9th June 2023, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi: Today an All India Mayor and RWA Summit was organized here by the Confederation of RWAs(CoRWA) and green society of India on “Waste Management.” The Event was inaugurated by Shri V Murleedharan, Hon’ble Union State Minister for External Affairs & Parliament Affairs, Govt. of India, and Jain Acharya Dr. Lokesh Muni ji, founder of World Peace Centre. The Summit was attended by 16 Mayors and City Commissioners from all over the Country. Hon’ble Nell Bahadur Chettri, Mayor of Municipal Corporations of Gangtok, Hon’ble Hemaliben Boghawal, Mayor of Surat, Hon’ble Mrs Rayana Bhagya Lakshmi, Mayor of Vijaywada highlighted the method of waste collection in their cities agreed with the proposal of making Sanitary Land Fills instead of dumping waste in the open. Mayor of Aizwal Municipal Corporation Hon’ble Lalrinenga Sailo said that Waste is full of value subject to segregation. The dumping grounds should be on faraway lands from the towns & cities. The Government bodies & RWA’s should have mutual connections with other in terms of waste segregation.”Confederation of RWA, UP chief Shri Pawan Kaushik brought out the need of establishing e-waste collection centers.
According to Shri V Murleedharan,‘’We have to focus on three major aspects which is Funds, Functions,Functionaries and give special attention to all the cities. He mentioned about PM Modi launchedLIFE(lifestyle for environment)which is focused on sustainable lifestyle for development for our cities. He also mentionedthe yojana and schemes running by PM Narendra Modi which is Deendayal upadhyaya antyodayayojana, Mudra Yojana, Kisan Samiti and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. According toJain Acharya Dr Lokesh Muni Ji, “We have to spread awareness towards for major aspects cleanliness, population, pollution, corruption and discipline. When we able to change individual mindset it will definitely change the country.”
According to Col TP Tyagi, Chief Convener of CoRWA said that every RWA is a primary school of Democracy and hence every function which can be done by a junior unit should not be performed by a senior unit. The 20 per cent performance grant of the total municipal basic grant should be exclusively be allotted to RWA-driven programmes. Four resolutions were passed by the House. The entire house resolved that Sanitary Land Fills should be made instead of Dumping Grounds which eventually become dumping hills full of fire, disease, pollution and encroachment. He added, “If I throw waste in the open, it is a crime hence dumping waste in open by municipalities is a bigger crime.”
According to Mr Swadesh Kumar, president green society of India, “Sanitary landfills are considered as the most common E-waste disposal technique which aims to reduce or mitigate the potential risks associated with the environment and human health. Such conferences & summits are needed by our society to work together for E-waste management.
