber Innovation: The world’s first automatic rotation alignment connection and branching/connecting technology with existing optical fibers
NTT researchers developed a lineup of on-site construction, maintenance and operation technologies essential for the commercial introduction of four-core multi-core optical fiber (MCF) optical transmission lines, which enable a single communication optical fiber to have four times the capacity of current optical fibers. This achievement is expected to accelerate the practical application of four-core MCF optical transmission lines in inter-data center optical communications, where the demand for optical fiber cores continues to grow exponentially, and in submarine optical transmission sections, where optical fiber mounting space in optical cables is limited. 4. The Future of Personalized Sound Zones: The world’s first broadband noise-canceling technology for open-ear headphones that reduces ambient noise without covering users’ ears
NTT has developed Active Noise Control (ANC) technology for open-ear headphones that do not cover the ears, reducing ambient noise near the ears. NTT’s Personalized Sound Zone (PSZ) technology is the ultimate private sound space in which desired sounds can be heard only by oneself without leaking to others, and undesired sounds can be reduced. Conventional open-ear headphones with noise-canceling features can only reduce sound below 1,000 Hz. However, NTT’s new ANC technology can reduce noise above 1,000 Hz in PSZ open-ear headphones. Looking ahead, NTT will continue to commercialize open-ear headphones incorporating this technology, including through NTT sonority, Inc., while also studying applications in real environments such as crowded streets and mobility. In addition, NTT aims to integrate this technology with the Acoustic XR Technology, which combines virtual sound heard through headphones with real sound heard directly by the ear, creating new audio experiences such as immersive entertainment and audio guides. 5. Live Video Production Digital Transformation: Japan’s first fully remote live production environment using IOWN APN
NTT and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, Inc. (TBS) successfully created a remote video production environment that connects production sites and filming sites via the IOWN APN, a step towards eliminating the need to dispatch outside broadcasting vehicles and production staff to filming sites; for example, to broadcast live events at stadiums and arenas. The high-capacity, low-latency, fluctuation-free APN enables large-capacity video transmission for multiple cameras, real-time remote camera control and Precision Time Protocol (PTP) time synchronization between video equipment at remote locations. This demonstration overcomes key challenges with conventional video production technology, including: the impossibility of simultaneously transmitting multiple camera images in a large capacity from a filming location to a remote production base; large delays in camera control signals and headset audio information disrupting communication between a crew and remote producer; and the difficulty of maintaining a stable communication environment.

The theme of this year’s forum was IOWN INTEGRAL, which has two meanings—”integration” and “indispensable“— to reflect NTT’s dedication implementing IOWN across a wide range of applications, including advanced telecommunications infrastructure and artificial intelligence. Annually, NTT invests $3.6 billion in its global scientific research and technology R&D initiatives.

Maitri Bhanushali on Brinda Dahal: ‘We Often Choreograph Ourselves

 Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya

In the world of television, on-screen rivalries often capture the audience’s attention, but behind the scenes, they can lead to some of the most heartwarming friendships. This is exactly what’s happening on the sets of Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya on Sun Neo, where Maitri Bhanushali, who plays Tina, and Brinda Dahal, who portrays Vaishnavi, have forged a deep connection that goes beyond the camera.

Speaking about their incredible bond, Maitri shares, “Brinda and I are like soul sisters, and we have so much in common. Whenever I go to Brinda’s room, the music automatically starts playing, and as soon as it does, I look at her, she looks at me, and we just start vibing together. Whenever we get even a little free time, we make reels. We’ve made so many dance reels together! Even in Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, when our characters compete for Kartik in a positive-negative way, dance somehow gets added to the mix.”

She further added, “We often end up doing dance sequences together, and even the Sun Neo channel knows how much we enjoy dancing—they sometimes tell us to perform just because of it! There are times when we choreograph our own dance sequences, and we complete the choreography in just 5 minutes. The choreographers who come on set say that it usually takes an entire day to finish a dance sequence, but the two of us wrap up the entire shoot in just 3 hours. We’re like two little firecrackers when it comes to dancing!”

Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya follows the journey of Vaishnavi, an orphan who finds solace and strength in her unwavering faith in Chhathi Maiyya (portrayed by Sneha Wagh), who serves as a mother figure in her life. The show features a talented cast, including Sara Khan, Jaya Bhattacharya, Brinda Dahal, and Ashish Dixit.

Tune in to Sun Neo to watch Chhathi Maiyya Ki Bitiya, airing every Monday to Saturday at 7 PM.

Grip Invest Unveils ‘Unspoken’ for Honest Money Talks

Ved Agarwal CMO,

December 5, 2024 | Grip Invest announces the launch of ‘unspoken’ – an engaging video series designed to break the generational awkwardness surrounding money-related conversations in families. Featuring five pairs of millennials and their parents, the series captures raw, unscripted discussions on this often ‘taboo’ topic, blending light-hearted moments with wholesome authenticity.

With heartfelt storytelling, Unspoken redefines marketing by igniting essential conversations about money across generations. While money is a central topic in middle-class households, sensitive conversations around it are often avoided. Parents shield their children from financial realities by downplaying struggles, hiding debts, or making sacrifices quietly to ensure their children’s dreams are fulfilled. Meanwhile, children hesitate to ask questions, fearing they might seem ungrateful or intrusive. Over time, this silence deepens into a gap, straining trust, understanding, and relationships within families.

“At its heart, ‘unspoken’ is about breaking barriers,” says Ved Agarwal, Chief Marketing Officer at Grip Invest. “It is an endeavour to recalibrate financial transparency between generations, and in doing so, build trust. We wanted to create a series that doesn’t just resonate with people but motivates them to reflect, act, and strengthen their relationships by starting those difficult conversations about money.”

‘unspoken’ is more than just a series of unscripted conversations; it’s a bridge between the old-world values of financial security and the modern-day ethos of independence and risk-taking. For many millennials, financial independence comes with tension—balancing their desire for autonomy with their parents’ traditional mindset. Grip Invest’s ‘unspoken’ peels back these layers, offering an intimate glimpse into the struggles and aspirations that define financial relationships within families.

‘unspoken’ goes beyond traditional campaigns, evolving into a cultural movement that invites families to initiate meaningful conversations about money and build trust & transparency.

Is it a Disc Protrusion? Signs and Diagnosis Explained

By Dr.Harshavardhan BR, Consulting Orthopedician, Ramakrishna Hospital Jayanagar, Bengaluru)

Disc protrusion, often called a slipped or herniated disc, is a common disorder that affects up to 70% of people in the 30- to 60-year-old age range. Usually, an injury, severe strain, or aging-related spontaneous degeneration of the discs are the causes. It is one of the main causes of leg, back, and neck pain, this ailment is more common in men than in women.

An intervertebral disc protrudes when a tear in its more resilient outer layer allows the disc’s soft, gel-like center to press through. Nerve compression may result from this, which could cause limb weakness, tingling, numbness, and radiating pain. The cervical or thoracic spines in the neck or mid-back can also be affected, while the lumbar spine is the most common location.

The discs that lie between vertebrae serve as cushions, enabling motion and flexibility. But when these discs rupture or leak, the outcome is a herniated disc. In India, the condition is frequently associated with bad posture, extended sitting, heavy weight lifting, and an unhealthy lifestyle. Disc protrusions and hernias both result in pressure-induced structural failures, although they impact the body in distinct ways. Whereas hernias usually happen in the abdomen or groin, disc protrusions affect the spine. Though the pain and symptoms may be similar, many illnesses are different medically.

Diagnosing disc protrusion involves reviewing the patient’s medical history, conducting a physical examination, and using imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to assess the severity.

Conservative measures such as rest, activity reduction, pain management (NSAIDs, muscle relaxants), physical therapy, and hot/cold therapy are useful in treating minor disc protrusion. If these therapies are ineffective, more sophisticated options include spinal fusion, laminectomy, or microdiscectomy, which are surgical procedures intended to relieve pressure on nearby nerves and stabilize the spine, or epidural steroid injections, which provide short-term relief.

Thyrocare Report: Half of Indians Show Abnormal Blood Glucose Levels

Infographic - Slide 4

4th December 2024: Thyrocare, a leading diagnostic and preventive healthcare provider in India, has released a comprehensive research report uncovering critical insights into the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes across India. The study, which analyzed HbA1c test results from a staggering 1,966,449 adults nationwide undergoing a routine health check up in 2023, highlights alarming trends and regional disparities in the incidence of the disease. Key findings indicate that 49.43% of the tested population exhibited abnormal blood glucose levels, with 22.25% identified as prediabetic and 27.18% as diabetics. These statistics emphasize the growing burden of this metabolic disorder, positioning diabetes as a “pandemic in the making” and calling for urgent action.

Key Highlights of the Study
1. High Prevalence Across Regions
Odisha reported the highest prevalence of both prediabetes and diabetes, while Jammu & Kashmir recorded the lowest levels. This underscores the need for implementation of region-specific health programs to tackle the disparity.

2. Dietary Patterns and Diabetes
The study revealed a striking correlation between dietary habits and diabetes prevalence. States with higher rice consumption showed a greater incidence of diabetes and prediabetes, while states with predominantly wheat-based diets demonstrated lower prevalence rates, highlighting the role of diet in managing disease risk.

3. Gender and Age Trends
○ Males had a significantly higher diabetes prevalence (30.84%) compared to females (23.51%).
○ Prediabetes prevalence remained relatively balanced between genders.
○ The data shows highest diabetic burden in 65+ individuals, with worrying trends showing increasing prevalence in the economically active age group of 36-65 years. Young adults between 18-35 years show higher prevalence of prediabetes than diabetes, indicating a high potential to develop the disease.

4. Socioeconomic and Healthcare Challenges
The study warns of a severe strain on India’s healthcare infrastructure and individual finances, advocating for regular screening and awareness campaigns to mitigate the impact of undiagnosed cases.

5. Screening Insights and Policy Implications
By leveraging HbA1c—a stable and reliable marker for long-term glucose monitoring—the research highlights the importance of routine testing. The findings urge policymakers to implement targeted preventive measures in high-burden regions, emphasizing lifestyle modifications and public health education.

Mr. Rahul Guha, MD & CEO of Thyrocare Technologies Ltd. & President of API Holdings, commented: “This study sheds light on the silent but alarming rise of diabetes and prediabetes in India. With nearly half the tested population exhibiting abnormal glucose levels, it is imperative to prioritize regular testing, mass screening, and early detection. These efforts, combined with education and region-specific interventions, are crucial to curbing this epidemic. The role of diet in disease management cannot be understated, and we hope this research sparks meaningful action in public health policy and promotes a more proactive approach to disease prevention and management.”

Dr. Preet Kaur, Vice President – Lab Operations and Quality at Thyrocare Technologies Ltd. and a co-author of the study, stated, “This research provides a critical lens through which we can view the diabetes epidemic in India. The geographical and dietary trends revealed in this study demonstrate the significant impact of lifestyle on disease prevalence. Our goal with this research is to inspire not only greater public awareness but also stronger data-driven healthcare policies that prioritize early detection and preventive strategies.”
